WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. -- Jean Pierre Orlewicz either planned and carried out the premeditated murder of Daniel Sorensen on Nov. 7 and then decapitated the victim's body to hide the evidence, or he killed in self-defense and mutilated Sorensen's body in a panic over reprisal by mobsters.
Those are the two scenarios that will soon be in front of a jury determining the fate of Orlewicz in the so-called 'Thrill Kill' trial. Closing arguments are over and the jury has the case.
Orlewicz, 18, of Plymouth, is accused of killing Sorensen, 26, of River Rouge. The defendant testified in his Detroit trial that he decapitated the victim and burned his fingers to hide his identity because he feared the man had mobster relatives who would come after him.
It is a claim that was reinforced Tuesday during closing arguments delivered by defense attorney Joseph Niskar.
Niskar asked the jury to consider the "fear factor" that he said came into play when Orlewicz brought a knife to a gunfight, knowing that his alleged victim carried a gun and was twice his size.
Sorensen was 6 feet tall and 280 pounds.
There was no premeditation, no time to plan in advance, Niskar said. There was only a plan to set the stage for an extortion plot that went wrong.
The mutilation that occurred after the killing, the defense said, was the work of a person panicking over possible reprisals by what he thought were Sorensen's mob-connected family.
Prosecutor Robert Moran painted a different picture in his closing arguments – one of a person who had time to reflect on what he was doing, thus deserving the charge of premeditated murder.
Moran pointed out that Orlewicz stabbed Sorensen 13 times while the victim held up his hands to fend off the blows. Enough time would have passed, Moran said, for Orlewicz to have weighed the pros and cons of what he was doing.
Moran also said that the felony murder count should stick, since Orlewicz also stole the victim's gun after the killing – after he threw away the bloody rags from removing Sorensen's head, burning his fingertips and then lighting the body on fire.
First-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life without parole.

Nearly a dozen animals were found decapitated and skinned on the side of a Superior Township road Thursday morning, where authorities have an ongoing investigation of similar discoveries.
A driver spotted the dead animals -- including two skinned foxes, two decapitated deer, a coyote intact and five skinned coyotes -- in the area of Gotfredson and Warren roads, Local 4 learned.
Authorities have been investigating after a terrier mix was found decapitated along a stretch of Harris Road Wednesday evening and a rotweiler was found in a similar condition on March 16, Local 4 reported.
"This was someone's pet. This dog was healthy and fat," said Julie Curtis of the Huron Valley Humane Society about the terrier mix.
The humane society responded to Harris and Geddes roads in Superior Township on March 16 to find a female rottweiler bound by her feet with duct tape and decapitated. The dog was lying next to five skinned coyote carcasses, according to a Humane Society of Huron Valley news release.
"I think it's the (fur) trappers maliciously killing them, and they're family pets," said Curtis.
Though trapping season begins in October and ends March 1, humane officials say these are the first instances involving a household pet.
Local 4 viewer Mark Sondergaard tipped the Humane Society in the discovery Wednesday evening. He saw a news report on Tuesday, then discovered the terrier mix a day later, according to the station's reports.
Sondergaard said he has a Jack Russell terrier, and it is "a little close to home for this to be happening."
Curtis said the Humane Society received more than 60 tips in a 24-hour period Thursday. A reward, which started at $500, has increased to $6,100 for information leading to an arrest and conviction, according to Curtis.

DETROIT -- The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the discovery of a decapitated woman’s body found inside a manhole on Monday morning.
The Wayne County Water Department told Local 4 they found the headless body in a manhole in an alley near Kercheval and Montclair streets on Detroit’s eastside.
The water department said it was called to the area to investigate reports of backed up sewage.
“I noticed it last night, it was like it didn’t want to go down,” said a neighbor.
Police said the woman’s body has been taken to the Wayne County medical examiner’s office, where they will attempt to determine how long the body has been down there.
“I live across the street, and it’s frightening,” a neighbor told Local 4.
Police said Wednesday that the woman was in her 30s, she was about 5 feet 5 inches tall, and weighed about 120 pounds. They told Local 4 that the woman had recent stitches on the upper left side of her stomach and a tattoo on her left arm.
Police added that it will be difficult to ID the woman because her head, hands and feet have been cut off.
A full-scale investigation has been launched.

An employee at the Ford Woodhaven Stamping plant was killed in an accident Tuesday afternoon, according to Local 4 reports.
Witnesses say the man was trying to move a heavy piece of equipment suspended by chains and cables when the device jammed and one of the cables snapped and decapitated the worker, Local 4 reported.
Employees at the plant were sent home around 1:30 p.m. while authorities investigated the incident. It was not known if the plant would return to its normal operating schedule on Wednesday.
Police have not released the name of the worker killed in the accident, but Local 4 learned he has been with the company for about 35 years.

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. -- Jean Pierre Orlewicz, 18, of Plymouth Township, was found guilty of first-degree murder Wednesday in the Nov. 7 killing of Daniel Sorensen, 26, of River Rouge. The sentence carries with it a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
Orlewicz appeared visibly scared when the verdicts were read a day-and-a-half after the jury began deliberations.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has said that Orlewicz killed Sorensen, then cut off his head and burned his torso for the thrill of it.
Orlewicz's defense attorney claimed that the killing was in self-defense and the mutilation of Sorensen's body was done in a panic over possible reprisals by Sorensen's alleged mob-connected family.
Outside the courtoom Wednesday, after the verdict was read at 4:50 p.m., Sorensen's parents, James and Kim, made religious pleas on behalf of everybody involved. All the families are suffering, Kim Sorensen said, so "please pray for them."
James Sorensen was visibly overwhelmed with emotion after the verdict was read.
"All the guilty verdicts in the world will not bring our son back," he said.
Orlewicz testified this week that he decapitated the victim and burned his fingers to hide his identity because he feared the man had mobster relatives who would come after him.
