It'll be interesting to see how many games Glenn thinks this will go.

I'll stick with 5, but it would not surprise me to see it go 6 (as previously stated).

I went with 5 because... well, when was the last time this team swept anyone?

Timone
04-16-2008, 12:20 PM
Last year, Orlando.

Wilfredo Ledezma

I say 5, definitely no more than that, and like last year, it wouldn't shock me if we swept them either...

Willie Green on Rip...LOL

Wouldn't shock me if they swept them either. Philly is not that good.

Loving the 2 seed. :)

They swept orlando last year? Damn, I gotta stop eating paint chips with my salsa... completely forgot.

b-diddy
04-17-2008, 12:55 AM
they might not be that good but they had a great run down the stretch. fuckers are like the 03 pistons. we might have the talent and shit, but we're also the complacent team and theyre the team thats going to be playing like a wounded animal. pistons have the ability to steam roll these guys, but i think its alot more likely that philly wins 2 games it has no business in. maybe games 3 and 4.

some dreams fade over time... but not this one. god am i psyched for the playoffs. i want 56 first round games. any less than 50 and i'll be suicidal.

b-diddy
04-17-2008, 12:59 AM
if i were to give the pistons any advice it would be that a noble spirit embiggens the smallest man.

the magic number in the first 2 rounds is 10. even with all that rest days in between series give you rest and practice time.

If the bench gets some love and we sweep, that would be huge stepping stone.

Kstat
04-17-2008, 04:23 AM
59 wins and the largest average margin of victory of any piston team ever.

Exactly how is complacency a problem on this team?

Pistons in 5, with a possibility of a sweep. Philly had their hot streak, and they've since come down to earth. 3-7 over their final 10 games.

They don't have a reliable halfcourt offense at all. If the Pistons keep the tempo at a slower pace, it could get ugly fast.

Fool
04-17-2008, 08:43 AM
What was the margin of victory for this team K?

Kstat
04-17-2008, 08:54 AM
7.4

That's over a point better than any other pistons team.

Atticus771

Pistons in 4, easily, IMO. Philly is on a 4 game losing streak coming in to the series, IIRC. Plus, they know they can't beat us. Regular season doesn't mean a thing now. I think we're geared up and the guys won't take this lightly. They don't want to make things harder for themselves. Last year, we should have had two sweeps in the first two rounds. I predict that we will this year -- 4-0 over Philly and 4-0 over Orlando.

I think we're all over-hyping the 76ers a bit. They are 3-7 in their last ten, have no bench, and Reggie Evans starts for them.

I think we sweep them now.

Timone
04-17-2008, 11:20 AM
I think we're all over-hyping the 76ers a bit.

I don't see that. Most of the picks have been 5 games or a sweep.

Hell, I thought it'd go 5 games at most before this series was even "official".

Glenn
04-17-2008, 11:29 AM
You don't have to give the Sixers too much credit to give them a game, maybe even 2.

The Pistons are perfectly capable of sleepwalking through a playoff game loss or two against anybody.

Timone
04-17-2008, 11:31 AM
1 game I can see, but there's no way the Pistons will "sleepwalk" through 2 games against them.

Timone
04-17-2008, 11:33 AM
Dis is how I C dis goin': Pistons blow 'em out twice, blow a lead in game 3 and lose, then beat them in game 4 and finish them at The Palace, IF they don't just come out and beat the shit out of them for 4 straight.

Even though they're expected to kill these teams, I think the Pistons and Celtics are going to be looking to send a message to each other.

MoTown
04-17-2008, 11:33 AM
All set, SDB.

Atticus771
04-17-2008, 11:35 AM
If any sleepwalking occurs, I think it would be against Orlando. This team is getting wiser (i.e. wise enough to take care of business against a vastly inferior 76er club) but probably not smart enough to know that they should sweep Orlando.

Also, no worries, as there isn't much in way of sharp objects at my place. My conductor's baton could probably do some damage with high velocity, I suppose. Speaking of which, probably in a couple weeks, I'll have something kind of cool to show you all. :)

Lightning illuminates the sky over the peek of a rolling hill. Thunder crashes with the coordinated steps of a 13 man army. The bright sky reveals the rain falling into puddles of blood. The blood of 59 nations.

Each cylinder pumps with fire, the engines roar with such ferocity it could move Blaha's comb over. As this mighty legion approaches the destination of fate, 4 obstacles stand before them. First, are cowering dogs from a cesspool of homosexual incest. They are doomed. Yet, they do not flee. This is not because they possess the virtue of courage and honor, no, they are a lower breed of bile. Too stupid to know when to run away. How dare they even stand on the same plane of battle with our Pistons, they dishonor God and curse the heavens with their presence at our feet. For this transgression their heads be ripped out of their torso SubZero style. And their bones are the meal of which we will mix with shit in our garden of victory. The fruits of which will be poisoned and served to starving inner city kids in Philly.

May Rocky be written out of the history books after our conquest! Pandora's box has been opened, The Rubicon has been crossed. The resistance of our opposition is akin to gas that fuels us faster. Detroit will drink the blood of millions, but the thirst can never be satisfied.

sheed is playing outstanding ball. if he can play at this level of intensity and interest throughout the playoffs, we can definitely win the title.

not to be overlooked- maxiell is playing fabulous. he came in and changed the game, getting to every loose ball and getting offensive boards, hustle plays, etc.

i would favor using him and then plugging amir in for a few minutes here and there, as he matches up well with their frontcourt. i know flip won't go that deep on the frontline but i think this is the perfect time to do it and the right team to do it against. amir can help. dice's minutes should be lowered in favor of this IMO.

loved hunter and stuckey in there together. lindsey was all up on their guards and made them uncomfortable. ditto for stuckey. not to mention rodney created some easy buckets for teammates with his dribble penetration and a couple of nice passes.

so far, so good. IF we play the way we're capable of, we sweep this team. they are a pesky, ultra-athletic team though and i admire mo cheeks for what he's done with these kids. but they don't belong in the same gym as us. our reserves can beat these kids.

BTW- dice is going to be our downfall if we don't take him out or remind him to BLOCK OUT! the sixers will kill us on the offensive boards if we don't pay attention to them. that's the only way they can really hang with us.

Timone
04-20-2008, 07:26 PM

i dont think you can discount philly here. young, athletic, AI is the prototypical sf that hurts tay. andre has also been a stud all year. combine that with them having nothing to lose and playing great ball down the stretch, and this isnt THAT big of an upset if we lose.

that said, flip saunders is a fucking moron. i guess hes trying to establish playoff rotations, but you'd think the fix was on the way he has benched any player that heated up almost instantly. our bench was playing well enough that the starters sucking should have got them in early.

exactly. LMFAO at isiah's comments: "now we can have that discussion" (regarding whether today's pistons could beat the bad boys)

the bad boys would have beat the hell out of the sixers tonight and scared them so bad that they'd go into a shell for the rest of the series. our current pistons not only lost, but they gave these kids hope that they can really beat us.

the bad boys would KILL our team today. we have no mental toughness or focus, despite all the crap we talk about 'not being affected by circumstances and being able to overcome anything, bla bla bla." we dig holes for ourselves and are not able to play even halfway to our potential.

shame on us. i hope the national media gives our guys hell as they should. credit to philly, for sure. they're young and scrappy. but come on- they have no business even playing us close, much less WINNING on our homecourt to start the playoffs.

but better start prepping your 'blame suanders' material cuz he is on borrowed time.

Yeah, how dare I hold Chauncey accountable for shooting %25 from the line late in the game and missing a wide open layup.

I suppose I can't Sheed too for missing a 2-footer to take the lead with 30 seconds left.

And of course, we can't blame Tayshaun for blowing a wide open 15 footer to tie it with 15 seconds left.

It's all Flip's fault.

Go sell the blame Flip bullshit somewhere else. It's pathetic.

And if the players think that he lost the game, then they all deserved to be shoveled out of town with him. What a load of excuses.

Higherwarrior
04-20-2008, 11:48 PM
if tayshaun's comments are any indication of what the team is thinking, we will be lucky to go 6 games deep in the conference finals, if we're lucky enough to even get THAT far- forget WINNING them or even winning the title.

when asked about the piston's loss prince said with a smile (paraphrasing) "we've made those plays to win for the last 6 years and we don't do it once and all of a sudden, it's a problem.....?"

i never expected this type of arrogance from prince of all people. maybe it's just damage control on his part but i'm worried it's a lot bigger than that.

the fact we blew some plays down the stretch doesn't worry me half as much as the fact that we even allowed the sixers to get back in this game to begin with. we should have NEVER been in a situation where those plays mattered. this is a game our reserves should have been putting the finishing touches on.

shooting 25% for the 2nd half? imagine if we were playing a defense like boston's or cleveland's or san antonio's.....? we still haven't learned a thing if this first game is any indication.

and while this might seem like another knee jerk post, i'm just looking at our mental approach and wondering how on earth we'll ever get where we want to with this sort of attitude. i don't know what else joe can do with this team to try and get them to play to their potential.

even the best teams aren't 'on' every night. that's fine. but when the effort and mental approach are lacking.....that's a whole 'nother story altogether.

i expect nothing less than 4 straight wins and a toughened mental approach to the playoffs. or else i'll lose hope in this team, both for this year's playoff run and the future too.

i hope the next game that rip is shooting 5-17 we go to stuckey more, the same way we went to j-max when dice was sucking. the message needs to be sent to ALL players. perform or piss off. we're not putting up with these half-hearted efforts any more.

Nope, we know what Lindsey is, are you saying we were to expect alot from him? Are you under the impression that Hunter left Hunter in the game ahead of Stuckey? I would only hope not. I wish he'd tell everybody he was the actual HC so we wouldnt have to hold Flip accountable for his same old coaching errors resurfacing.

As far as Billups goes, pussy performance, from the passing up an open shot to Tay to missing at the line. Rip was horrible too. you'd have a long waste of time hanging on to that as something nobody else here believes(besides b-diddy maybe, but who cares about his stance?), because everyone here hates the anti clutch lazy execution from our starters. But what does that do to nullify Flip's errors in coaching, especially clinching tight when he was too scared to coach his youth through a close part of the game? Its like you just read what you wanted to in this thread and ignored the fact the whole team was called out top to bottom. Flip is definitely no scapegoat, but he aint saint exempt of blame in this either.

Now that he fucked up, let's all pretend we didn't want him there in the first place.

Miller-led 76ers beat Pistons 90-86 in Game 1 stunner

By LARRY LAGE, AP Sports Writer
4 hours, 46 minutes ago

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP)—The Detroit Pistons were hanging out at the scorer’s table as if it was a preseason game, joking around with a former teammate as he enjoyed a drink and nachos in the front row.

Philadelphia made them pay for it.

Andre Miller scored 20 points and Willie Green had a career playoff-high 17, helping the 76ers stun Detroit 90-86 Sunday in Game 1 of their first-round series.

Sixers forward Reggie Evans smiled when told the Pistons were shooting the breeze with Flip Murray during breaks in the game.

“That’s good,” Evans said.

Rasheed Wallace took the blame for the loss—despite having 24 points, nine rebounds and matching a franchise playoff record with seven blocks—but didn’t think blowing a big lead had anything to do with talking to Murray.

“That’s my man,” Wallace explained.

The Eastern Conference’s second-seeded team was expected to beat the seventh-seeded Sixers by double digits and did lead by 15 midway through the third quarter.

But Philadelphia refused to follow the script.

After the Sixers trailed 62-47, Green made two baskets during a 10-0 run that sparked a comeback.

“That kind of swung the momentum,” Miller said.

Miller gave Philadelphia a lead midway through the fourth quarter for the first time since late in the first.

After Chauncey Billups missed three of four free throws and a layup in 2-plus minutes late in the game, he made two from the line to pull the Pistons within one with 45 seconds left.

Detroit’s Jason Maxiell drew a charge on the ensuing possession, giving the home team a chance to avoid an upset.

The Pistons set up a play that created an open shot for Tayshaun Prince, but his jumper was short. After Andre Iguodala made one of two free throws with 11 seconds left, Wallace missed a shot near the basket that would have tied it at 88.

“I’m going to put this on me,” Wallace said. “There’s no excuses.

“The last bunny, that was a bucket I should’ve made. I’m going to take this one on the chin.”

Iguodala made two free throws with 7 seconds left to seal the win.

“I’m pretty sure we shocked a lot of people,” Evans said.

Both teams will get two days off before Detroit hosts Game 2 on Wednesday night.

“We’ve got to fire back on Wednesday,” Pistons coach Flip Saunders said. “It’s a must-win game now.”

The Pistons, who have advanced to five straight conference finals, hadn’t lost a Game 1 in the first round since 2003 against Orlando.

Iguodala finished with a career playoff-high 16 points after a slow start, Evans had a career playoff-high 11 points and 14 rebounds and Thaddeus Young scored 10 for the Sixers in his postseason debut.

Billups scored 14, Richard Hamilton had 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting, Maxiell contributed 12 points and a career playoff-high 11 rebounds and Prince added 12.

The Sixers started and closed strong despite being the least-experienced team in the playoffs, matching up with a team that trails only the San Antonio Spurs in combined playoff games.

“There’s no question that we grew up in the second half,” Philadelphia coach Maurice Cheeks said.

Philadelphia led by six points early in the game, but Detroit scored the last 11 points of the first quarter and held the Sixers scoreless for 5-plus minutes. That drought spilled into the second and included a cold stretch in which they made just 2-of-21 shots.

Wallace’s 3-pointer midway through the second quarter capped a 23-6 run and gave the Pistons an 11-point lead.

The Sixers scored the first eight points of the second half and Detroit missed its first six shots before going on an 11-2 run to lead by 15.

The Pistons, notorious for their inconsistent effort, proved the cushion wasn’t large enough.

“That’s Detroit,” Iguodala said. “They turn it on and turn it off.

“We just kept fighting the whole way.”

Detroit Quickly Finds Itself On Edge

By Chris Silva
Special to ESPN.com

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Boredom has not settled in.

Heck, it's only the first game of the playoffs.

And like they've said in past playoff runs, the Detroit Pistons insisted there's no need to hit the panic button following their 90-86 loss to the upstart Philadelphia 76ers in Game 1 of a best-of-seven playoff series on Sunday.

The Pistons lost an important game and with it home-court advantage. But they said they haven't lost perspective.

"We expected a tough series," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said. "We're disappointed, we're upset, we're mad, all those things. They way we play, not turn the ball over, grinding things out -- we should win those games; we didn't. They played hard. I thought that we're extremely aggressive and it's not that we lost the game, they beat us. There is no question about it."

The main question now is if the second-seeded Pistons can regain their focus for a must-win Game 2 on Wednesday at the Palace.

Few expect the Pistons to lose this series. And even though the Pistons stumbled out of the playoff gate, their track record suggests it's highly likely they'll advance.

But the simple fact that the Pistons dropped their playoff opener gave reason to question their mindset, which has cost them in the past. As talented and successful as the Pistons have been, you still don't know what you'll get from them on a given night.

In the days leading up to Game 1, the Pistons said the ways in which they were ousted from the previous three postseasons still stung. They said they're hungrier and readier than ever to make a run at the NBA Finals.

But Sunday was a painful hiccup.

The Pistons have made it no secret that they love it when their backs are against the wall. But even they didn't expect to be faced with such adversity so early, especially against a Philadelphia team with practically no playoff experience.

"This is going to be tough to try to accomplish and get where we want to get, that's pretty much all it is," forward Rasheed Wallace said. "It's simple basketball."

But the Sixers made things difficult, and they probably surprised the Pistons with their second-half emergence.

The Pistons led by 15 at one point in the third quarter. Then it all unraveled like it has so many times before.

The Pistons committed an uncharacteristic six turnovers in the second half, many of which were easily avoidable. And then it was as if someone placed a lid on the basket, because Detroit (39 pecent field-goal shooting) couldn't make even the easiest of shots.

There were missed layups. Missed put-backs. Missed free throws. Then there were the individual showings.

While Wallace (24 points, nine rebounds, seven blocks) dominated the post, guard Richard Hamilton was nowhere to be found. Hamilton, who was bothered by a sore hip late in the season, finished with 13 points on a forgettable 5-for-17 shooting. Antonio McDyess, back in the starting lineup this season, missed seven of nine shots for six points.

Wallace had a chance to tie the game at 88 with 10 seconds left, but missed an eight-footer. Andre Iguodala grabbed the rebound, was fouled and iced the game with a pair of free throws. Iguodala got his offense going in the second half, when he scored 10 of his 16 points.

Point guard Andre Miller (20 points, six assists) and forward Reggie Evans (11 points) were the keys to Philly's fourth-quarter comeback. Philly's up-tempo style of play worked in spurts, and when it didn't the Sixers still proved they could execute and hang with one of the league's elite.

After the game, the Sixers walked off the court smiling and high-fiving each other. Their confidence shot up tenfold.

And that nothing-to-lose attitude that so many underdogs say they take into the playoffs was non-existent in the visitor's locker room at the Palace. "No, we've got something to lose, just like they do," Miller said. "We're here to play basketball and hopefully win. We've got something to lose just like they do."

Only for the Pistons, there's so much more at stake.

Except everyone here was all gung ho about playing lindsey in the playoffs ahead of Juan Dixon, someone that can actually DO SOMETHING with the ball besides dribble t in the same spot for 20 seconds.
Dixon is irrelevant, I wouldnt want him playing over stuckey either. You're harping on an agenda i personally dont care about. Dixon is an automatic score on the defensive end for whoever he guards, so i'm not regretting seeing hunter ahead of him. Nonetheless Hunter being called upon as the ballhandler is not his fault. We know what we get when he's the primary handler. Flip should've damn well known too. Your two best scorers off the bench were stuckey and maxiell, even with a shortened rotation you go to them first and foremost. You also trust them first and foremost. I felt like i saw a coaching revert back to last years playoffs(I've given Flip plenty of props when he did use the bench properly and will call him out when he fucks up the rotation). If he doesnt trust and coach his young guys rather than bench them at the first smell of adversity, we wont win anything. Mark my words on that.

Now that he fucked up, let's all pretend we didn't want him there in the first place.
Dont know who you are aiming that at, but I do want Hunter here. I think under the right circumstance he's very useful to us. But thats on the coach to put him there. Spotting up for a 3? I trust Hunter. Playing defense? I trust Hunter. ballhandling in the offense as a primary decision maker? do not trust him. Someone i'd put ahead of stuckey? dont trust him there either. I worried earlier this year whether Joe Dumars gave Flip too many choices to make in the rotation, I still hope i was wrong about that.

That much is true. Sometimes i think the only reason he follows me around is because I'm the only one that doesn't just ignore everything he says.

I need to do better of ignoring the irrelevant.
I doubt you can ignore him if you haven't by now. He knows he can get your attention now, so i suspect he'll bait you until the cows come home. But maybe its karma because you've baited a many posters on a many ocasions yourself.

Wow. Everybody needs to settle down. This was one game. I was annoyed last night, but it's not really a big deal. If they lose in the first round, that's a big deal. If this series goes 7 games, that's a big deal. But losing one game against a young, athletic team in the playoffs isn't the end of the world.

Let's get something straight - the Pistons choked. They should not have lost that game. They played like shit. They played with no sense of urgency. They pissed me off the entire second half of the game. Stuckey looked like a scared little bitch. Lindsey played out of control. Chauncey didn't seem to be his normal cool self. Rip missed A LOT of shots that he usually makes. The only two that showed up were Maxy and Sheed, and Sheed choked on the last shot.

But this is EXACTLY what the Pistons needed. Sure, they could have slept walked through the first round, but then they would have gotten their ass kicked by ORLANDO, who isn't a bad team by any means. We joke around about the Magic, but if the Pistons don't play well in that series, they will lose. Instead, the Pistons try and half-ass it through the first game, get embarassed, and now the media is laughing at the Pistons. Counting them out after ONE GAME into the post season. Good. I remember that happening four years ago when we lost to the Bucks in game 2.

The Pistons fucked up last night. They looked bad. I was embarassed to watch them last night. But if 3 days of ridicule and being the laughingstock of ESPN doesn't light a fire in their asses, then they don't deserve to win a NBA Title anyways.

So settle down, Piston Fans.

And one other thing:

Philly played their BEST ball last night. AI did not play well, but Reggie "Nut Cracker" Evans hit 17 foot turnaround J's, balls were airballed into their hands, and the bounces went their way.

The Pistons should have won anyway, but I don't expect that kind of performance from half of their team again. The Pistons are better at every position on the floor. If they don't realize that they need to bring it next game, then I don't want to cheer for them anyways.

Final thought:

The Sixers just acted like they won the championship. Their players were throwing the ball at the end of the game. Mo Cheeks was grinning like they were about to throw a parade for him. The Sixers players were hopping around like it was game 7. If you think that's what a team looks like who's about to win a playoff series, you're mistaken.

The Sixers have 3 more games to win. I'm not sure they understand that.

This is bad
I know the Pistons still have the lead but they're giving the 76ers way too many easy baskets. And then they're not converting on the other end.

most people said the 6ers wouldnt win 1 game, so i think they have a bit of a right to celebrate winnning the first one. realistically, they are a long way from round 2, and i dont think their mentallity is that they can beat us. and maybe it shouldnt. cuz the second they go from the young team with nothing to lose to the team thats trying to get into the second round, a ton of pressure enters into the picture and hitting miracle shots gets alot harder.

that said, its a mistake to say that was their best, either. keep in mind, this was a team that won (i believe) in 3 consecutive games against us, boston, and san an. if you took just their second half, they were a 50+ win team this year, and i think thats about how good of a team they are (assuming 2/3 of those games are against eastern teams).

i still think this series goes 6, and i kind of agree with those who called it a wake up call. dodging a bullet in round one might not hurt, especially w/ all the wrest our starters got this year. but at the end of the day, our team has a dumb coach, has fat cat players, and rasheed wallace--at the end of the first half sheed was an mvp guy, charles called him the most talented player in basketball history, and he was living up to it. the only reason i know he played in the second half is cuz he blew a layup to lose the game for us. hes too good to trade, but maybe too unreliable to win with... atleast at the extent that we lean on him.

Even with shitty play we could have won that thing with a few made free throws (Billups), making a wide open shot (Tay) or not rushing a shot when we could have up faked and dunked it home (Sheed with Miller switched on him). We just plain choaked away a chance to squeek out a win we didn't deserve.

I'm just as surprised as everyone else who knows a thing about basketball. However, everyone, including myself, knows that Philly still doesn't have a chance to win.

We shot 29% in that second half and didn't play defense. And we lost by a bucket. If we make one more of those shots (or free throws), we sustain Philly's best punch and win that game, despite playing our worst game of the season.

Game 2 can't come soon enough, IMO. I want revenge. I want order restored. I want the real Pistons back.

Losing one playoff game is nothing to get into hysterics about, but Game 2 is going to be really interesting in judging what kind of team this really is. Most of the mental toughness stuff is referring back to the LB years, this team has actually been pretty mentally weak in playoff times the past few years.

If this team is really a championship team and not just a bunch of soft East Coast versions of the Dallas Mavericks, they will win 4 straight now and deliver 2 blowouts.
