Report: Browns trade for Lions DT Rogers

Posted: February 29, 2008
Sporting News staff reports

After an earlier trade fell through, the Detroit Lions on Friday agreed to trade defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to the Cleveland Browns.

In exchange for the two-time Pro Bowl tackle, the Lions would receive a third-round pick and cornerback Leigh Bodden from the Browns.

Earlier on Friday, the Browns agreed to trade Rogers to the Bengals for a third- and fifth-round pick.

A report on ProFootballTalk.com reported the NFL rejected the trade. Another report, on the Cincinnati Enquirer website said the Bengals-Lions deal ran afoul of salary cap rules.

Bodden's a stud man, pair him up with Brian Kelly, with Kenoy, Dwight Smith, and Gerald Alexander at the safetys...suddenly our DB's aren't so bad...

Has the league placed a stupidity cap on trades to prevent millen from trading for a 3rd and 5th round pick when that same player could be traded for a 3rd + a decent corner. Maybe the league is as tired as we are in seeing millen screwing up drafts and wants to limit the number of lions' picks. From my limited info on bodden, he seems better than any corner we've had recently.

I want to see the lions trade for Chad Henne. Anyone who thinks they're going anywehere with Kitna and Stanton, well, good luck with that. Geezus, this team is fucking lost.

Can we get some of the other relevant posts from the traded to Bengals thread moved over?

By the way, I think the Lions should still sign Brian Kelly AND draft a CB on the first day. Make the secondary a position of depth for the team.
Now with 4 1st day picks, they should be OT, DT, MLB and CB.

If Otah is available in the 1st I think they need to make that their pick. If he isn't, Talib or Jenkins would work - Sedrick Ellis if he falls for some reason. Other names I like depending on the round and who slips - DT = Trevor Laws or Pat Sims. Laws seems to fit Marinelli better. MLB = Jerod Mayo or J Leman. OT = Sam Baker or Carl Nicks. CB = Brandon Flowers or Antoine Cason.

For me the perfect draft would be Otah in the 1st, Laws in the 2nd, and Cason and Leman in the 3rd. It may be wishful thinking to manage Cason with our first pick in the third. We may have to package a 4th or 5th to move up and get him. I think the other three are reasonable to think they could be available at our draft positions.

I agree. Brian Kelly would be a good one or two year veteran to plug in as we search for a younger guy to take that role in a couple years. I wouldn't go CB in the first round, but I would love if we could get a guy like Antoine Cason or Justin King in the 2nd or 3rd Rounds...

I'm not a big fan of Jeff Otah. Everything I've read about him suggests that he's a project offensive tackle. He started playing football his senior year in high school, and from what I've read, it would be best if he went to a team that has a lot of patience. So given that brief scouting report, I'd much rather hold off and get a guy who is a little more polished and can contribute day one...perhaps Chris Williams from Vandy or Ryan Clady from Boise St (although I doubt Clady lasts to 15)...

Even a guy like Sam Baker, even though I think he's actually a guard (not positive), would be fine with me.

I wouldn't mind a RB either. Jonathan Stewart maybe???

I wish this organization knew how to properly sign free agents. That way we'd be able to better address needs for the draft. But Millen can't even pick his nose, let alone pick the right players to bring in here...

Yeah, Otah only projects as a RT anyway. If we're spending a first on a OT, I would at least want him to compete with Backus if he ends up being better.

We have to get a MLB in the second round IMO. I wouldn't mind a DT in the first as long as we're not reaching, or another CB.

Not too sure about this trade. The pick is nice, but we picked up a DB that was a part of one of the worst defenses in the NFL. I'm a little skeptical.

True, but he was one of their brightest spots. Led them in INT's and passes defended, 3rd in tackles.
His stats also reflect that he's improving, while Rogers may very well be regressing. At least it seems you know what you'll get each game from Bodden. Never the case with Rogers.

1st Round- We've already addressed CB, and I think given where we are picking, it may be too high to take a MLB. Perhaps a RB??? Mendenhall or Jonathan Stewart would be fine with me. If Chris Williams from Vandy is on the board, than I'll take him over both RB's...No Jeff Otah though.

2nd Round- Sam Baker, Carl Nicks, Gosder Cherilus if we don't get a linemen in the first round. Or, if we do get a OL in the first rd, we should get a LB in the 2nd round, perhaps Jerod Mayo, Curtis Lofton, or Jordon Dizon

3rd Round- I doubt he'll be available by the time we pick in the 3rd round, but I really want Antoine Cason, CB from Arizona...for some reason he's not projected to be a 1st round pick, but when I watched him play this year, the guy was a flat out super stud...

He was 5th in the NFL in INTs. I didn't watch any Browns games, but typically if the rest of the defense is bad (I know they've had DL problems for years) you can simply avoid a solid CB. Run the ball more and pick on the weak corners. It's like having a baseball lineup with one good hitter. Just avoid the guy and burn everyone else.
