Yorman Bazardo was DFA today...

Clay Rapada was recalled

Kiss Bazardo good bye, even though he was listed as one of our top ten prospects, we have no more options, and he will almost certailny be claimed on waivers...

I'm surprised we kept Beltran over Bazardo, since Yorman showed us in Spetember he was a decent pitcher

Tigers' Willis put on 15-day DL with hyperextended knee

Associated Press
Updated: April 12, 2008, 5:07 PM ET

CHICAGO -- Detroit Tigers left-hander Dontrelle Willis was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday after an MRI confirmed that he has a hyperextended right knee.

Willis injured the knee while delivering a pitch in the first inning Friday night against the Chicago White Sox and minutes later was taken out of the game.

"We know he's going to miss at least one start and we don't want to take any chances with it," Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said after a 7-0 loss to the White Sox on Saturday.

"Really at this point, we can't. It is a hyperextension, so hopefully after the 15 days he'll be ready. But we'll see."

Willis, who joined the Tigers along with Miguel Cabrera in a major trade from Florida, was making his second start Friday night for the Tigers on Friday night.

On his first pitch to the White Sox's No. 2 hitter Orlando Cabrera, Willis' right leg gave out and he slipped off the mound. He stayed in the game, but after walking Cabrera and throwing a wild pitch to Jim Thome, he was taken out. Following the game, Willis said he initially thought he'd blown his knee out, but later was able to put pressure on it.

"There is no tear, so that's good," Willis said Saturday. "We'll see how I feel tomorrow. I'll take it day-by-day. I felt better today, just a little stiffness."

Willis said it was a new experience.

"I never had anything happen like that. But it could have been a lot worse."

The Tigers have been banged up all season and gotten off to a surprisingly bad start.

Center fielder and leadoff hitter Curtis Granderson is out with a broken hand, reliever Fernando Rodney has a tender shoulder and first baseman Carlos Guillen missed Saturday's loss to the White Sox after straining a hamstring while running to first Friday night.

Gary Sheffield has been bothered by a torn tendon in his finger and Cabrera by a sore quadriceps muscle.

Detroit is off to a 2-9 start.

The Tigers will recall outfielder Ryan Raburn from Triple-A Toledo to fill the roster spot and later will bring up right-hander Armando Galarraga, also from Triple-A, to take Willis' slot in the rotation.

That just seems like we're wasting one of Raburn's options there. If we're going to bring up Galarraga, just do it. We've already got our regulars in the outfield, plus Thames and Thomas. What do we need Raburn for? I like his game, but it just seems pointless to me.

I thought I remembered Galaragga getting knocked around in spring training. Great. Sounds like this start of his will be very Virgil Vasquez-esque.

We're not wasting options on Raburn, he can be sent down as many times as we want because he hasn't accrued enough MLB service to be eligible for free agency. As long as he's on the 40 man roster, we can send him down 500 times this season if we want.

Vinny

If a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the active major league roster, he is said to be on optional assignment—his organization may freely move him between the major league club and the minor league club. If a player is on the 40-man roster and not the active 25 man roster for any part of more than three seasons, he is out of options and may not be assigned to the minors without first clearing waivers. However, if a player has less than 5 years of professional experience, he may be optioned to the minors in a fourth season without being subject to waivers. If a major league player is ineligible for free agency and "has options" remaining, his team may option him to a minor league team without consequence. This is usually what is meant when players are "sent down" to the minors. Likewise, when a player on the 40-man roster is added to the active major league roster, he is "called up" to the majors.

Tigers trade Grilli to Rockies; Cruceta to debut
by Danny Knobler
Wednesday April 30, 2008, 5:17 PM
NEW YORK -- Francisco Cruceta is coming to the Tigers, and Jason Grilli is leaving.

The Tigers traded Grilli to the Rockies today, in order to make room for Cruceta to join them from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday. In return for Grilli, the Tigers received 22-year-old minor-league right-hander Zach Simons, who will report to Class A Lakeland.

Grilli, a Tiger since 2005, was 0-1 with a 3.29 ERA in nine appearances this season.

Cruceta has been a Tiger since November, when they signed him to a $500,000 major-league contract. He missed all of spring training because of visa problems, but has been very impressive in three appearances for Toledo. Cruceta has pitched seven innings for the Mud Hens, allowing just one run on two hits, with three walks and 15 strikeouts.

Cruceta has only limited big-league experience, and he had a 10.05 ERA in six big-league games, split between a stint with Cleveland in 2004 and another with Seattle in 2006. But the Tigers believe he can be an effective late-inning reliever.

With eighth-inning man Denny Bautista struggling with his control (12 walks in 12 innings), Cruceta could even become a candidate to take over that role.

Grilli has never been a favorite of Tigers fans, often getting booed at Comerica Park.

"I think I did a good job for what my role is,'' he said today. "I know a lot of people might think differently. But to those people, I just say thank you, too, because I'm a bigger person than someone who doesn't like my eyebrows or the way I pitch.''

Simons was Colorado's second-round draft pick in 2005. In seven games this year with Class A Modesto, all in relief, he has a 2.70 ERA in 13 1/3 innings, with nine walks and 14 strikeouts.

It puts a smile on my face
You stand behind the counter with your khaki pants
and your white shirt on I love you just from a glance

You know my usual order, a tall power-aid skake
Hold the celery
You don even know my name
But I love you just the same

Here’s to you snackbar girl
You rock my snackbar world
Wont you run my life…from your snackbar stand
I want to be your snackbar man
I want to be your snackbar man

I called you in your dorm room
I said “hey, its me, can I have some ho-ho’s”
You said “no, no, we are clo-osed…”

It’s Friday night, I ma lone and I’m hungry
I walk to the snackbar the big metal gate is pulled down
I can see my reflection with a frown

Jacque Jones designated for assignment
by Danny Knobler
Monday May 05, 2008, 3:21 PM
DETROIT -- The first of the drastic changes has come.

The Tigers have designated Jacque Jones for assignment, and they've purchased the contract of outfielder Matt Joyce from Triple-A Toledo.

Jones had just one hit in his last 29 at-bats, and he was hitting .165 with one home run and five RBIs in 24 games. Joyce was hitting .299 at Toledo, with five homers and 21 RBIs in 28 games.

Jones was acquired from the Chicago Cubs last November, in a trade for Omar Infante. The Tigers saw him as a good left-handed addition to their mostly right-handed lineup, but he didn't hit in spring training and hasn't hit so far during the season.

The Tigers have 10 days in which to either trade or release Jones. They'll certainly try to trade him, but that won't be easy to do.

Joyce is also a left-handed hitter. He's a 23-year-old Floridian, and he was the Tigers' 12th-round pick in the 2005 draft.

Tigers swap outfielders, sending Matt Joyce back to Toledo and recalling Clete Thomas
by Scott Warheit
Thursday May 29, 2008, 9:37 AM
The Detroit Tigers have yet to find the right combination of players to put a significant winning streak together, and the team made another roster move early Thursday morning, sending Matt Joyce to AAA Toledo, and recalling outfielder Clete Thomas, who provided the team a spark earlier this season.

May 29, Detroit News: Joyce showed good power, hitting five home runs in 17 games for the Tigers, but lately struggled with a steady diet of breaking balls. After Joyce struck out in all four of his at-bats Tuesday night, manager Jim Leyland said, "they're working him over a little bit now, obviously."
"We really like him," said Leyland. "He has a future, he did a good job, but if you're going to have someone sitting around, you'd rather have a little more speed. Thomas provides that."

I'm not going to kill the Tigs for letting him go, if you saw what he did in spring training, there was no way in holy hell he earned a spot on the 25 man roster, and since he was out of options, it had to be done.

DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=det) catcher Vance Wilson (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6064)'s career might be over after a major setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Wilson missed the entire 2007 season with an elbow injury and underwent reconstructive surgery on his right elbow on June 13, 2007. The surgery included a grafted ulnar collateral ligament, and the Tigers announced Thursday that Wilson tore the new ligament while trying to rehab the injury.
If Wilson chooses to go through the procedure again, he would be sidelined for at least another 12 months, but the eight-year veteran is going to consider his options before making a final decision.
Wilson played his first six seasons with the New York Mets (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=nym) before coming to Detroit in 2005. He was Ivan Rodriguez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=4680)'s backup during the 2006 World Series run but did not play during the postseason.

Clete Thomas back with Tigers; Clevlen to Toledo
by Steve Kornacki
Wednesday June 18, 2008, 7:55 PM
SAN FRANCISCO -- Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced after Wednesday's game that outfielder Clete Thomas (ankle) was being recalled from the 15-day disabled list and his rehabilitation assignment in Toledo.

Outfielder Brent Clevlen (.208 with some nice defense in 10 games) was optioned to Toledo to make room on the 25-man roster.

Thomas (.292 with Detroit) could start in right field Friday night in San Diego if Magglio Ordonez's side and back spasms that occurred in Wednesday's game become a problem, though, Leyland did not believe Ordonez's injury would hold him back.

Ordonez said he aggravated it on a swing in the game.

Leyland added that the roster move to activate reliever Joel Zumaya (shoulder) from the 15-day disabled list will be made Friday in San Diego, where the Tigers open a three-game series that night

I've read some writers who hope Fossum gets a crack as the 5th starter. I'm not sure if they've seen his body of work outside of AAA. Remember Virgil Vasquez? A nice AAA starter that gets shelled in Detroit? That's Fossum. Pearson, 23, had a 6.85 ERA and a 15/16 K/BB ratio in 22 1/3 innings of relief between high-A Lynchburg and Double-A Altoona. He has little chance of ever reaching the majors.

Maggs has been put on the DL with an oblique strain or something.

That kinda sucks.

Tigers signed 1st rd draft pick Ryan Perry yesterday, and they told him they want him in the majors by September...

Perry told the newspaper that the Tigers would like him “to be in the big leagues … once the rosters are expanded” on Sept. 1, and that he will begin his pro career by reporting to Class A Lakeland this week.

Bonine and Sardinha we're sent down

Inge and Larish we're brought out, Larish will be back up for the next two series (both are 4 game series), so we won't need a 5th starter until July 21...

Clete sent down, Maggs activated...

also Sardinha cleared waivers, which shouldn't be surprise, so he'll go back to AAA

Chris Lambert's going to be called up to pitch on Tuesday.

Easy win for him on his first start. He's only going up against Cliff Lee.

For what it's worth, Pudge is hitting .192 (10 for 52) and has 1 RBI (a solo HR) since being traded to the Yankees.

So if Fansy were pitching to Pudge??? Just a bunch of foul balls?

One mistake that Dombrowski acknowledged was trading pitching prospect Jair Jurrjens to Atlanta for shortstop Edgar Renteria. While the Tigers were trying desperately to find starting pitching, Jurrjens went 13-10 for the Braves with a 3.68 ERA.

At the same time, Renteria lost 62 points off his batting average and turned into a defensive liability, leading to the Tigers buying out his contract at the end of the year.

“We thought at the time that Renteria would be a difference maker for us at shortstop — the player that could put us over the hump,” Dombrowski said. "There’s no question — that was a miscalculation. I wish I had Jurrjens back, but we knew we were giving up a good player.”

The Tigers also traded several prospects to Florida for another player that flopped — Dontrelle Willis — but Dombrowski didn’t have second thoughts about that deal because it also netted them Cabrera, who finished with 37 homers and 127 RBIs.

“I would still give up the players we did to get Miguel Cabrera,” he said. “I think Andrew Miller will be a very good pitcher in the future, and (Cameron) Maybin is going to be good as well, but we’re happy to have Miguel.”

I think the fans 100% agree with both of those statements.

Again, I don't think you can kill Dave on the Jurrjens trade since it was done before the Cabrera trade. The trade for Edgar was meant to be our big offseason move and lucky for us the Miguel thing happned so quickly.

The only thing DD should be criticized for is giving Nate Robertson & Dontrelle extensions. He did'nt have to give either of those guys guaranteed contracts since both had an arbitration years left.
