DL Sheff and sign Barry Bonds

There would be a lot of similarities to bringing in Bonds as there was with Sheed.

Both bring baggage and a negative public image.

Both haven't/hadn't won a championship prior to coming to the D.

Both would be coming to play for a coach/mentor that they highly respect (Sheed/LB, Bonds/Leyland).

I think the Sheed thing has worked out about as well as it possibly could have, would it be different with Bonds?

One problem might be Sheff's relationship with BB, who knows how that stands currently?

Also, even if they are on decent terms, I'm not sure how Sheff would feel about bringing in another DH to share time with him.

Gary Sheffield (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=4268), who injured his left hand Thursday, will not have to go on the disabled list, according to Detroit Tigers (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=det) manager Jim Leyland.
Sheffield was not in the lineup for Friday afternoon's game against the Chicago White Sox (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=cha), but Leyland said Sheffield should be able to play again after the swelling subsides in his left index finger.

Miguel Cabrera (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7163), scratched from Thursday's lineup because of a strained left quadriceps, was in Friday's lineup as the designated hitter.
Sheffield had torn a tendon in the finger while trying unsuccessfully to stretch a single into a double in the eighth inning of the Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=kan).
After the game, Sheffield told reporters, "It won't straighten out," and that when he returned to the dugout after the injury, he looked at the finger and thought "it looked deformed." He added that there was also a period of time when he had no feeling in the finger.
The tendon tear in Sheffield's finger is near the tip, and should not affect his ability hold the bat, Leyland said.
Leyland said Sheffield will wear a splint when he's not playing for six weeks and wear another kind of padding when he plays.

Curtis Granderson will start taking batting practice tomorrow, the Tigers just announced.

Fernando Rodney is headed to Birmingham, Ala., for a visit Wednesday with Dr. James Andrews.

He was slated to throw another bullpen session today, but apparently things didn't go well. Rodney will travel to Birmingham and see noted specialist Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday.

I got a feeling Rodney's heading for Tommy John surgery, thats usually what happens when players go to see Andrews. It would be the 2nd time Rodney has had Tommy John, which is kind of abnormal.

Anyways, if thats the case, than I would expect Dave to make a move pretty soon. Especially considering the only reason he didn't go out and get a Scott Linebrink-type reliever this year was because he was expecting Rodney to have been healthy.

I won't fault Dave for that assumption, b/c his injury really did come out of nowhere, but I think Dave has to address it ASAP. Bring on Chad Crodero!

An MRI on Placido Polanco's back revealed no major damage, and he could return to the lineup as soon as Tuesday.


So hopefully it was just a "cold weather" excuse-type thing.

By Wednesday we could have our entire lineup as it was meant to be constructed.

Vance Wilson, Joel Zumaya, and Fernando Rodney, each of whom have missed the first third of the Detroit Tigers season, will take a big step forward in their rehabilitation when they play in an extended spring training game in Florida according to the Detroit Free Press.

The three Tigers have not appeared in the majors this season, but this morning's extended spring training game in Kissimmee, Fla., could be a big boost in their attempts to return. How they fare during -- and how they feel after -- today's game will determine the next step in their respective programs. Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said Wilson has been able to catch and throw, an encouraging sign in his return from reconstructive elbow surgery.
The players aren't likely to begin minor-league rehabilitation assignments until team officials are fairly certain that they will return within the allotted 30-day window.

1B Miguel Cabrera left the game in the third inning Monday night with a left hip flexor strain. Cabrera may have strained the muscle trying to get a throw that clanked off the heel of his glove in the second for an error. He was listed as day-to-day but manager Jim Leyland is typically cautious with leg injuries and may not try to get Cabrera back until Wednesday afternoon.

It has been almost one month since the Tigers sent Dontrelle Willis to Class A Lakeland to work on his control.

Willis has appeared in only one game there, against Daytona nine days ago. He allowed one earned run -- on one hit and three walks -- in two innings.

It's not known when he will be healthy enough to pitch again.

Willis was scheduled to return to Detroit early this week to have his right knee examined, the team said Monday. That is the same knee he hyperextended in April, forcing him onto the disabled list for the first time in his big-league career.

The setback reduces the chance Willis will pitch again in the majors this season.

Left-hander Willis, 26, has had a turbulent first season with the Tigers, after arriving in a trade with the Florida Marlins and signing a three-year, $29-million contract extension.

He is 0-1 with a 10.32 ERA in the big leagues this season. He was sent to Lakeland after allowing eight earned runs in a June 9 start against Cleveland.

I wonder if Zumaya will ever be dependable again, healthwise?

We'll get a good look next season, after he's had a whole summer to rest and not worry about rehabing. Until then I think he'll be in and out of the pen with various sore arm ailments.

Tigers' Zumaya: 'I felt like my arm exploded'

DETROIT -- Wednesday's news was both disturbing and encouraging for Joel Zumaya and the Tigers as the 24-year-old reliever was placed on the 15-day disabled list after tearing scar tissue in his right (throwing) shoulder during Tuesday night's game at Comerica Park.

"Great news," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "No problem with the rotator cuff, or elbow, or shoulder. "That's a great relief for Joel."

Zumaya had not been as encouraged when he left Tuesday's game, a 6-4 loss to the Blue Jays, after he faced five batters and all five reached base.

"I felt like my arm exploded," Zumaya said of the fastball he threw for his final pitch before being removed by Leyland. "I blew a big chunk of it (scar tissue).

"I thought my career was over. I was trying to be a hero. I could have ended my career."

In words that echoed another recovering player, Gary Sheffield, who spoke Wednesday of his in-and-out pain and setbacks in 2008, Zumaya said he had not felt right since a pitch he threw that was hit for a home run in Baltimore on July 19.

Zumaya, though, said he believed he should pitch through the discomfort in a bid to help his team get back into contention.

When he left the mound Tuesday night, Zumaya was booed by Comerica Park's fans.

"I think it's pretty lame," Zumaya said. "I give it everything I've got."
