Spitzer meeting with aides over report, paper reports

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Times is reporting that New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has told senior advisers that he had been involved in a prostitution ring.

On its Web site, the newspaper cites an anonymous administration official as the source and says Spitzer was meeting with his top aides.

Spitzer officials wouldn't immediately comment on the story to The Associated Press. An announcement was scheduled for 2:15 p.m. at his Manhattan office.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The New York Times is reporting that Governor Eliot Spitzer has told senior advisers that he has ties to a prostitution ring.

Eyewitness News is told Spitzer will make an announcement Monday afternoon.

Spitzer officials wouldn't immediately comment on the story. Spitzer, 48, is married and has three daughters.

Details about the prostitution ring were not immediately clear, but last week federal prosecutors in Manhattan filed conspiracy charges against four people accusing them of running a prostitution ring that charged wealthy clients in Europe and the U.S. thousands of dollars for prostitutes.

The Times reported that a person with knowledge of the governor's role believes the governor is identified as a client in court papers.

The Web site of the Emperors Club VIP displays photographs of the prostitutes' bodies, with their faces hidden, along with hourly rates depending on whether the prostitutes were rated with one diamond, the lowest ranking, or seven diamonds, the highest. The most highly ranked prostitutes cost $5,500 an hour, prosecutors said.

Spitzer has built his political legacy on rooting out corruption. He made headlines battling Wall Street while serving as attorney general.

He won an historic share of the vote for governor in 2006, and took office vowing to continue his no-nonsense approach to fixing one of the nation's worst governments.

His time as governor has been marred by several problems, though, including an unpopular plan to grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants and a plot by his aides to smear Spitzer's main Republican nemesis.

In 2004, he was part of an investigation of an escort service in New York City that resulted in the arrest of 18 people on charges of promoting prostitution and related charges.

The phrasing used in the news reports is kind of weird. They all say "is involved in" or "has ties to" which to me implies more than just a client but someone that's actually part of the organization in some way.

Then you get down to the details and it says just a client.

Four people allegedly connected to the high-end ring were arrested last week.

No way. Government prosecutors aren't liberal, almost by definition. Liberals are FIGHTING the man, without the dichotomy of BEING the man. He'd done a great job as attorney general, and most people gained from his taking it to Wall Street institutions. But he's been a big letdown as NY governor. At the rate he was falling, Bloomberg was gonna take him out in 2010 if he wanted to. The Peter Principle was gonna get him in one form or another.

Dude set up shell companies to move money around to hide what he was spending on prostitutes and in the process sent up every red flag in the world that he was involved in some kind of major political corruption.

The murky parts are:

1) Why the IRS would care about thousands in cash? Bribes? Fuck, Spitzer's loaded, financially. His family business is Manhattan real estate, and they're just a hair south of being in the billionaire range. The man can use thousands of dollars as toilet paper, and judging from how much he overpaid for Kristen's services, it seems he did. If he'd been doing this for a long time, it'd have been part of his normal transactional history since he's been governor.

2) Was he really stupid enough to do an EFT or the like from his accounts to the shell corporations? Of ALL people, I'd expect him to know how stupid this is. I have a hard time believing it was a case of the little brain trumping the big brain, but I don't have enough details to be sure. Everything I've read suggests that he dealt in cash only. If that's true, then either they physically tailed him, OR they already were tipped about the prostitution.

An investigation of "why was a few grand withdrawn here and there" typically ENDS with "oh, he's in the hundred millon dollar trust fund baby club". That's all I'm saying. Judging from the "structuring" charges the media is talking about, the magnitude of dollars wasn't big by "rich dude" standards... probably under $50-100k in total as of the start of the investigation. It'd be like a regular guy withdrawing $500 from an ATM in $100 increments over time. Sure, he may be using it to pay for his $200/hour hookers, but those dollar amounts for normal people just aren't a big deal. And Spitzer, of all people, would've known what triggers bank investigations.

Not that I condone the governor's behavior, but why is prostitution illegal? Afterall, it is sex between two consenting adults. This is also a capitalistic society where you can sell anything you legally own as long as someone is willing to pay for it. So why is it outlawed? I can understand censorship of it (keeping it off the streets, out of the media, etc), but the rest doesn't really make sense to me. I don't think it's the act of paying for sex that people object to (after all some dates are essentially that), but a fear of if being legal allowing it to be more widespread and in the open.

well, that is a media/parenting/exposure problem. kids aren't supposed to watch R movies or drink beer. Should we outlaw that as well? Spitzer last year had wanted to wire transfer more than $10,000 from his branch to what turned out to be the front for the prostitution ring, QAT Consulting Group, which also uses a number of other names, in New Jersey, the sources said.

But Spitzer had the money broken down into several smaller amounts of less than $10,000 each, apparently to avoid federal regulations requiring the reporting of the transfer of $10,000 or more, the sources said. The regulations aim to help spot possible illegal business activities, such as fraud or drug deals.

Apparently, having second thoughts about even sending the total amount this way, Spitzer then asked that the bank take his name off the wires, the sources said.

Bank officials declined, however, saying that it was improper to do so and in any event, it was too late because the money already had been sent, the sources said.

So, instead of paying in cash, he WIRES money, then TALKS TO THE BANK TO TRY AND BACK OUT?!?! Yeah, that would've raised the red flags I thought he was smart enough not to have raised. Wowzers!

Given his personal wealth, no one would've blinked had he withdrawn cash, or simply diverted profits from a fund into something more readily converted into relatively-small amounts of cash (e.g. precious metals). His actions were key in taking Enron's cronies down, reducing the prices of consumer computer memory, and more money in your retirement accounts by eliminating a few shady financial practices. LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Stop that $1 million check: It turns out the call girl linked to Eliot Spitzer had already shed her clothes for "Girls Gone Wild" as an 18-year-old while partying in Miami, Florida, the video company's founder said Tuesday.

Joe Francis reached out to Ashley Alexandra Dupre, now 22, with an offer of $1 million to appear in a non-nude spread for his company's new magazine, plus a chance to join the "Girls Gone Wild" tour bus, his company announced Tuesday.

But Francis said someone had a revelation at the Tuesday morning staff meeting: Did anyone think to check the archives?

They did, he said -- and there she was.

"It'll save me a million bucks," Francis said Tuesday. "It's kind of like finding a winning lottery ticket in the cushions of your couch."

Francis said at that point, his offer was off the table: "We actually had been dealing with her rep," he said. "Our [offer] was the real deal. We just never made the connection."

He said his employees got to work on pulling the footage and planned to offer it on the Web site by Tuesday evening, with a free sampling on the front page and the rest available with a $29.95 monthly subscription.

According to a "Girls Gone Wild" press release, Dupre visited Miami in 2003 to celebrate her 18th birthday. After fighting with a friend and getting thrown out of her hotel, Dupre found a nearby "Girls Gone Wild" bus, the company said.

She signed legal papers and spent a full week on the bus, filming seven full-length tapes that included nudity and same-sex encounters, according to the company.

"I personally ended up buying her a Greyhound bus ticket back home to North Carolina," Francis said.

Francis returned to California last week after being sentenced to time served and fines in Florida in a case involving filming underage girls. He still faces trial on federal tax evasion charges that carry a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.

Dupre's public profile has skyrocketed since Spitzer, the New York governor, announced his resignation last week amid the prostitution scandal. He was accused of spending tens of thousands of dollars on prostitutes, including a February tryst with a call girl named "Kristen," since identified as Dupre.

Dupre's MySpace page was hit more than 5 million times in the days immediately after the scandal broke. Her musical efforts, including two songs posted at the music sharing site Aime Street, were listened to hundreds of thousands of times and played on national airwaves.

Hustler publisher Larry Flynt told AP Friday that he e-mailed Dupre offering her $1 million to appear nude in his magazine, but didn't sound optimistic that she would settle for that amount. Flynt suggested that by the time Dupre starts talking, she may be too big a media phenomenon for a simple magazine spread.

"She is no doubt going to do a book. There will probably be a movie," he said. "I think she is going to have so many offers coming in that it will probably be wishful thinking just to get in the door."
