TRAVERSE CITY — A man accused of throwing the cup that sparked a 2004 brawl between Indiana Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans at the Palace of Auburn Hills has been sentenced to jail for drunken driving.
John Green, 42, of West Bloomfield Township pleaded guilty and was senteneced Jan. 8 to 45 days in jail and two years of probation.
He entered the plea in Grand Traverse County District Court to second-offense driving under the influence, which prosecutors reduced from an initial charge of third-offense driving under the influence.
Green also pleaded guilty to driving with a suspended license and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.
Judge Michael Haley gave Green credit for two days served in jail and allowed him to serve the remainder in Oakland County, where he lives. The judge ordered Green to pay $1,666 in fines and costs.
Green was accused of sparking the Palace brawl by throwing a cup at Ron Artest, then a player for the Pacers, during a Pistons home game Nov. 19, 2004. Artest charged into the stands, and the resulting melee resulted in suspensions for several players.
Green was acquitted of throwing the cup, but was convicted in March 2006 of assault and battery for punching Artest and sentenced to 30 days in jail.
He was charged last September with drunken driving after sheriff’s deputies pulled him off U.S.-31 in Grand Traverse County.
