D's Nuts 01-03-2008, 02:00 PM In an ode to our other threads I thought I would start something along these lines. My New Years resolution is to read a book a month.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I prefer non-fiction so I at least learn something and gain knowledge. Also books on war, strategy, history, stuff like that would intrigue me as well.
The last book I read was called "A Warrior Elite" and it was about a man who went through the Navy SEALS training like 40 years ago and then went back to see others do it in present time. Pretty interesting.
Timone 01-03-2008, 02:02 PM I'm with you on preferring non-fiction.
I'm in the middle of "The Reason Why" its the biographical-history on what lead to the disasterous charge of the light brigade in the Alfred Lord Tenison poem (Cannons to the left of them. Cannons to the right of them. Cannons in front of them ...). http://www.amazon.com/Reason-Why-Story-Charge-Brigade/dp/0140012788
I've enjoyed it. Its more sociology and political history though. Not war strategy.
Wilfredo Ledezma 01-03-2008, 02:11 PM I'm reading the book "Married To The Mouse". I bought it on Amazon about 2 years ago, it talks about the inner-workings on Disney World. And the agreements and perks the city of Orlando granted Disney to stay in Florida.
Pretty interesting stuff, Disney can pretty much call it's own shots, make it's own demands, and operate any way they want. And with the money they bring to the city of Orlando, theres nothing they (the city) can do about it.
Disney is pretty much it's own country.
WTFchris 01-03-2008, 02:32 PM I enjoy Robert Ludlum's books (think Bourne Identity, etc).
I've read some good WII non-fiction books, but I couldn't tell you their names now.
Right now I am reading the Chamber (John Grisham). I've also read the Last Juror and the Broker by him. I like his novels.

I've been reading "Cash" for about 6 years now.
That's what having a bunch of kids will do for your free time, Swami.

Glenn 01-03-2008, 02:43 PM I also just acquired a copy of the 1994-95 Official CBA Guide and Register, titled "League of Dreams".
This is pre-Isiah, of course.

The Light and Heavy Brigades of the British Crimean War are national military heroes, like the ANZACs are to the Australians and the Green Berets to the US. But the Light Brigade were a bunch of saps who were foolishly ordered into an unwinnable battle by clueless upper-crusters. You'd think a group of guys who won a battle or something would be the heroes, instead of a bunch of guys who got fragged in record time.
Speaking of the ANZACs: Hahden the fack up yeh poofters!

b-diddy 01-03-2008, 04:52 PM im reading "iv" by chuck klosterman. actually, im not really reading anything. i read about 200 pgs of it in one sitting, but may never pick it up again. i also have to finish up the last 50 or so pages of 'a tale of two cities', that i would like to finish, but havent touched in months.
there is a ton of non fiction i want to read. stuff on financials and trading, other thinks just for interest, and also i got romeo and juliet (pretty much the only main shakespeare i havent read). one of my goals this year is to actually read more than once every 6 months.
Timone 01-03-2008, 04:55 PM I started reading "The Rasputin File", which is about 500 pages or so, last year. I'm on page 250 or so.

I thought you said you weren't a christian in the birthday thread!
D's - you'd probably love Steven Ambrose stuff. I have a buddy who was a huge military history nut and he read all of Ambrose's stuff. He couldn't get enough of it.
DrRay11 01-03-2008, 10:33 PM I have never read much nonfiction... As far as fiction goes, I have a book called "The Closers" by Michael Connelly laying around that I need to start.
I'm interested in reading some nonfiction stuff about metaphysics and stuff...
As far as reading goes in general, I'm thinking about dropping video games and taking up more reading. Reading is a good and enjoyable way to pass time and it is much more fruitful than video games in terms of what it does for the creative part of my brain (which is an important part of me). I don't know yet, though... I just feel like video games, although usually fun, are just totally unproductive.
Zekyl 01-04-2008, 12:20 AM Anyone read Band of Brothers?
A friend read it. He loved it.
And E-Ray, I completely agree on the video games thing. I've been slowly weeding them out of my life. I was doing great until my best friend got me CoD3 for xmas and the ex got me guitar hero 3
Big Swami 01-04-2008, 08:49 AM I'm interested in reading some nonfiction stuff about metaphysics and stuff...
I strongly recommend "Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert Pirsig as a great way to get your feet wet with metaphysics. It's chock full of ideas.
D's Nuts 01-04-2008, 03:14 PM Im going to start with Band of Brothers and see where it goes from there. I am actually going to a LIBRARY tomorrow and checking out books. Good thing its not like church where I feel if I haven't gone in a while I might get struck down when I enter.
Timone 01-06-2008, 07:11 PM The entire "Does Harbaugh have an axe to grind?" thread.
Zekyl 01-06-2008, 08:58 PM I didn't even know that thread existed.
Timone 01-06-2008, 08:59 PM You'll find some real gems if you go deep in the NCAA forum.
DrRay11 01-24-2008, 11:08 AM Finished "The Closers." It was pretty solid...
Probably next up will be that metaphysics book Swami recommended.
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden.
Read it for a Psych class. I really liked it. Written by a former pscyzophrenic about her time in the nut house.
Uncle Mxy 08-23-2009, 02:00 PM At this exact moment, I'm reading some valuable advice:

As far as books, I'm just getting into Spook by Mary Roach, an entertaining look at scientific research into the afterlife.
