Its FoxNews, so I put a couple paragraphs there if anyone wanted to search and read the story on their fav site.

The Internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.
At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.
The latest spin-off from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the web, the grid could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players; and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.
David Britton, professor of physics at Glasgow University and a leading figure in the grid project, believes grid technologies could “revolutionise” society. “With this kind of computing power, future generations will have the ability to collaborate and communicate in ways older people like me cannot even imagine,” he said.

Can 'the Grid' automatically post flawless message board polls?

<yawn> It's more sensationalist stuff. The media is confusing Grid computing and Grid infrastructure, probably because the Grid scientist sorts are doing so to create hype. The scientist are right in that some of the concepts behind Grid computing could conceivably really change the way computing works. But, the network infrastructure behind it isn't a particularly compelling reason why. To invoke a weak analogy -- yeah, a 6-lane highway is neat in a world full of dirt road, but the real change is cars rather than horses. :)

Can the Grid save Saundra Bullock from evil software giants who will kill anyone to keep their secrets ... secret?

WDFN is reporting that the 'Grid Scientists' have hired Al Gore as a consultant. This is huge.

What are they teaching you about Grid economics?

e-commerce is electronic commerce, as in the internet. It has nothing to do with economics.

Uncle Mxy

Economics and commerce can both be defined as the exchange of goods and services. But humor me -- what do they teach you about the Grid in your e-commerce class? :)

Not much really, just that its in development and its going to make the internet obsolete. It'll be more secure, much faster, and it'll only increase the internet boom and the amount of things we'll do online.

My thoughts. It'll probably just add even more to the lack of interpersonal face-to-face communication, adding to the fat pathetic slobs that make up the United States. These people that spend all their time in front of the computer with absolutely no life whatsoever. I mean, obviously this doesn't pertain to the people on here, as we actually go away to have lives, then come back and talk about them. Hell, SDB's a posting machine and the guy's got a woman and kid. The pathetic people that live completely on the internet and have zero human contact just disgust me.

That's not what the Grid itself is about.

The Grid is "simply" distributed computing, the idea of having ubiquitous compute cycles "out there" that people can use for truly generic number crunching. It's like SETI@home on steroids. Yeah, there's a stronger authentication component to Grid access. But it's your typical certificate scheme managed by a bunch of science geeks and the sysadmins who love them, with typical certificate-based management issues and trust limitations. And, as a bonus, it's more DoS-able. The transport technology in place is IP -- Internet Protocol -- and the Internet isn't going anywhere. There's private IP-based interconnects on the Grid, mostly so that traffic for doing scientific research doesn't get co-opted by file-sharing the latest movie (the typical college usage of Internet2, the last "network to replace the Internet"). But there's always been private IP networks for such activities. (The relative insecurity of the modern-day Internet has more to do with U.S. government stupidity leading to sub-optimal design choices in the 70s and 80s.)

The Grid is just part and parcel of "ubiquitous computing", moving toward a sublime life where you can ping a toilet seat and know if it's up or down.

What are humans? Do they taste good with mustard? I got this book called "To Serve Man" but the recipes are a bit out there...

Now imagine if you designed:

1) an authentication scheme so you could permit/deny some kinds of compute jobs based on a variety of criteria (money, penis size, what you want to do)

2) mechanisms to somewhat generic-ize the job so the computer doesn't need to know something as specific as "pattern analysis looking for ETs"

3) a big but otherwise quite conventional private network for some aspects to facilitate some amount of real work without interruptions, as needed

and you've got the basics of the Grid and where it's going today. "Distributed computing, meet world. World, meet distributed computing." This isn't quite as easy as it sounds. It takes a bit of human and machine thinking for some computer program to efficiently use multiple CPUs on the same system, let alone when they're separated by distance. Then, instead of maybe a couple computers and CPUs, go for oodles and oodles of them working in coordination doing something relatively complex.

And as noted, all of this distributed computing is really a subset of ubiquitous computing -- not just big computers being omnipresent, but something taken as much for granted as driving, clicking through the TV, or breathing. That's where the real economics is going, AFAICT.

I'm in a talky mood today. Enough. Pistons come on soon. :)

So if they watch gay male porn too does it own?

Also oddly enough all the conservative ball licking that goes on that shitty excuse for a news channel could be mistaken for gay porn.

Either way you failed on ownage Tahoe and should be ashamed for pulling the "most idiots watch" card.

I'll stand up for Fox, sorta kinda. This seems more like a case of scientists running off their mouth than anything, and Fox biting on it. It might be a case of Fox unduly sensationalizing things, but I see enough unrepudiated hyperbolic claims by enough different scientists to suspect "academic chest thumping". Fox was duped.

There's much real research on high-speed networking for Joe User. But the Grid is no more or less relevant on that front than, say, WiMAX. On that note, the typical transport between Grid nodes, IP over terrestrial fibre, epitomizes big and boring, and that's not really what the Grid people are focusing on. They have a well-hung network to have sex with the God Particle/Higgs boson, not to do porn.

As long as I get to expose my shocking ignorance, I get an exhibitionist thrill.

Seriously, this kind of shit bugs me because researchers are supposed to know better. If an objective hard-science scientist is going to be a hype engine, they should be accurate to the best of their knowledge. To do otherwise is to fuck science in the ass.
