Garnett wins NBA's Defensive Player of Year Award

NEW YORK -- Boston's Kevin Garnett won the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year Award on Tuesday. He beat out Denver's Marcus Camby and Houston's Shane Battier.

The 6-foot-11 forward led the Celtics with 9.2 rebounds per game. He added 18.8 points, 1.2 blocks and 1.4 steals.

Garnett helped the Celtics to league-best records of 66-16 (.805) overall and 31-10 (.738) on the road. Boston held opponents to just 90.3 points (second in the NBA) after allowing 99.2 points per game a season ago. The Celtics had the biggest one-year turnaround in NBA history.

Garnett received 493 points, including 90 first-place votes. Camby, who won the award last season, finished second with 178 points and Battier had 175 points.

I'd still love to get Battier on the Pistons.

Who the hell would vote Camby 2nd?? His team allows 450 ppg to their opponents...

Same goes for Raja Bell too, players who play on teams that as a whole are atrocious defensively, should automatically eliminate them from finishing in the top 5 of that award...

Disagree.

Camby's job is that much harder because he's the only one in Denver with a defensive mindset. (that said, he gets more blocks because opponents get right into the paint at will)

AI has a good defensive rep, but he's one of those guys that just gambles a lot and racks up steals.

Camby's one of the few defensive players that can change a game, one that opponents have to gameplan for (Dwight Howard is another). Sort of a present day Ben Wallace, with more offensive game.

This one was only obvious during the course of the entire season.

I'm not saying Camby isn't a good defensive player...

I'm just saying he shouldn't win the award, KG made his entire team better defensively, Paul Pierce stepped up his defensive game drastically...

Perhaps Thibodeau or w/e gets some of the credit...

Camby doesn't make any of his teamates better defensively...George Karl deserves some blame for that

Hey!! I love Camby, let's not turn this into a bashing thread.

What is Camby supposed to do when the rest of the team doesn't care about defense? You can't put Dirk on a team filled with bad shooters and expect them to be the Mavs offense either. KG deserves credit for the team improvement on defense, but a big part of that is coaching as well, and having players who will accept playing defense.

4 Pistons got some DPOY votes, more players than from any other team.

That and 16 wins will make me happy.

Not sure I agree w/ Dwight Howard being up so high, he can rebound, but so can Andris Biedrins, Chris Bosh went to work on him last night, he's not a terrible defender, but he's not a first/second/third teamer defensively...
