Pheonix has looked very impressive against SA since they got Shaq. Very nice that Kerr gets to see how his trade worked out in the opening round of the playoffs.

Timone
04-17-2008, 11:17 AM
In their 3 wins, they didn't even reach 100 once.

Of course, playoffs are an entirely different beast, but they at least look capable of going on the road and winning a tight, low scoring (by their standards) game.

Glenn
04-17-2008, 11:27 AM
As much as I'd like them to lose early and put a quick end to the DONE project, I think Parker's penetration gets the Spurs past the Suns.

As hard as it will be for me to do, I'll be pulling for the Suns to avenge last year's "David Stern Special".

At least the Suns bench is much, much better than the Spurs bench, IMO.

I hope they at least take the series to 6 or 7 games to further wear out the old men.

Timone
04-17-2008, 11:29 AM
I'm tired of Suns fans bitching about the series with SA last year. Yeah, they should be pissed off, but they should really be upset with their team for blowing the game they didn't have Stoudemire for (Game 5). Up double digits in the 4th, I believe.

Either way, I'll be pulling for PHX too (and I NEVER do that). I want to see Suns-Hornets in the 2nd round.

Glenn

I think Marion's defense would have been huge in this series, fwiw.

I actually think Suns-Lakers might be the WCF, but that means Phoenix would have to beat NO in the 2nd round and the Hornets pwn them.

If he isn't the biggest key, Grant Hill has to be one of them IMO.

I hated the Suns when they had Marion, but I've been warming up to them as of late. Not that I'm a fan or anything, it's just at the point where I'm not rooting against them because I dislike him. I'm even rooting for them in some cases, like in this series.

this game looks like all the reg season matchups since shaq got to phx. his presence has made every single guy on phx better.

if horry hip checked nash this year, nahs would probably stab him, and then while horry was dealing with the stabbing shaq and amare would probably come out with clubs and beat on him. then boris diaw would mace him in the eyes.

phx is a likeable team now that theyre not so 'lil buddy' ish.

Kstat

They don't care what happens after this. They just want to beat the spurs once.

Nash finds a wide open Amare under the hoop for an And 1 play.
That is why the Shaq trade works, Shaq cut off the helpside to Amare.
Then on the other side, Shaq blocks a SAS drive, and sends Pheonix on a fast break to put them up 93-90

that shot did go back to that one duncan hit in 04. duncan is the best pf all time. it owuld seem that being clutch is in his bag of tricks also.

i think phx is fine for the series. they were the better team today, they just didnt close the door. they can still split phx, which is all they needed to do.

series dont start til a road team wins. even if phx loses game 2, they can still hold serve. everything i saw today said they were the better team.

without shaq nash balls up into the fatal position and sucks his thumb for the next two days. with shaq phx probably spends the next 48 hours at pool halls getting into 'roadhouse' style bar fights, show up for game 2 15 minutes into the game, hungover, and sitll win by 15.

phx aint gonna be denied this series.

Glenn

Marion defends the opponent's best player in crunch time, regardless of position.

They certainly wouldn't have gotten the friendly escort to the basket that Snaq was giving them.

I call bs, i've never seen him stay in front of Manu. He's a great defender but alot of PG's and SG's in this league would burn him hard. Manu gets to that basket no matter whose there and like wade he kicks his legs out so getting to the ball would have resulted in a whistle as he tumbled upon touch.

They hacked a shaq in the 3rd quarter?

And the 2nd...

We might be more done than the Spurs Glennn.

Wow, what a disappointing series this is going to end up being. Steve Kerr's probably going to be back on TNT next season.

Major props to the Spurs though, this is the best I've seen them play in a while. They definitely don't look like a team that's done.

At least the Spurs aren't terribly myopic and all that shit.

Steve Kerr should have been fired the day he made the Shaq trade.

Black Dynamite

my money is on them losing even with marion. in fact losing harder. Glenn you're taking that angle because you think the more disciplined than us geezers in SA are done.

Nope, said it was a horrible deal from day 1.

I'm too tired to check, take your word for it. But the spurs arent done and you're skating on thin ice.

I said I thought the Spurs weren't going to make the WCF.

Have they?

Tahoe
04-26-2008, 10:53 AM
So by that logic 26 teams are 'done' every year? If done means not making the finals?

Glenn
04-26-2008, 10:58 AM
No need to twist everything around.

I said that I felt that the current group of Spurs was DONE winning championships. To help illustrate that, and in an attempt to be even more specific, I added that I didn't even think that they would make the WCF. I never said anything about what the criteria is for being considered DONE for any other team, I was just trying to quantify my opinion with an example and get on record with it.

You might be overthinking it.

Glenn

So, in essence, you guys have the opportunity to nail me for being wrong on two different things:

1)They won't win another title
2)They won't even make the WCF

Black Dynamite

so whose more done, us or them?

That's a good question.

One that I hadn't considered until last night.

As I recall, there were few if any who endorsed the shaq trade at the time. The crowd suffering from blockbuster envy wishing the pistons had made "bold" moves the way dallas and phoenix did was quite a bit larger.

I remember little to no discussion here this year about major roster shake ups.

At least not after the season started.

OK, who got in the time machine to go back to 2005 and get Boris Diaw?

He's gone from worthless slug to team MVP in 2 games.

Kstat

This is the funniest shit I've seen all month. Nobody on the spurs can stop Boris Diaw, and they've tried half the roster already.

This is exactly the kind of game Phoenix is built to lose. A tight game where you need to make critical stops down the stretch.

Man, the Spurs know how to play the refs better than any team I have EVER seen. Grabbing and pulling jerseys on defense and flopping and acting on offense...

Diaw just reminded everyone that he's Diaw.

Ok Doug. Game one of a series they lost three years ago. Get some better material, please.

That was some bush league coaching by Pop with all the hack-a-x in the first quarter.

Way to give your fans something entertaining to watch.

I don't care how successful you think that "strategy" might be, it's disrespectful to the game, especially in the first quarter.

Okay, time for my Hornets to shock the world.

I agree that there's no "honor" in the hax strategy but allow me to play devil's advocate on the question...

If you're a spurs fan are you truly upset that your coach does whatever it takes for the playoff win?

The player with the garbage freethrow shooting shares at least equal blame. A pro that can't eke out 60% at the line is pretty pathetic. The rarity of the hax strategy has more to do with the fact that most professionals can hit enough free throws to negate it than with a lack of coaches who'd exploit it.

Lastly, the overall impact of it is a little overblown. Using the worst freethrow shooter in nba history, Ben Wallace as an example Hollinger pointed out that there's about a 15% difference in expected points per possession for Cleveland if Washington goes to hack-a-ben. An edge but not an overwhelming one.

I thought the Bobcats were your team.

They are my new #2 team, yes.

I predicted a Hornets/Celtics final, and since there is no conflict in pulling for the Hornets as a Pistons fan, I will do so.

I also am a Chris Paul fan and want to see him do well.

I actually have no problem with the hacking stuff. You're an NBA superstar and you can't hit 3/4 of your free throws? Shame on you. You get paid 20 million bucks a year to make baskets and you can't do that from 15 feet with no defense? You deserve to suffer.

And I felt that way about Ben too. Get in the gym and fix it.
