Big deal for big man

A NFL source confirmed Friday the Bengals have swung one of their biggest deal in history by acquiring Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers for a third- and fifth-round pick.

How sad is that? (the bold part)

What a waste. 3rd and 5th are crap. It's possible I hate Millen even more than I hate bukdow. In fact, I guarantee I hate Millen more, since he actually has an influence on something I would otherwise enjoy. bukdow is just fodder.

Looking further into it, their 3rd round pick should be somewhere around 72-73 or so.
With this team, that pick should become an instant starter. Never, ever with the same impact Rogers had, but a starter nonetheless.

Wow, what a deal.

Retarded. More picks for Millen to f up...

As a Lions fan, I can only hope the guy we get to replace Shaun Rogers is just as talented as him. Whether he was half-assing it on the field or not, he was our best player, and no matter what, he still commanded a double team.

Pisses me off we couldn't get more for him. Now we're stuck with Cory Redding and Langston Moore...and Paris Lenon up the middle...what a joke

I often ask myself.....

If Millen somehow dealt 1/2 the team and all the 2nd day picks, along with future picks, and managed to get 15 first round picks - is it likely that 13 of the 15 would be busts?

Maybe I'm missing something, but why is this a bad trade?

It sounds like they would have been willing to cut him if they couldn't trade him, and that would have resulted in a bunch of dead cap $.

Now, they not only get some picks that will probbaly be roster players (maybe just special teams, but on the roster at least, something that Rogers wasn't going to be) but they have moved Rogers salary off the books.

Sounds pretty good to me (that is, unless, as I said, I'm missing something).

Kudos to Millen!

This just might be his year to win Executive of the Year.

if I were matt millen, i would trade the 3rd and next year's 6th round pick to move up to the 67th slot. i would then trade the 5th and this year's 2nd to a team that had 2 4th round draft picks and that team's 3rd round draft pick.

i would then use the higher of that team's 4th round draft picks and our 1st round draft pick to trade down for the 19th pick in the first round and also a 4th round draft pick next year.

then, i would trade my 7th round pick, my 6th round pick, and that 2nd 4th round pick I made with that 2nd trade to trade up to either a late 3rd round pick or earlier 4th round pick.

to really make it look like i knew what I was doing, I would do all this during the draft so it made it look like i was targetting all these players and was out maneuvering every gm in the league.

Not so fast, Charles Schwab breath! The News is reporting that this deal is unraveling!

Glenn, you ask why this was a bad deal and point to the fact they were going to cut Rogers. Based on that, good deal though it certainly seemed they could have gotten more. But to really find out this was a bad move, you have to look at the original willingness to cut the best defensive player on a bad defensive team.
Subtraction by subtraction.

Lions get Bodden and third-rounder

by Tom Kowalski Friday February 29, 2008, 9:38 PM

It has not been confirmed yet, but a league source said the Lions are very close to finalizing a deal that will send Shaun Rogers to the Cleveland Browns for veteran cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round draft pick.
Details are still sketchy, but the original trade that sent Rogers to the Cincinnati Bengals for a third- and fifth-round pick did not go through.
For severals days prior to Friday, the Browns had been the most interested in dealing for Rogers. Bodden had been mentioned as part of the deal. With veteran free agent cornerbacks Brian Kelly and Drayton Florence both looking for high-dollar contracts, the Lions wanted to land a veteran cornerback in a deal for Rogers.

I like that deal MUCH better. Bodden is solid. He had an off-field issue with a cop at the airport, so he may not fit the "character" profile the team is supposedly looking for, but he's a young starting corner with good size and he's matched up favorably with some dang good WR's in the past. 6 INT's last year had him tied for 5th in the league. So to get THAT and a 3rd, instead of a 5th and a 3rd is a massive upgrade. Who knew Millen could potentially redeem himself this well? It still leaves us thing in the trenches, but I will absolutely take it. I could see them using the 3rd rounder to go after a guy like Trevor Laws from ND. Replaces Rogers with a guy who may not be able to fill the shoes but had the work ethic and attitude Marinelli loves. I still think the ideal 1st day draft would include Otah, Leman, a guy like Laws and the best corner available in the 2nd (depending on where Leman projects).

Rogers and the Browns agreed to a six-year, $42 million deal on Wednesday, a restructuring that will keep him in Cleveland until 2013. With his existing contract scheduled to expire in 2010, three years and a guaranteed $20 million were added to make the deal work.
Under terms of the new contract, Rogers will make $23 million over the first three years.
