Dolphins fire Cameron after 1-15 season

By STEVEN WINE, AP Sports Writer
January 3, 2008

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Cam Cameron was fired as the Miami Dolphins' coach Thursday by new boss Bill Parcells after plunging to an 0-13 start in his first year on the job and finishing with just one victory.

The dismissal comes three days after Parcells ousted general manager Randy Mueller and means the reeling franchise will have its fifth coach in five seasons.

Parcells began work Dec. 27 as executive vice president of football operations and quickly concluded the Dolphins need another fresh start.

It has been 37 years since the Dolphins fired a coach. But they never finished 1-15 before.

All but two members of Cameron's coaching staff were also fired, although some might be rehired by the new head coach, the Dolphins said. Retained were assistant special teams coach Steve Hoffman and linebackers coach George Edwards.

Parcells made the decision to fire Cameron in consultation with new general manager Jeff Ireland, hired Wednesday after seven years in player personnel with the Dallas Cowboys.

"We just felt in order to move forward and not look back, we needed someone in place who shared the same philosophical compatibilities we shared," Ireland said. "We didn't really know the guy that well. We were going to try to get someone that does share those things, and we weren't completely sold that he did."

Ireland said the philosophy he and Parcells share involves creating a culture of winning.

"We want strong character around here," Ireland said. "The vision of the team will be discipline, passionate players, highly competitive. And we'll be a big team."

Ireland said he'll have final say regarding all player personnel decisions.

The early front-runner to replace Cameron is another Cowboys employee, assistant head coach Tony Sparano. He's scheduled to interview Friday for the head coaching vacancy in Atlanta.

Ireland said plans for the coaching search were still being formulated.

"We're going to try to make a quick decision, but we don't have a timetable," Ireland said. "We'll have a broad range of candidates. We'll look into every possibility."

Less than a year ago, owner Wayne Huizenga hired Cameron over at least 12 other candidates after a two-week search, the most extensive since the franchise's first season in 1966.

Cameron was on the job 11 months before he earned his first victory as an NFL head coach. Until Miami beat Baltimore in overtime Dec. 16, he was in danger of becoming the first coach to go 0-16.

Miami has missed the playoffs six consecutive seasons, a franchise record.

Other coaches, including some good ones, have been fired after only one season with a team. The list includes Cameron mentor Marty Schottenheimer (Washington in 2001), Art Shell (Oakland in 2006) and Pete Carroll (New York Jets in 1994).

Cameron, who was under contract through 2010, maintained a consistently low-key demeanor with the media and his team. The approach won praise from the locker room during training camp, but as losses mounted, players became coy when asked if they believed in Cameron.

He was hired after five years as offensive coordinator for the high-scoring San Diego Chargers, and the Dolphins' offense improved early in the season. But when John Beck became the third starter at quarterback this year, the unit failed to score a touchdown in three consecutive games, and the rookie returned to the bench.

Cameron took over a team that had gone 19-29 the previous three years and was in decline following a series of bad drafts. Poor depth made this season's wave of injuries catastrophic.

Running back Ronnie Brown led the league in yards from scrimmage when he was sidelined for the season by a knee injury, and Trent Green and linebacker Zach Thomas also went on injured reserve. When 2002 NFL rushing champion Ricky Williams returned from a suspension, he lasted only six carries before a chest injury ended his season.

In addition, top receiver Chris Chambers was traded after six games.

The coach's office became a revolving door in 2004, when Dave Wannstedt quit after nine games and was replaced by Jim Bates. Nick Saban became the coach in 2005 but lasted only two years before leaving for Alabama. He was succeeded by Cameron.

Seven coaches started a season with a team that went 1-15, and only two returned the following year. Jimmy Johnson went 1-15 his first season in Dallas in 1989 but soon was winning Super Bowls, and Mike Riley remained with San Diego despite winning only once in 2000.

Cameron's only other head coaching job was at Indiana, where he was fired after five seasons. His career record as a head coach is 19-52.

The reason I could see Blank going for Carroll is that Carroll has already won it all at USC. Seriously, nothing shy of 5 straight championships is going to top his current situation. Meanwhile, for a guy like Petrino, he didn't win jack in college and could obviously be lured away by the chance to win again without a salary cap.
BTW, I think Carroll WILL stay at USC, because he has the roster to actually go ahead with that 5 straight championships thing.

As a coach, he's already mediocre. As a recruiter and motivator, he's outstanding.
Give him Michigan State's roster and he doesn't win 9 games.
He has boosters, LA, hot chicks, and history on his side. Pull in his recruiting classes, give them free homes for their families, and anyone with an open mind for new ideas can win a crapload of games there.

Give Carroll a salary cap and a roster he can't turn out in 2 years time and he's screwed.

Raiders coach refuses to heed Davis' call to resign

Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has been pushing for Lane Kiffin to resign as his head coach and is considering Dennis Green as a potential replacement, sources close to Kiffin and the team said.

Davis has gone so far to draft a letter of resignation for Kiffin to sign, a source said. Kiffin has refused to do so but has dared Davis to fire him instead. The letter, the source said, was sent to Kiffin two weeks ago.

Lane Kiffin

Kiffin

Kiffin, who was 4-12 in his first season as coach, has two years remaining on his contract at an estimated $2 million per year.

In the letter sent to Kiffin's legal representatives, sources said Davis stated that only he would have control over his staff and full personnel decisions. According to a source close to Kiffin, Davis had promised Kiffin when he hired him that he would have more control over staff and personnel matters than recent Raiders coaches. Kiffin was allowed fire offensive assistants and to name his own staff when he took the job after the 2006 season.

"I'm not going to comment on anything that has transpired in the past three weeks," Kiffin said from Mobile, Ala., where he and the Raiders staff are coaching the North team in the Under Armour Senior Bowl college all-star game.

The Raiders had no immediate comment.

Kiffn and Davis clashed near the conclusion of their postseason evaluation meetings when Kiffin expressed his desire to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, a source said. Ryan himself wanted out to join the New York Jets in a similar capacity, but the Raiders released a statement asking for speculation to cease about the defensive coordinator's future.

Just this week at the Senior Bowl, Kiffin and Ryan both said their relationship was fine and expected to be coaching the team in 2008. However, Davis has not rescinded his request for Kiffin to step down, a source said.

As for Green's candidacy, while team sources said Davis has reached out to the veteran coach, Green said Friday, "I haven't really talked to Al about any coaching job but, really, how many times has my name been mentioned every time something goes on with the Raiders?"

The Raiders will interview James Lofton on Monday for a job, a source said. The Raiders are looking for a wide receivers coach and Lofton was recently fired as San Diego's receivers coach. However, Lofton has interviewed in the past to be head coach of the Raiders.

Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.

But N.Y. Giants great Ottis Anderson’s fried chicken and secret dipping sauces won Rachael’s “Super Bowl Recipe Playoff” — judged by Iron Chef Mario Batali -- also beating out Jets offensive tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson’s crab cakes and BLT dip.

One quick going-to-commercial clip showed Harrington and Anderson clashing in the kitchen over a spatula or something. “This one’s mine,” Joey said. “Yours hit the floor.” Harrington must have passed it to him...

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Falcons (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=atl) released quarterback Joey Harrington (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5889) on Wednesday, leaving the team with only two quarterbacks as it prepares to address the position in the NFL draft.
The Falcons also cut veteran quarterback Byron Leftwich (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6343) last month.
The release of Harrington may increase the chances the team will take a quarterback, perhaps Matt Ryan (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft/tracker/player?draftyear=2008&id=11586), with the No. 3 overall selection in the draft.
Ryan, from Boston College, is widely considered the top quarterback in the draft.
The Falcons re-signed Chris Redman (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5104) to a two-year deal last week, but the only other quarterbacks on the roster are D.J. Vick also is serving an indefinite suspension imposed by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Shockley, a 2006 seventh-round pick from Georgia, missed last season with a knee injury.
The 29-year-old Harrington played in 12 games with 10 starts last season. He completed 215 of 348 passes for 2,215 yards with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions. He set a career high by completing 61.8 percent of his passes, but the Falcons were only 3-7 in his starts.

The Atlanta Falcons have reached an agreement in principle with the Oakland Raiders to trade cornerback DeAngelo Hall for the Raiders' second-round pick in the 2008 draft, pending the Raiders finalizing a contract with Hall, a source close to the Falcons told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

While a Raiders source said Hall and the team are nearing an agreement on a contract, the source close to Hall said there is "still a lot of work to get it done."

The Raiders source said the deal is expected to pay Hall just below what Asante Samuel signed with the Eagles. Samuel signed a six-year deal worth a reported $57 million, with $20 million guaranteed.

Hall, a former first-rounder taken with the eighth pick in the 2004 draft, would be paired with Nnamdi Asomugha, giving Oakland one of the top tandems in the game.

The move would also provide insurance if Asomugha were to leave as a free agent following next season. The Raiders placed the exclusive franchise tag on Asomugha, guaranteeing him at least $9.465 million in 2008. They still would like to sign him to a long-term deal.

If the deal goes through, the Raiders would have only one draft pick in the first three rounds. Oakland picks fourth in the opening round and traded its third-round pick last year to New England for a pick used to draft offensive lineman Mario Henderson.

Didn't know where else to put this, so I stuck it in here. The higherups can move it if needed:

As Long As We're Making Up Rules...

You probably heard that the futile attempt of the head coaches and general managers (read: the Chicago Bears) to pass a rule preventing punting out of bounds was overwhelmingly rejected. I'm sure some top league officials see some lost entertainment value in the strategic game of pinning teams deep inside their own twenty and preventing showy returns from stars like Devin Hester, but gimme a break. This is a key part of playing the field position game. It's maybe the stupidest attempt at a rule change I have heard in years.

BUT... As long as we are in the process of making up new rules, we have a few we would like to pass as well. These are all in the interest of the game of course.

1) Anytime a wide receiver does a stupid touchdown dance, the lights will go down, disco lights will come on, and Barry Manilow's "Looks Like We Made It" will play over the loudspeaker. Then, that wide receiver should get punched in the crotch by his teammates and sent home for being gay. Could not agree more!

2) Intentional grounding is totally legal if you A) hit a cheerleader in the face or B) hit a drink vendor in the stands.

3) Coaches should not be allowed to change starting running backs between July and September unless there is a season-ending injury. Also, Mike Shannahan should not be allowed more than one running back on the team at any given time. Finally, Tatum Bell should be kicked out of the league for good, because he sucks and kills too many fantasy teams.

4) Punters will earn 4 points for making a tackle and 1 point for taking on a blocker.

5) If there is a moment in a game coming up where a team obviously needs a timeout, they should be allowed to prearrange said timeout. It's not that complicated; there is a giant press box full of officials wired up to communicate to people on the field. Why can't one of them receive the instructions, "We would like a time out after the next play?" The jumping around like ape-men making hand gestures is a little old-fashioned at this point.

6) Matt Millen should not be allowed to use a phone, microphone, walkie-talkie, blackberry, or computer on draft weekend. Just lock his fat ass in a room with a giant bag full of Big Montanas and unlock him on Monday morning.
:cogent:

7) Should a team score a touchdown on the Reverse Fake Z-Post from Super Tecmo Bowl, the score will become automatically tied, regardless of the previous deficit.

8) Any time a mule, Irish soccer player, or super model kicks a field goal, the opposing team must count to "7 apple" before bringing the rush.

9) The Super Bowl will never, ever, under any circumstances be played on a night before a work or school day - especially a Sunday you God-hating bastards.

10) When referring to black quarterbacks, all announcers should be forced to say "jive turkey" instead of "athletic quarterback," because it's painfully obvious that is what they are thinking anyway.

Report: Harrison investigated in shooting outside bar

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison is under investigation in his hometown of Philadelphia in a shooting that took place earlier this week, a source close to the investigation told Anthony Gargano of Philadelphia's WIP Radio.

The shooting reportedly occurred early Tuesday afternoon outside a North Philadelphia bar owned by Harrison.

Harrison has yet to be arrested or charged with the crime. Police spokesman Sgt. Ray Evers had no comment Friday.

"I just walked off the practice field [at rookie minicamp] and heard about the incident, and that's all I know," Colts coach Tony Dungy said Friday. "We're obviously going to look into it. I haven't spoken to Marvin yet."

Calls by ESPN to Harrison and his agent have not been returned. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league was "aware of the report, and we are looking into it."

The source said the alleged victim came into the bar, Playmakers, around 5 p.m. and engaged in an argument with Harrison, who was at the bar. The victim then left the bar, heading to his car, with Harrison following. Gunfire broke out, the victim was hit in the hand, and a young girl was slightly injured by flying glass from a car that apparently was hit by a bullet.

Harrison
Police came to scene, but the victim did not identify a shooter. On Wednesday, according to the source, ballistic tests showed that the gun that had fired the shots was a custom-made Belgian weapon, and police determined that Harrison owned such a gun.

Police then went to a Philadelphia car wash owned by Harrison to question him about the gun. Harrison admitted owning such a weapon, but claimed it never left his suburban Philadelphia home.

However, the source said the gun was discovered in a bucket at the car wash, and tests showed that it had fired seven bullets that matched those found at the scene.

The source said police were contacted Friday by an attorney representing a second alleged victim in the shooting, and police are now waiting for that individual to come forward.

Raiders release S Schweigert
Associated Press

Updated: May 20, 2008, 7:20 PM ET

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders released safety Stuart Schweigert on Tuesday, cutting ties with a former starter who lost his job late last season.

Schweigert, a third-round pick out of Purdue in 2004, became the starter at free safety midway through his second season in Oakland and started 37 consecutive games before being replaced last season.

Schweigert lost his job to Hiram Eugene when he was forced to miss a game with an injured calf and then played as a backup in the final five contests of the season.

Schweigert struggled at times last season as a run-stopper and the Raiders set out to improve their tackling at safety this offseason by signing Gibril Wilson from the Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

Wilson lined up mostly as a strong safety during last week's practice open to the media, with former first-round pick Michael Huff shifting to his more natural position of free safety. That left little room for Schweigert, who missed the open practice with a leg injury.

Schweigert had 215 tackles and four interceptions in 63 games with the Raiders. He also had 20 passes defensed, four fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.

Stu was a perfect fit for the Raiders, too.

I mean, being one of the most well-known kids in Saginaw Township and yet thinking he could slip a fake ID to a cop when he was drunk and got pulled over, classic stuff.
Then several issues with alcohol in college - had him ranked as one of the riskiest picks that year, based on off-field stuff. He and Charles Rogers graduated the same year, had some classic showdowns on the field and in track. Both drastic underachievers, much impacted by drugs and alcohol. Sad. Saginaw.

Per RotoWorld...

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Dolphins will trade Jason Taylor if and only if they're offered a second-round draft choice.

Now maybe I'm underscoring the true value of a 2nd round draft pick, but given the shit we've drafted in the 2nd round the last decade (Shaun Cody, Teddy Lehman, Boss Bailey, Ikaika Alama-Francis, Gerald Alexander, Daniel Bullocks, Drew Stanton, etc.) wouldn't it seem like a steal if the Lions coughed up a 2nd round pick, and got a Pro Bowl pass rusher like Taylor??

I mean honestly, not that I think we're actually going to contend this year, but he makes us better team. We're going to be starting Jared fucking DeVries at DE this year, and he will probably get about 3 sacks and a forced fumble...

Again, maybe I'm just clueless as to how sacred a 2nd round pick is around the league, but having known how our 2nd round picks have been developing, and how easily we seem to acquire 2nd round picks (somehow we had 3 in '07), I don't see why the Lions, or anyother team for that matter, wouldn't consider making that move...

Somebody explain that to me, why is a 2nd round pick that valuable?? Odds are that player isn't going to be as good as Jason Taylor...

WTFchris

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that ex-Detroit Lions running back Kevin Jones is hoping to hear from the Chicago Bears, who just cut their running back, Cedric Benson, but still have second-round pick Matt Forte.
Jones, who spoke with Lions Insider Tom Kowalski a couple of weeks ago, is recovering from knee surgery.

Chicago Tribune, June 11: (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/cs-080610-running-back-chicago-bears,0,3997904.story) Jones, a former first-round pick of the Detroit Lions, hopes to hear from the Bears, according to a source close to the player. Jones' agent, Blake Baratz, did not return a message Tuesday. His client has worked out for New England and Tennessee this off-season without striking a deal. Jones, released by the Lions in March, will hold a personal workout for scouts June 28 in Saline, Mich., to prove he is fully recovered from a torn ligament in his right knee, suffered in last season's home finale against the Chiefs.

NFL hiring experts to spot gang signals
Concerned that some of its players are flashing signals related to street gangs, the National Football League has hired experts to examine game tapes and identify the hand gestures, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

"There have been some suspected things we've seen," NFL vice president of security Milt Ahlerich told the Los Angeles Times. "When we see it, we quietly jump on it immediately, directly with the team and the player or employee involved to cease and desist. Period."

Ahlerich says the NFL has long warned its players about the influence of gangs. Concern intensified after Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was gunned down following an altercation involving known gang members in 2007.

The concern was raised with first-year players at the recent rookie symposium, and a video on the dangers of gangs was shown to every player in the league last year.

"Guys come from all over the country, and who knows what they're really doing?" Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Dennis Northcutt told the paper

I'd love to know how they got their hands on these "experts"

Sources: Giants to trade Shockey to Saints
by Jay Glazer
Jeremy Shockey has finally gotten his wish.
The Giants have agreed to trade their disgruntled tight end to the New Orleans Saints for a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal is pending league approval, according to a league source. Shockey must also pass a physical.

The compensation is the same the Saints offered New York back in April prior and during to the draft ... and it was turned down.

The move comes one day after Jason Taylor was traded from Miami to New York's NFC East rivals in Washington. According to a report on SI.com, the Giants had held discussions about a three-team trade in which they would have ended up with Taylor, the Saints would have landed Shockey and the Dolphins would have received a pair of draft picks.

The emergence of rookie Kevin Boss during the Giants' improbable Super Bowl run — a stretch Shockey missed due to a broken leg — made Shockey expendable. Boss started six games after Shockey's injury (two regular season and all four during the Giants' postseason run), making nine catches for 140 yards and a TD.

Shockey's attitude made the move somewhat necessary as the Giants sought to avoid distractions from their bid to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

During the team's recent minicamp, Shockey reportedly engaged in a shouting match with GM Jerry Reese, just the latest controversy involving the outspoken former first-round pick out of the University of Miami.

Shockey's absence in Phoenix during the Super Bowl was conspicuous to say the least. According to some reports, one of the many sources of Shockey's displeasure with the team was that he was not allowed to stand on the team's sidelines during the game.

In the past, Shockey also had less-than-complimentary things to say about his quarterback, Eli Manning. In fact, many have theorized that Manning's transformation from a middle-of-the-pack quarterback to a Super Bowl MVP was facilitated by Shockey's absence.

Glenn

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Kyle Orton will start as the Chicago Bears opening day quarterback -- beating Rex Grossman in a competition that lasted through training camp and two preseason games.

The Bears open the regular season Sept. 7 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Orton started 15 games in 2005 and three last season. He's thrown for more than 2,300 yards and 12 touchdowns in his career.

Grossman led the Bears to the Super Bowl after the 2006 season but has often been criticized for committing turnovers. He has 30 career starts, with 31 TD passes and 33 interceptions.

Merriman to play despite 2 torn ligaments
by Jay Glazer

It appears the Chargers will have their main defensive lightning bolt after all.

Pro Bowl defensive end Shawne Merriman has informed the team that he will play this season despite having two torn knee ligaments, Merriman told FOXSports.com.

"I know what's at stake," Merriman said Wednesday. "But I had a goal with the team before the season started, and I'm sticking to it."

When asked how sure he was about playing, Merriman replied, "100 percent."

Merriman has a torn PCL and LCL in his left knee, but has postponed the surgery necessary to deal with those issues. He sought the opinion of several noted specialists in the last week. While all of them recommended surgery, the decision was ultimately left to the player.

"I'm putting the surgery off until I need it," he said.

Last weekend, as Merriman pondered his upcoming decision, he acknowledged the inherent risks in playing this season.

"It could be career-threatening if I did (play)," Merriman told The Associated Press. "It's a possibility. That possibility is still open."

Merriman, who will cohost FSN's Pro Football Preview, recently told FOXSports.com that he was looking for any glimmer of hope to be able to suit up this year for the Chargers.

Merriman has made the Pro Bowl in all three seasons he's been in the league, and was twice named to the All-Pro team. The 2005 Defensive Rookie of the Year has 40 career sacks, including 17 in his sophomore campaign in 2006.

He could screw his family (does he have kids) over big time too if he ruins his career. He's on a 5 year 11.33 mil contract right now, including the $9 mil in guaranteed money he got when he signed. With all his bonuses (which I'm sure he's reached) it's 15 mil over the 5 years. So he has one year left on his deal. That's a hard call to make.

He should have the surgery, sit out the season, come back his contract year and play like a beast to lead his team to the superbowl.

“It’s something I don’t think anyone has ever done before,” he told the team’s Web site. “Have I ever had a reason for why I do what I do? I’m having fun.”
Two years ago, Johnson gave himself the moniker—a reference in Spanish to his No. 85—and put it on the back of his uniform before a game. Quarterback Carson Palmer (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6337/;_ylt=Ah78mUylzDjYPcKxGFkPx4AdsLYF) ripped it off before the kickoff. After the season, coach Marvin Lewis—who dislikes Johnson’s attention-getting stunts—referred to the receiver as “Ocho Psycho.”

Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said the Bengals had no comment on the matter.
Johnson has been a concern for the Bengals this season. He unsuccessfully lobbied for a trade in the offseason, threatening to sit out if he didn’t get his way. When the Bengals refused, he relented and showed up for minicamp, but complained that his right ankle was bothering him.
He had bone spurs removed from the ankle and was limited at the start of training camp. In the second preseason game, he landed awkwardly and temporarily dislocated his left shoulder. Johnson is wearing a harness and expects to play in the season opener against Baltimore.

Saints' Arrington will sit out season

August 29, 2008 6:33 PM
Posted by ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas

No real surprises in the first wave of cuts by the New Orleans Saints, but there was one other move that was a little disappointing.

The Saints placed rookie wide receiver Adrian Arrington on the injured reserve list, which ends his season. Arrington, a seventh-round draft pick, had been very impressive early in training camp and seemed to have a real shot to be the No. 4 or 5 receiver. But a case of turf toe sidelined Arrington and didn't seem to be getting much better.

The Saints couldn't afford to keep Arrington on the active roster. The one bright side is Arrington will get to spend the year sitting in on meetings and will have an opportunity to get completely healthy. That's just the opposite of what happened with rookie receiver Robert Meachem last year. Meachem wasn't able to be a factor in his rookie year because he was running with a limp for about half the season.

Sideline incident raises more concerns about Young

Went to a football game on Sunday and a soap opera broke out.

Welcome to Titans ’08. If the game is dull, just focus on the sideline. That’s where the real drama unfolds.

It took only one game — a victory over Jacksonville, no less — for the season to take a strange turn. This team has issues at quarterback, be it a tight hamstring, a sprained knee, a bruised ego, a bad attitude or all of the above.

Frankly, it’s hard to see the Titans taking flight if Vince Young doesn’t get his act together — physically and emotionally. Playing great defense is one thing; having to constantly defend your quarterback is another.

By now you know the score: For whatever reason, Young appeared unwilling to take the field midway through the fourth quarter on Sunday afternoon following his second interception and a resulting cascade of boos from the fans at LP Field.

Eventually, he re-entered the game, only to suffer a knee injury four plays later. His day was done. But the real story was just beginning.

We’ll never know exactly what happened. Titans Coach Jeff Fisher immediately shifted into damage control. Young’s teammates were guarded in their answers to questions about the quarterback.

As for Young, he was observed in the locker room on crutches more than an hour after game’s end but left without speaking to reporters.

Mum’s the word.

But there was no hiding the chaos when Young failed to join the rest of the offense on the field with 5:57 remaining and the Titans clinging to a 10-7 lead.

As we piece the story together, it appears that Young began to experience some tightness in his hamstring after a short pass to his right was intercepted by Jacksonville defensive end Derrick Harvey.

Proper sideline protocol is for the player to notify a trainer about an injury, no matter if it’s a tight hamstring or a severed limb. That way, he can get immediate treatment and the coaches are made aware of the situation and can prepare accordingly.

But after throwing the interception and being roundly booed, Young went to the bench and sat down. No medical personnel were summoned.

When the defense forced a punt three plays later and the offense returned to the field, Young was AWOL.

That’s when things grew frantic. It’s hard to run a play without a quarterback.

“I came on the field and 10 wasn’t in the huddle,” said center Kevin Mawae. “I didn’t know what the situation was.”

Fisher then made a beeline to Young, standing several yards away.

After the game, Fisher recalled that his conversation with Young centered solely on the quarterback’s hamstring.

“He said, ‘It’s tight,’ and I said, ‘If it’s tight, we’ll go with Kerry,’ and try to talk him back into it and he felt good,” Fisher said.

But considering how animated Fisher appeared as he talked with Young, it’s hard to believe some other matters weren’t discussed. From the outside looking in, Fisher seemed to all but throw Young back onto the field.

But it’s no surprise that Fisher soft-pedaled this in the post-game interview. In two seasons, he always has been overly protective of his quarterback. It doesn’t appear things are changing in Year 3.

It’s time to get with the program. Young has to grow out of this. Sulking is no longer an option.

This is the toughest part of the learning curve for Young. At the University of Texas, he could do no wrong. The NFL is a different matter.

Titans safety Michael Griffin, who was Young’s teammate at Texas, gets it.

“Hey, fans are going to be fans. Boos are going to happen,” Griffin said. “Everybody has their opinions.”

Yes they do. And opinions are beginning to change where Vince Young is concerned. He made believers when he was NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2006. Despite some slippage last season, he quarterbacked the Titans to the playoffs.

But with a lousy preseason and the ugly residue of the season-opener, Young now has some catching-up to do. His teammates still voice their support in interviews but you can sense some concerns creeping into the locker room.

“Part of playing quarterback in this league is the ups and downs,” said Kerry Collins, who finished what Young started. “For a young guy, it’s a hard thing to learn sometimes. It’s not easy.

“There are times when you’re going to get booed. There are times when things aren’t going the way you want it to go. You’ve got to fight through it, and I believe he will. It’s just part of the whole process. No quarterback has ever been immune to it.”

Sounds like the real drama is just beginning.

Alexander cut by Redskins after four games

By Mike Sando
ESPN.com
Updated: November 25, 2008, 3:47 PM ET

The Washington Redskins have released running back Shaun Alexander after four games and 11 carries with the team.

The 31-year-old former league MVP had provided insurance while injuries prevented Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts from practicing.

Portis and Betts continue to battle through injuries, but the Redskins apparently felt they needed Alexander's roster spot to help with depth on the defensive line.

Defensive end Andre Carter suffered a foot injury against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 12. Several other defensive linemen are also dealing with injuries.

Alexander spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Seahawks, leading the team to the Super Bowl after the 2005 season. He has 9,453 yards rushing yards and 100 career rushing touchdowns.

Alexander was looking to make a comeback after foot and wrist injuries ruined his last two seasons and prompted the Seattle Seahawks to cut him in April. However, in his limited carries with the Redskins, the 31-year-old back never showed anything close to the form that helped him rush for 1,880 yards in his 2005 MVP season.

He didn't play at all in Sunday's 20-17 win over the Seahawks, even though he was returning to the stadium where he earned his fame as well as his fortune -- in the form of an eight-year, $62 million contract signed after his MVP year.

All six were punished for using a diuretic, which can serve as a masking agent for steroids.

The suspended players were running back Deuce McAllister and defensive linemen Charles Grant and Will Smith of New Orleans; defensive linemen Kevin and Pat Williams of Minnesota and long snapper Bryan Pittman of Houston.

Vikings’ Shiancoe shown on TV barely wearing towel14 hours, 46 minutes ago

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP)—Visanthe Shiancoe is having a breakout season at tight end for Minnesota. His national exposure is now at an all-time high.

Fox televised a clip of Vikings owner Zygi Wilf’s postgame locker-room speech after Sunday’s victory at Detroit, and Shiancoe was inadvertently shown naked in the background. He was wearing a towel that did little to cover him. The network apologized, but screen-grab images were all over the Internet.

Shiancoe wasn’t available to the media Monday, but he joked with a gossip columnist for the Star Tribune of Minneapolis about it. “How’d it look?” he told the newspaper.

But Shiancoe’s agent, Tony Agnone, told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that his client was embarrassed and hopes fans understand it wasn’t intentional.

NFL laying off about 150

ESPN.com news services

Updated: December 9, 2008, 1:41 PM ET

NEW YORK -- The recession has hit the NFL.
The league said Tuesday it is cutting more than 10 percent of its headquarters staff in response to the downturn in the nation's economy. The cuts were announced in a memo to league staff by commissioner Roger Goodell. The league is eliminating about 150 of its staff of 1,100 in New York, NFL Films in New Jersey and production facilities in Los Angeles. Goodell said these were difficult and painful steps, but necessary in the current economic environment. The NFL has been symbolic of the wealth surrounding professional sports, but it now joins the NBA, Major League Baseball and NASCAR in announcing layoffs. In a related development, the NFL has indefinitely suspended plans to play a preseason game in China as the New England Patriots closed their operations there, according to Sports Business Journal. "There has been some belt-tightening given the economy, and one of the things we suspended was our operation there," Patriots spokesman Stacey James said, according to the report. The Patriots, the only NFL team with an on-site presence in China, had been slated to play a preseason game there as early as 2009. That game will not occur, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said, according to the report. That decision became "increasingly apparent earlier this year once we locked into having three years of games in the [United Kingdom]," McCarthy said, according to the report.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who rejected a chance to become head coach of the Browns last weekend, is not going to interview for the head coaching position of the New York Jets, according to multiple sources.

Cowher, according to a source, has been contacted by the Jets. Although he is interested in the Jets job, he told the team he would not be a candidate because he would like to bring in his own personnel director. Jets owner Woody Johnson plans to keep Mike Tannenbaum as his general manager after firing Eric Mangini as head coach Monday.

With Tannenbaum as the general manager, Cowher is willing to pass on the Jets opportunity, stay in broadcasting for another year and wait to return to coaching in 2010.

Cowher has told friends the Jets job interested him for several reasons. First, Cowher would love to coach in the New York market. Second, two of his daughters are either going to school or working in the New York-New Jersey area.

Cowher does plan to coach in 2010. In 2009, though, he was only willing to return if every situation was right for him. He wanted to have a two-year break from coaching to be with family and recharge.

Last weekend, Cowher met with Browns owner Randy Lerner, who asked him what it would take financially for him to be the Browns head coach. Having a close relationship with the Rooney family in Pittsburgh and still wanting more time with the family, Cowher didn't give Lerner a price, and said no.

Cowher recently extended his contract with CBS for another season.
