Carlisle, Izzo in running for Bulls job

While Rick Carlisle is the leading candidate for the Chicago Bulls coaching job, multiple league sources say that an intriguing name has gained momentum within the franchise’s front office: Michigan State’s Tom Izzo.

Bulls GM John Paxson granted Carlisle the first interview in the process, two league sources said, and Carlisle made a strong impression. But Chicago officials were still busy gathering intelligence on him Tuesday, reaching out around the league to those who had worked with him at stops with the Pacers and Pistons.

Nevertheless, the search won’t be limited to Carlisle. There’s been much internal discussion over Izzo, whom many NBA officials believe is one of the rare college coaches who can make the transition to the pros.

When reached on Tuesday night, Izzo told Yahoo! Sports that he hadn’t been contacted by the Bulls, but sounded willing to discuss the job with them.

“I’m not counting out any (job openings) because you can’t,” Izzo said. “College or pro.

“I go back and forth on (coaching in the NBA),” he continued. “I still think it’s the ultimate level. There is something about it. I look at it and say, ‘It’s a real challenge.’ But I love what I do too. I go down and look at what the Pistons (coaches) do in preparation and I think, ‘That’s insane.’

“But I look at what I do in terms of recruiting and I think, ‘That’s insane.’ ”

The Bulls are under the impression, sources said, that Izzo is eager to speak with them. Some believe he has grown restless in East Lansing, and it’s believed he would’ve become the Kansas coach had Bill Self taken the Oklahoma State job.

This could make Izzo, 53, a wild card in this search. He is one of the dominant coaches in the college game, responsible for four Final Fours and the 2000 NCAA title at Michigan State. Even after turning down the Atlanta Hawks within weeks of his national championship and another overture from the Toronto Raptors in 2003, Izzo has long been a student of the NBA coaching game.

He is also represented by Lonnie Cooper, the most powerful pro and college coaching agent in the business.

While college coaches have historically struggled in the pros, most have been hired to struggling franchises. Izzo thought long and hard about the five-year, $15 million offer the Hawks made him eight years ago – at the time, a gold mine for a college coach – but ultimately was convinced that he had little chance to be successful what with the dysfunctional state of the Hawks franchise.

For a son of the Midwest like Izzo, though, the Bulls job would have a different appeal. Owner Jerry Reinsdorf is believed to have some hesitation about hiring a college coach. His experiment with Iowa State’s Tim Floyd had disastrous results following his hiring in1998. Memphis coach John Calipari has tried to get involved with the Bulls job, but has been rebuffed, sources said.

Izzo, who has spent nearly his entire career as either an assistant or head coach in East Lansing, said he can’t say yet what he’d do if the Bulls call. He returns the bulk of a team that went to the Sweet 16 and has another strong recruiting class. Still, he could be at a coaching crossroad in his career, when a fresh challenge could be the preferred path.

“Until I hear something,” Izzo said, “it’s hard to say.”

I thought about posting that without the link, but it sounds too perfect, almost like I wrote it myself.

Possible replacements at MSU for Izzo (off the top of my head):

Tom Crean (oh, wait...)
Scott Skiles (um...)
Sam Vincent
Jim Boylan (or would he stay in Chicago with Izzo?)
Jim Boylen (would he leave Utah so soon?)
Dwayne Stephens (lol)
Stan Heath

I'm sure I'll come up with some more candidates from the famed "Izzo coaching tree" later on.

Will a Mr. Mateen Cleaves please pick up the green and white courtesy phone?

Let's see how quickly the Izzo denial comes (probably via the LSJ or Channel 10.) No matter if it does, those quotes are out there now (again).

I would prefer Izzo NOT take the Chicago job, because when the Pistons make an early exit from the playoffs Flip will be fired and I'll want Izzo coaching them, as opposed to a division rival.

I believe the opposite, I want the College coach Izzo to coach Chicago as he gets his dose of NBA reality like every college coach before him. I dont get the Izzo crack everyone here smokes. Dude is an established College HC. Not an established HC overall. Just like Rick Pitino and John Calipari before him. The day Joe Dumars puts stock into a college coach with no experience is the day i no longer back him as a GM and get ready for some furious futility. Flip Saunders>>>>>>>>>Tom Izzo, which doesnt say much. In college you got a whole university backing your authority, in the pros you may be the one who gets axed in a dispute if the player is valuable to the team as you answer to the GM before you can remove anybody.

Izzo, who has spent nearly his entire career as either an assistant or head coach in East Lansing,
as about as inexperienced as you get. I wonder how this looks to anyone who isnt from michigan or a fan of michigan related teams?

Izzo is a great TEAM coach, who institutes team over individual. That will not work at the professional level. He never uses his best players best assets, and that's why he will not succeed in the NBA. His team approach works great for college defense, but that won't work when you have whiney professionals wanting to play their way.

Izzo needs to stay at MSU. If he's looking for a challenge, wait until a bigger college coaching job is available.

Izzo-Bulls speculation

Here's what Tom Izzo told me at 8:30 this morning about a Yahoo! report that he's a candidate for the Chicago Bulls job: "I can definitely tell you I've never been contacted by anybody. The answer is no. I 100 percent have not been contacted by anybody there."

As Izzo sees it, wouldn't he know if he were actually a candidate? Still, the Yahoo! report, citing "multiple league sources," claims Izzo is gaining steam in the Bulls front office and will be contacted.

So what would he do if contacted? Would he give it serious consideration?

"I don't know if I would or not," he said from Milwaukee. "I really don't. I've got a class (coming in) here, we've got a chance to do some things."

Izzo said last year about the Kentucky job and has said in recent years about other jobs that he'll always listen and will never completely rule anything out. That's his stance, and I would expect him to sit down with John Paxson and hear him out if contacted.

For one thing, Izzo has always been intrigued by the prospect of coaching at the highest level. For another, this is not the typical, two-bit organization (see: Atlanta in 2000) that goes after college coaches and fires them two or three years later.

He might listen here. But I'd put the chances of Izzo bolting East Lansing for Chicago in the same neighborhood as the chances of Drew Neitzel starting at center for the Bulls next year. It's just my opinion, but it's an educated opinion, and I don't think there's any way he leaves what he has in front of him in East Lansing right now.

It's always interesting to read a story about a source to a source, and hear the source make sounds of exasperation in the background.

Izzo is on his way to Milwaukee, visiting 2008 recruit Korie Lucious and recruiting 2009 prospect Jamil Wilson. He was not in front of a computer, so I read him the report, including this paragraph:
"The Bulls are under the impression, sources said, that Izzo is eager to speak with them..." (chuckle)

"Some believe he has grown restless in East Lansing..." (groan)

"...and it’s believed he would’ve become the Kansas coach had Bill Self taken the Oklahoma State job."

"What?!" Izzo said after hearing that line. "Are you kidding me? Where does that come from? ... Kansas was five years ago!"

It appears I left him a bit frustrated. Meanwhile, all you MSU fans are going to be leaning forward in your chairs until Chicago hires Rick Carlisle or someone other than Izzo. But I really don't think you'll have to get too close to the edge.

News 10 sports spoke to MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo at the Crosstown Showdown baseball game Thursday night at Oldsmobile Park, he said that he has not spoken with the Chicago Bulls and the rumors of that happening are not true.

Yahoo Sports first reported on Tuesday Izzo was at or near the top of the Bulls list along with Rick Carlisle.

When asked if he was intrigued by coaching in the NBA some day Izzo replied, "It is the top of anyone's profession but intrigue me maybe, make me want to do it not really."

Stay tuned to News 10 Sports for further developments.

Great editing on that quote.
