This, despite the massive costs incurred with providing state of the art Playstation 3 technology at an affordable price that includes the Cell microprocessor, Blu-Ray, a standard hard-drive, and free online play with dedicated servers.

Sony is no stranger to reporting profits; before the Playstation 3 was released Sony had dominated the videogame business for years. However, with the costly inclusion of Cell and Blu-Ray, Sony lost money on their videogame division last year on behalf of their love for gamers by providing a machine that is unrivaled at a price that could be afforded by mainstream consumers. Below are the figures reported for Q3:

Yes and no. In that I mean that that M$ sold their share of units, but at the same time took much longer to turn their "cheaper system" over into profits. With that said its not the greatest accomplishment ever, but a vast improvement and the fact that Sony found ways to improve revenue in spite of the price drop is pretty good on their part. From a profit standpoint they cover even more ground because of the red rings debacle. Again it puts them in a spot where they can decent momentum push in 2008. But alot of that now falls on their software.

More lead time usually helps consoles outsell rivals. Only when one console is at the end of its life-cycle (read as: out of date technology) does the "out before" work against the console.

However, I would imagine most of the PS3's sales are still from riding its good name from the PSX and PS2 as 3 hasn't really showcased itself as above and beyond the 360 IMO.

I read that PS3 has had some titles pass on it because of difficulties adapting to their system. What sort of game titles might be missing because of this? I'm the type of gamer that has a half dozen titles (regardless of era/system) that I play and buy every few years and generally don't play many games besides those:

1) First person shooter (Bond/Halo/Unreal/COD,etc)
2) Madden
3) Tiger Woods
4) NHL
5) NBA
6) NCAAF

I pretty much always get that stuff on whatever system. My Wii is a little different of course.

Yeah, you'll get all those on PS3. For FPS, you'll have Call of Duty, Resistance, eventually Killzone 2 and Resistance 2. As far as what's missing that's on Xbox 360, I'm not really sure, nothing's really sticking out at me at the moment. I'd have to think awhile.

What's your favorite FPS? It has to be one that is multiplayer on the system itself, even though I'll do online as well. Right now I play Battlefront (on the system) and Halo 2 (system and online) for the Xbox. I love COD, but the lack of multiplayer outside online keeps me from buying that. I've never loved Halo either. It's pretty cool, but not as fun as Goldeneye was when that first came out years ago.

Sports wise the one stand out is imo MLB the Show, its the best baseball game outh there imo and its made by Sony.

As far as FPS, i can only play so many, not a very big fan. But Resistance holds its own. As a Co-Op game its one of the best action FPS co-ops out there imo. The online setup is fully built around most games being hosted by Insomniac so lag really isnt an issue in a general match at any point.

Another solid Co-Op is warhawk, features online(not campaign, but in the online battles) split screen up 4 people.

For you none outside of MLB the show. If you give a damn about variety i'd say Uncharted(one of the best games i've played personally) and Heavenly sword almost immediately come to mind. But in the end your preference dictates your purchase. If you truly look towards playing shooters as a priority, you have the preferred system for that. With that said PS3 shooters hold their own this time(unlike the slow ps2 shooters that couldnt match first xbox shooters last gen) so you dont lose out if you decide to go PS3.

Well Haze will feature full multiplayer options and Resistence part 2 will probably as a multiplayer game will give a big time effort at pushing the online and multiplayer setup farther than any other FPS has tried. Again I dont believe in selling someone on a system. I believe these days you find out on your own what its all about(dont ever trust a salesperson on buying games) and purchase based on that. IMO PS3 sells itself if you read up on it, or it may not fit your style. Either way I think that if you're truly only into FPS and sports, you'll be fine with what you have.

Actually there's offline multiplayer deathmatches on COD4. Atleast there was on my PS3 version. I'll double check my brothers xbox version but they should be close to identical games(outside of minor details being added to the graphics on the ps3 version).

Actually Sony is working on feature similar to xbox live in their PSN through their "Home" setup. Otherwise they both connect at the same pace, but the XBL definitely has more features.

I didnt even play Baseball games until 989's MLB took off and eventually became MLB The Show. Its by far the deepest baseball game year after year. 989 Sony never made good sports games for the most part, but they kicked ass in Baseball and Hockey(NHL Faceoff was the only game I played as much as EA NHL)

BTW, regarding NCAA Football 08...I HATED the game with all of the excessive interceptions, but after the patch came out and I found custom sliders that I'm currently using I can not stop playing at all.

No problem, again I think that as a person who is big on FPS you got the best best for having a good supply of those types. But if you are looking more at the blu ray aspect, its probably a good buy for PS3. More so if you are running HDMI(It can upscale DVD in HDMI, but not in Component unfortunately). Its also a fully 2.0 compliant blu ray player too. So you're not getting a second rate add on either. As far as Com goes, I get a sense that he's not pleased about spending 600 on a PS3, I'd be mad about spending 600 on any console personally. Either way I hope that was helpful info also.

PSP to its credit is moving solid units too. I may have to grab another one at some point for that god of war game. May be a fluke as Microsoft says, but that blu ray issue seems to be helping PS3 alot. Giving them time to not rush out these games they got coming in 2008.

You know whats weird, I don't know anybody personally who has a PS3...

So it's odd that it outsold XBOX360...probably b/c most ppl bought 360's in '06...

Nothing wrong with that. Its pretty even with people I come across, but only 2 people I know still have 360's. Everybody else went PS3 this christmas.
