View Full Version : Should the Pistons try to acquire Zach Randolph?
Glenn 01-19-2008, 10:00 AM The Knicks are trying to move him because he's a bad fit with Eddy Curry (as most would be).
ZBo can rebound and score in the paint, which is what many of us think is the main weakness for the Pistons. I see his game as being sort of similar to Elton Brand's.
He's got a bad contract, he's got some attitude issues, and he has some history with Rasheed.
Do the Pistons need a shake up enough to consider something like this?
Randolph's contract
07/08 13,333,333
08/09 14,666,667
09/10 16,000,000
10/11 17,333,333
Another problem is that it would probably put us at risk of losing Rip when he opts out, unless Rip goes to NY, that is.
Obviously, we'd have to feel comfortable putting Stuckey into the starting lineup in Rip's place. Then we'd have a hole at back up PG (assuming that Murray and Hunter aren't ideal or aren't NY-bound). So maybe NY includes Nate Robinson too? Another option would be to move Tayshaun and Brezec for ZBo and then start Hayes or Herrmann at SF, they could even sign Webber with the extra roster spot. I think we'd need a future first round pick from the Knicks as well, at least.
Just thinking out loud here, I'm not so much looking for everyone to propose pretend trades, that's what the "Fun with trade ideas" forum is for, but I was just wondering if anyone here thinks that Randolph's game is a match for what this Pistons team needs, since he's obviously available.
defrocked 01-19-2008, 10:14 AM I'd love to give a lengthy analysis weighing the pros and cons, but I'm heading out and the answer is NO!
b-diddy 01-19-2008, 10:45 AM zach randolph and nate robinson are two guys no one wants to play with.
they both have talent, but they both have almost no basketball IQ. joe has made it a habit of avoiding these guys (while zeke has made it a habit of collecting them).
i think this would be a desperation type trade that joe would only consider if we got a windfall in talent back.
Jethro34 01-19-2008, 10:52 AM I want to be the voice of opposition and say yes, but I would want to do it without really giving anything up. I mean, I would want to do it with Flip, Brezec, Hermann and any exceptions we have, but that's not enough. How long until we can deal PB and WH anyhow?
DrRay11 01-19-2008, 10:57 AM I agree with Jethro. I think it could work out, but I wouldn't give up anything except those guys.
b-diddy 01-19-2008, 11:17 AM portland trades the dude after he had an mvp stat type number last year, and they get better. that should be awfully telling about how much this guy helps his team win.
if the team completely falls off, i would consider an offer to the knicks of
mcdyess
amir
and then anothe contract, either an expiring or even arran afflalo, to make the K's match.
Jethro34 01-19-2008, 11:50 AM Based on all that, I don't see why the Knicks would do it. Zeke isn't an addition by subtraction guy, which is why headcases always end up in NY. He wouldn't care about the cap relief. He would only do it if he actually felt he could get production on the court from the guys. Who knows, maybe he would like the guys. Flip seems like a Knicks type guy. If they had Flip they could certainly move Q-Rich. In fact, with Flip and Hermann they could use Crawford more at point and cut Marbury. Brezec would probably get good run as a 4th or 5th big, with Lee being the starting PF.
Sadly, the deal would actually make a ton of sense for NY. While Marbury, Richardson and Randolph are big name players, getting rid of them and giving more run to younger players that aren't headcases.
In the long run - like two years down the road, the Knicks would have a MUCH more cap friendly situation with a developed young nucleus instead of trying too hard to live off of has-beens.
Meanwhile, the Pistons would shorten their bench but fill it with people designed for extended PT. Max is getting tired. Randolph could come in right now and take 18 minutes per game. It would be a guy who will bump inside and be a stronger force - our biggest weakness.
By cutting out Flip and Hermann we take out one more obstacle to getting PT for Afflalo and Lindsey. We want rested guys, but we don't want rusty guys.
If attitude is a concern, forget about that. If I was always on a losing team I would have a bad attitude as well. He was just coming into his own as the Blazers were starting their slide. Winning cures a lot.
3 biggest reasons this would never happen:
1 - salary issues for the Pistons wouldn't get Davidson's rubber stamp
2 - Zeke would never actually do what was best for his team in the long run
3 - the numbers simply don't work and it would take giving up a rotation player to make it work, I think.
Glenn 01-19-2008, 11:55 AM Hey, that's a great post!
Jethro34 01-19-2008, 12:35 PM And to think I'm gunshy about posting in the NBA forum because I'm not sure my talent level is sufficient.
Glenn 01-19-2008, 12:58 PM Lose the gunshyness, man. Nobody's judging worthiness, we're just talking hoops.
Hermy 01-19-2008, 12:59 PM I'll be a dick if you post something stupid.
Atticus771 01-19-2008, 04:04 PM I'm not so sure about Randolph. I don't know exactly why, but I've always been a bit gunshy (using the word of the day) with trades. The only trade I can remember supporting in the last handful of years was the Rasheed trade; I felt like a giddy school girl when that went down.
Oh, and the Nazr trade obviously is the exception to what I said above. I was glad to see him leave.
BTW, I've always loved your sig, Hermy. Hilarious.
Wilfredo Ledezma 01-19-2008, 04:40 PM Although a player like Randolph with what he can bring to the table, would be a perfect fit to fill our needs, I don't think I would want to take on that contract.
Black Dynamite 01-19-2008, 06:02 PM That contract is ridiculous. No thanks.
As a player I'd love to have him but that contract again is lame.
Timone 01-19-2008, 06:30 PM Fuck no, bro.
