View Full Version : Homage: A Symphonic Tribute to the 2003-2004 World Champion Detroit Pistons
Atticus771 04-23-2008, 02:12 PM A while back, I said I'd have something to share with you guys. This is it!
Many of you know that I'm a composer. Consequently, I had to complete a substantial composition as part of my degree requirements. Given total freedom with the project, I chose to bridge the gap between classical music and pro sports and compose a tribute to the most recent Pistons' championship team.
Below is a video of the performance of my piece, titled "Homage: A Symphonic Tribute to the 2003-2004 World Champion Detroit Pistons." Hope you guys like it!
Note: I had to add a little bit of an intro just for the heck of it.
Note2: You guys will probably hear some elements of Pistons culture in the music. If you're curious about how the piece is a tribute to the Pistons, I'd be happy to post my program notes in this thread.

Pheeew 04-23-2008, 07:45 PM Do the chimes symbolize Big Ben?
and good job BTW
Timone 04-23-2008, 07:47 PM More like Homerage.
Just kidding, nice stuff.

Yup, the chimes, and moreso the gong, symbolize Ben.
And thanks. :)
MoTown 04-23-2008, 09:11 PM This is impressive stuff, Atticus. You wrote the whole thing?
Pheeew 04-23-2008, 10:27 PM I almost went into music composition. Instead I chose the fantastic world of web design.
Zekyl 04-23-2008, 11:34 PM How's web design working out for you? That's what I'm working on right now to go along with an e-commerce degree.
Atticus771 04-23-2008, 11:52 PM This is impressive stuff, Atticus. You wrote the whole thing?
Yup. It took about two months, but I hammered out every last note.
Very cool. I do some film scoring myself, and I've been very tempted to write something to a Pistons mix just for fun. What particular field are you looking to get into once you get out of school?

I'm also majoring in music education, with an emphasis in instrumental conducting, so I hope to find my first job as an assistant director of bands at the high school level. I will definitely keep composing though, while seeking to publish works and supplement my income.
Zekyl 04-24-2008, 09:08 AM What instruments can you play?

I find that amazing. I've never been a musician of any sorts, but listening to classical music just amazes me. The level of detail that goes into that is incredible. Fantastic job, Atticus.
Big Swami 04-24-2008, 09:55 AM This is excellent and needs to be used as the soundtrack to a sweet photo montage, John Oliver style.
Atticus771 04-24-2008, 11:14 AM What instruments can you play?
My primary instrument is trombone, and I'm decent on baritone (euphonium), trumpet, and tuba. I've had training in every brass, percussion, and woodwind instrument, but I can't claim to play all of them at a decent level. With most of woodwind and percussion instruments, I'm at a 7th grade level - good enough to teach beginners how to play, but not good enough to perform on those instruments.
Atticus771 04-24-2008, 11:16 AM What do you guys think about sending the finished recording of my piece to the Pistons? I was thinking of sending it to Keith Langlois. The organization ought to know that someone composed a piece for it, right?
Wizzle 04-24-2008, 11:25 AM hell yeah you should, nice work
Zekyl 04-24-2008, 11:25 AM I'd do it. I think they could do something with that. It's very impressive.
Glenn 04-24-2008, 11:28 AM It might not be better than "Simplicity" by Bob Seger, but it's probably the second best Pistons-inspired song of the year.
(joking)
Pheeew 04-24-2008, 11:32 AM How's web design working out for you? That's what I'm working on right now to go along with an e-commerce degree.
It's kind of slow for me right now, but I do it on the side. I went to Baker College for the Web program and it pissed me off how out-of-date their classes can be and how out-of-place some of their teachers are. I benefited the most from my internship and from teaching myself.
My main job, believe it or not, is a Butcher. I'm a Meat Cutter that designs websites who almost went to music school... I did manage to get into a band now though.

Pheeew, you need to use this quote as your sig
Zekyl 04-24-2008, 01:35 PM I agree with Wizzle
I didn't feel like reading the thread, why are people sending their job descriptions to the Pistons?
Atticus771 04-24-2008, 04:13 PM Pheeew, just happened to see that you're in Muskegon. I'm a Muskegon native myself. Small world, even on WTFDetroit.
Pheeew 04-25-2008, 06:03 PM Word up! Reppin' the 231 in Skee-Town and such.
Glenn 04-25-2008, 07:45 PM What instruments can you play?
Skin flute?
What's a skin flute?
