View Full Version : Big Swami's official "meat on the grill" thread, presented by Jason "Gas" Grilli Glenn 04-07-2008, 11:04 AM I made the propane tank exchange this weekend and charred some farm animals. BBQ season has commenced. What are you guys grilling? Hermy 04-07-2008, 11:14 AM Big Green Egg bitch. MoTown 04-07-2008, 11:17 AM Excellent thread, Swami. Wings and Pistons playoffs commence this week and next, and every game deserves it's own BBQ. I think I'll start basic and go with Chicken. :big swami: Glenn 04-07-2008, 11:21 AM We had a family picnic yesterday (had a bunch of people over to help put up a trampoline in the yard). I made some steaks, some burgers and some brats. Got lots of compliments, too. Glenn 04-07-2008, 11:33 AM Big Green Egg bitch. I had to Google it. Looks nice. (http://www.biggreenegg.com/) Did you join the forum, Herm? The EGGhead Forum is one of the most active, vibrant sites on the internet. Hermy 04-07-2008, 11:56 AM No, I haven't played with those guys yet. I'm getting my Egg after I move this June/July. Right now I have a propane pos. But I use my grill 3-4 times a week, even in the winter. Gives me a reason to "go behind the garage". Made some Ribeyes I bought at Steve's Bigtop on Sat. Zekyl 04-07-2008, 12:37 PM Odds on Swami actually appearing in this thread? Glenn 04-07-2008, 12:52 PM I'm pretty sure that he grills chickpeas or sticks or something. Tahoe 04-07-2008, 12:54 PM We had a family picnic yesterday (had a bunch of people over to help put up a trampoline in the yard). I made some steaks, some burgers and some brats. Got lots of compliments, too. Sorry but I'm the best bbqer that ever lived. btw...I heard that trampolines are very dangerous in Michigan. Glenn 04-07-2008, 01:03 PM btw...I heard that trampolines are very dangerous in Michigan. Thanks! I've never had it and am not particularly planning on it. Hermy 04-07-2008, 01:30 PM Are you sure that isn't Milwaukee? Back on topic, anybody like grilled venison? I've never had it and am not particularly planning on it. Had some last week. I have a bit in the freezer from this fall if you would like to sample. Tahoe 04-07-2008, 01:39 PM Every time I go to AA (thats Ann Arbor) my buddy sears(sp?) it on the grill. scrumptious(sp?) I love venison and morels(sp?). Michigan delicasies(sp?). Glenn 04-07-2008, 01:39 PM Matt, we need spell check up in this shit. Tahoe 04-07-2008, 01:40 PM Matt, we need spell check up in this shit. So he is around somewhere on the internets. Glenn 04-07-2008, 01:42 PM He's decided to become a lurker. Also, stop derailing this thread. Also, sorry, guys. i've been really busy w/ work, family, etc. hope everyone's doing ok! Tahoe 04-07-2008, 01:47 PM Biggest mistake peeps make when grilling... Not letting the grill get to the correct temp. Too cold, fucks up the meat, too hot, fucks up the meat. Turning Steaks more than once. You can flip chicken a million times and it won't effect its tendornessness. ONE TIME! Otherwise you can have the best cut of meat and you'll make it tough. geerussell 04-07-2008, 05:36 PM Biggest mistake peeps make when grilling... Not letting the grill get to the correct temp. My specialty was bulgogi - Korean barbecued beef. I was also pretty damn good with chile-lime chicken. Hard to enjoy grilling when you're not eating meat, tho. I've been working the crock pot lately. geerussell 04-07-2008, 08:29 PM I've been working the crock pot lately. Speaking of the crock pot... if you don't have fittyleven hours to lay a proper barbecue on some pork shoulder, the crock pot will produce the 2nd best pulled pork you ever had. An overnight brine, a spice rub and about three hours in the slow cooker is all it takes... and yes that's turbo compared to the "real" way. Big Swami 04-07-2008, 08:31 PM Also, even though the crock pot doesn't do pork as nicely as a smoker, you have more options as far as the marinade. You should try juniper berries! b-diddy 04-07-2008, 08:50 PM you gotta use the charcoal. i bbq'd chicken for the familly last time i was home and i smoked the shit out of it, giving it that nice charcoally taste. geerussell 04-07-2008, 09:18 PM real wood chunk charcoal > charcoal briquettes > propane > indoor. (... and real smoke > liquid smoke) Still, sometimes you've gotta make do with what you have at hand. Tahoe 04-07-2008, 09:21 PM ^ Agree...when you and the wife work, but you still want something grilled, there is nothing like the gas grill. MikeMyers 04-07-2008, 09:40 PM Just get a coffee tin and put some holes in it and put the charcoal in there. You can light it with just newspaper and the charcoal is ready in 20 mins. Tahoe 04-07-2008, 09:44 PM I'm eating in 20 minutes with burgers, dogs, kabobs. b-diddy 04-07-2008, 11:03 PM Just get a coffee tin and put some holes in it and put the charcoal in there. You can light it with just newspaper and the charcoal is ready in 20 mins. intriguing. do you have a grill (the actual grill part of a grill) to cover the tin? MikeMyers 04-08-2008, 07:36 AM You can buy one... http://www.amazon.com/Weber-87886-Chimney-Starter/dp/B00004U9VV/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1207654629&sr=8-1 Glenn 05-24-2015, 06:25 PM Didn't think I'd ever reach the point of grill fatigue, but I'm there, you guys. So short on new ideas, I'm resorting to johnsonville brat burgers right now. Vinny 05-24-2015, 08:13 PM Didn't think I'd ever reach the point of grill fatigue, but I'm there, you guys. So short on new ideas, I'm resorting to johnsonville brat burgers right now. You've gotta think big. Do a whole chicken, butterflied and marinated. Turn the heat down and do a roast or a brisket. Glenn 05-24-2015, 08:19 PM Thanks, but getting tired of chicken, especially with meijer always having boneless chicken breast at the meat counter at $1.98/lb I buy two huge chicken breasts every Sunday for about $4 Vinny 05-24-2015, 08:36 PM There is no comparing boneless skinless chicken breasts to a marinated whole chicken. This is why you fail. MikeMyers 05-24-2015, 08:46 PM The problem with making ribs, it takes a long ass time. I do the Trig method 3-2-1 and its 6 fucking hours of smoking. That means I have to dedicate a day to babysitting my grill and it gets annoying when you can just buy a slab of ribs from one of those local bbq places. Glenn 05-24-2015, 09:21 PM There is no comparing boneless skinless chicken breasts to a marinated whole chicken. This is why you fail. CONDESCENDING JERK ALERT MikeMyers 05-25-2015, 09:01 PM I think I'm going to skip the BBQ next week and just get pizza. |
