View Full Version : 7 States consider lowering drinking age...
Tahoe 04-03-2008, 07:49 PM A couple of them are only doing it for peeps in the military, other states want it changed to 18 for everyone.
I heard one guys say, 'having the drinking age at 21 saves lives" You god damn right it does. And having it at 25 would save more, put at 31 and you'd save more lives. Thats not the issue for me. Its kids can go defend the country, vote, etc, they can have a beer.
I'd love to have a beer with the boy, but hes 18.
If my boy was over in Iraq or anywhere else fighting for this country, I'd want to have a beer with him, if thats what he wanted too that is.
Black Dynamite 04-03-2008, 07:54 PM yes because having a beer is proof of manhood. Only in America!!

Timone 04-03-2008, 07:57 PM Tahoe, you drink?
Timone 04-03-2008, 07:57 PM Tahoe, you drink?
pkshhh!
Tahoe 04-03-2008, 07:58 PM Not since March 24th.
It sucks waking up thinking, this is the best I'm gonna feel all day.
Uncle Mxy 04-03-2008, 08:44 PM Its kids can go defend the country, vote, etc, they can have a beer.
I agree completely.
The key question is -- what's the auto insurance companies' take? If they don't like it, they threaten to spread rate increases for all ages and it's dead in the water. If they like it, how much will they screw non-drinking 18-20 year olds?
b-diddy 04-03-2008, 10:48 PM kids of all ages already can drink. just not legally. same with smoking pot.
i have no problem with the limit of 21. i dont really want these young ones at the bar with me anyway.
how bout we raise the age minimum for military service instead?
Zekyl 04-04-2008, 11:09 AM i dont really want these young ones at the bar with me anyway.
:cogent:
There are already enough idiots at the bar. That's why I rarely go.
MoTown 04-04-2008, 12:09 PM I'm 25 and get annoyed with 21 year olds when I make it out to the bar. Having 18 year old college freshmen at the bar would just make it unbearable for me.
I guess unless it's lowered to 18 for just the females. Then I'm fine with it.
Apologies to the male posters that fit in that 18-21 range - it's not you, it's your horny idiot colleagues.
Zekyl 04-04-2008, 12:28 PM Don't lie, MoTown. Its them.
Tahoe 04-04-2008, 12:31 PM So let the 18 yos ack a foo with the rest of the bar goers.
Either that or raise the age for voting and ability to serve at 22. No alcohol at college campuses anywhere. That'll get the youngsters out to vote.
btw...y'all need to work that young adolescent craziness to your advantage with the ladies. Theres always one chickie that isn't into high fiving every other second.
btw2...the drinking age was 18 when I was in HS in Michigan.
Big Swami 04-04-2008, 01:40 PM It's funny - when you go to southern Europe, one of the things they absolutely hate is the fact that Americans come there to get drunk, and then they start shouting and clowning around. Spanish people are usually really nice to Americans, but they can't understand why alcohol is such a big deal to us. They've been drinking wine at home with mom and dad since they were 12 years old. It doesn't really excite them unless they're presented with some really extraordinary drink, like a rare wine or something, or maybe if it's a special occasion. They'd much rather smoke hash if they want to catch a buzz.

Nice post, sorta bukdowesque.
Big Swami 04-04-2008, 01:45 PM It's true, though. If you could get hash that will make you go completely nonlinear, for the prices that they get it in Spain, why in the hell would you fuck with the 40 oz?

Cogent.
But i say fuck you 18-21 year posters. LOL Your young asses gotta wait, get the fuck over it. As far as military goes, raise the age requirement for military if its an issue, you dont lower the drinking age. Backwards ass people in this country kill me.
Black Dynamite 04-04-2008, 01:48 PM So let the 18 yos ack a foo with the rest of the bar goers.
WTF did you say?
Glenn 04-04-2008, 01:49 PM We need to coin a phrase for Tahoe's shorthand.
Big Swami 04-04-2008, 01:55 PM What matter is it to me, or any of us forsooth, if an 18-year-old young person should wish to act the prat in the same manner as the others visiting the public house?
EDIT: I'm just going to throw my hat into the ring with "abbrevi-ahoe."
Tahoe 04-04-2008, 02:11 PM Ack a foo? Acting like a fool, if that was a serious question.

This is 100% on the mark. Getting hash here is like getting bread. In any area with some bars at night there are always people sitting on benches rolling joints. Hell, in the fiestas de Gracia (a neighborhood party here in Barcelona in August) I always see at least one table with hippies selling brownies on the street.
Actually Spain is tops or near the top in drug use in Europe (and that means all drugs, coke use is big here and even on the rise).
I would say that teenage alcohol abuse here is a bit higher than it was years ago. Now teens do something they call "botellón". They go to the supermarket, buy tons of alocohol and 2 liters of coke and find some square where they get plastered until the dance clubs start filling up around 2. Some of these are HUGE.
The other thing about Spain and drinking is that age groups have their bars really (obviously these aren't rules or anything, just more what happens). The 18-20 year olds tend to go for the enormous dance clubs all the time. The 23-40 crowd goes to bars first and then will hit clubs and after hour clubs (which really start around 5 or 6 in the morning) if they still want to keep gong. I don't usually have the problem you guys mentioned of having to deal with moron 18 year olds when I'm at a bar with friends.
EDIT: Alcohol here is incedibly cheap too compared to the rest of Europe. Another reason so many Brits and Germans come over to get sloshed (one of many).
Tahoe 04-04-2008, 06:40 PM My buddy visits Spain quite a bit and he says it really changed after the Olympics.
OT...I wonder where Hash comes from now. Lebanon had the market cornered for years, till the US made a deal with them. We give you money if you burn the fields. They burnt the fields, we didn't pay them.
From what I understand (news reports and a cop ex-girlfriend) the hash here comes from northern Africa, especially Morroco. When I was there it was everywhere. In the 80s Spaniards even had an expression for going to Morroco to get hash "bajarse al moro". In fact there's a comedy about it starring Antonio Banderas.
EDIT: In fact a few years ago there was this great story on the news about a bunch of guys from southern Spain who wanted to go down to Morroco and buy as much hash as they could. They hatched up a great plan where they started a soccer team and then got in touch with some local morrocan team to play some exhibition games. Down there they bought tons of hash and stored it in gym bags, water bottles and even in soccer balls. Since they were drving a bus down there from their village they didn't think they would get pulled over and searched. They did, of course.
Tahoe 04-04-2008, 07:11 PM thx.
OT...De Ex, Did you ever see 'The Spanish Apartment? Erasmus students and stuff.
No, actually I'd never heard of it until now? Just read it takes place in Barcelona. Any good?
And all my friends here would agree with your friend that the Olympics really changed the city. I didn't come here until 94 though.
Tahoe 04-04-2008, 07:29 PM I liked it. I love foreign flics. Thats about all I watch.
Big Swami 04-04-2008, 11:58 PM Hash is pretty easily available in most of Western Europe. You can get it pretty easily in any big European metropolis. They say it comes from Morocco, but I have a pretty good feeling that a lot of it comes out of Afghanistan, like opium.
It's a shame to hear about the cocaine use, though. Cokeheads suck donkey dick. I'd much rather have hash dealers on every block than cokesuckers. No one ever smoked way too much hash and then smashed all the windows out of my car because I looked at them wrong.
Cocaine has always been prevelant here in Spain. I have a friend our age (I'm 35 and I think a lot of guys here are close to my age) and a friend who's 50 and they both have said that coke is always a big drug here. In fact there was (maybe still is) what was called "la ruta" between Valencia and Madrid which was just a highway filled with dance clubs where peopel would hop going form one city to another and cocaine was big there to keep them going all night. It's big here but not everywhere you go is it big, there are a ton of bars and areas where it's not a factor. And I would say that since the night out in Spain is relatively violence free you don't see much of that type of an effect though it definitely is there.
Big Swami 04-05-2008, 09:53 AM Naw man, I'm not saying that people using cocaine automatically equals violence. I'm just saying that it automatically means "acting like a self-involved pushy asshole."
Ahhh. You're right there.
