So I'm sure this topic may have been raised before, but I want to gauge some of your input for a sec...

When I'm at work, I listen to sports radio, and for the last couple years it used to ALWAYS be 1270, but I have to admit, and I don't mean to offend our buddy Muhme or anything, I think 1130 has EASILY become the better of the two stations now...

Let me give you my brief critique about 1270/97.1

Jay Towers (6-10 AM)- Ok for one, Jay Towers was the tool who worked at DRQ, he has never hosted a show that is sports related, so the fact that they got rid of Mike & Mike in the Morning to put this dude on, please...

Karsch/Anderson (10-2)- This one used to be my favorite show. Now it's just reading the stupid "busch lite in a can" inbox, talking about the number 69 so Gator can laugh, or raiding somebodys wikipedia page, or talking about how Doug Karsch can't build an ice rink or what Gator watched on MTV last night. Please, so much of this show is regurgitated garbage, I can't even listen to it anymore. And it sucks too because about a year ago around this time, Gator was slowly becoming my favorite radio personality in the D after replacing Art Regner.

Valenti/Foster (2-6 PM)- You know how I feel about Valenti, I'm not going to write a novel explaining that again. Dudes way to stubborn and biased. Terry Foster is okay, but it's obvious he has no control of the show since Mike is pretty much the dictator. Mike gets a cheap thrill out of finding flaws in petty things.

Caputo/Fithian (6-10)- If you've ever heard this show, youd' know this is by far the worst pairing in the detroit sports radio market, these guys have no chemistry, they try and incorporate pop culture into their show and seemingly ALWAYS fail, and Dennis is probably one of the most least insightful people, from a pure sports knowledge standpoint, I've ever heard. It was better when Pat was on his own...

^^^All of these shows used to be great, but somehow, for whatever reasons, within the last five or six months, it's gone totally down the toilet. Perhaps it was the switch to FM which brought over a TON of moron callers who know nothing, or maybe it was the FM station who bought them and changed everything up, either way, I can't listen anymore...

Not to mention all the idiotic first time callers, the fact that they NEVER let the producers Khang or Evan talk anymore (which used to make for hilarious radio), and, probably worst of all, THEY NEVER, AND I MEAN NEVER HAVE ANY GUEST CALLERS, NO INSIDERS, NO BEAT WRITERS, NO LOCAL ATHLETES, NOBODY! What a joke...I used to like hearing A. Sherrod or Steve Phillips each week, now instead, it's just more uninformed callers saying "Fire Flip" or "Fire Leyland"....

And another thing that sucks, and I don't know if this is true or not. Is that it seems like they have a call quota, and that they are obligated to take so many calls per day. So when you call in and somebody makes a point, you never get to here what any of the hosts think about it, because they immediately go to the next caller. I mean c'mon, isn't the whole reason you call to get feedback on your opinions??!?!?

1130 talks sports 100% of the time, and I'm ashamed it took me this long to finally figure that out. Baligian gives you 4 solid hours of sports talk, and even though he can be a bit "boob-ish" sometimes, he's for the most part knowledgable, insightful, and is very polite to callers. Stoney & WoJo (easily the funniest pairing in Detroit sports radio, they have tremendous chemistry) are the same way, and even Jamie isn't that bad in the AM show. I used to hate Jim Rome, but at this point, he's become my savior at work on the radio dial...

Let it be known that on May 29, 2008, 1130 has OFFICIALLY surpassed 1270/97.1

I'll even listen to AM 850 WKNR (ESPN Cleveland) before I listen to 1270 again...from now on 1270 is for Tigs/Wings only, all else is out for good...

Just had to vent. Perhaps I'm making too big of a fuss over a little thing, but as somebody who finds joy out of getting their sports radio fill in to help make the workday go by, I just felt the need to express my thoughts.... Do you all agree?

I go 1130 in the morning (Sean easily has the best show in the biz) and 1270 in the afternoon

In Saginaw it's not always easy to get either without a fair amount of static, but I have always been a fan of 1130. I listen to our new local in the morning (100.9 FM) because it's clear and it's Mike & Mike. I usually go with 1130 in the afternoon and at lunch, because I enjoy Baligian and Stoney & Wojo, plus HUGE is a massive tool. I remember when Baligian took over when BT left and I thought he was in way over his head, but he has developed an outstanding show.
The only time I went with HUGE was when I got sick of hearing about Kwame nonstop on Stoney & Wojo. He's generally the one time they don't talk about sports.

Dude Jethro, there's ESPN radio up in Saginaw?? Do you get like Tirico, Stephen A, Colin Cowherd, etc.?

I don't understand how Detroit doesn't have a 24 hour ESPN radio station...we have to be the biggest sports market remaining without it...

WDFN is by far better than 1270. The only time I ever listen to 1270 is so I can avoid Jim Rome. Sean B is the best there is out there followed closly by stoney and wojo.

Yes, we have ESPN radio. Here's the deal with that. When Citadel or whoever it was decided to buy out another massive broadcast company, FCC regulations apparently forced them to shed some of their holdings. So they put 100.9 in Saginaw up for sale. It had been a rock station but the Great Lakes Loons had a broadcast agreement for their games. The Loons were put on notice and told there was no guarantee the new ownership would broadcast their games, so they might want to start looking for another station to work out a contract with. I believe this happened just a few WEEKS before the season. Management said, what the hell, why don't we buy the station and hook up ESPN programming, since there was no local sports talk station.

So we get Mike & Mike, Tirico, Cowherd - whoever does their 3pm - 6pm show we miss out on because of assclown (Bill HUGE Simonson) - but then in the evening we get Game Night or whatever unless there is a Loons game on.

LMFAO!! Check the rating book son... 97.1 as officially dominated the target demographic... completely destroyed 1130.

...its like comparing the bulls today to the Pistons.. not close. sorry.

I wasn't trying to compare ratings, obviously 97.1 is going to own 1130 in ratings because of the FM status and because they carry 3 of the major Detroit Sports teams...

but as far as quality sports talk rather than biased opinions or off-topic garbage, 1130 wins in a landslide

Editors Note: I haven't listenend to 1270 (except for a couple Tig's games) since I posted the original topic and work has been much more enjoyable not having to hear "first time long time" every fucking minute)

I'll listen to Mojo In the Morning before I ever listen to 97.1 again...

I agree that 1130 wins in most things, but one thing they do not win on is having Jim Rome. He is an insufferable boob.

This is a little off-topic, but I've been without a car radio for over a year and a half (car got broken into at my apt. complex) and this week I got a new car and I shit you not that the first thing I did was preset 1130 on my dial and I listened to it for about 45 minutes straight because it was before noon and I got to hear Seans' show.

P.S. When did his show go from 9-Noon to 8-Noon? I thought all shows were 3 hour blocks..........sorry if I'm wayyyy off base.

P.S.S. (that was gay) I heard MOLA1 on with Sean this morning hyping up Dikembe Mutumbo as a good/great player without a championship.

He has been 8 to Noon for awhile now.....after we beat down the "WTF" Morning show with Rob Otto

P.S. How did you get 1130 in your car?

P.S.S. (you're right, that is gay) what'd you get?

I got a 2005 Chevy Impala after I hit a deer on US-10. It wasn't just any deer though as this one had been hanging out with Barry Bonds and looked more like a Moose or a Grizzly Bear and he kicked my ass. I'm guessing by your question that you don't/can't get 1130 in the baby mobile? Every once in a while the signal likes to hide for a few minutes, but I've gotten great reception 95% of the time and its been great.

It's hit and miss for me. Some days it's very clear, others horrible competition with static. For whatever reason, it's especially bad when I'm at a major intersection. At Gratiot and Miller, State and Center, and Mackinaw and Tittabawassee are three places I know I get horrible reception. Also, the reception tends to get horrible right when the sports update I've been waiting for comes on. Then it clears up afterward when it's on the commercial for Lady Jane's, A.D.A.M, Capital Mortgage Funding, or something else is on.
