Well, I didn't know where to put this, but I just read it's been confirmed the Suns are going to play a game outdoors in the preseason.

Outdoors where? Like on a street court?

That'd be funny.

As the NHL prepares to showcase its sport in the open air on Tuesday, the NBA has confirmed the Suns will play a preseason game outdoors next year. The Palm Springs Desert Sun reports the game will be at the famed Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California's Coachella Valley. No word on the opponent, though the Lakers would make too much sense.

Maybe even more than hockey (at least south of the border), basketball is an outdoor game for most kids. We won't get black top and chain nets, but adding the element of Mother Nature will certainly be interesting. The organizers have considered safety nets for the worst weather, though.

[Suns co-owner Richard] Heckmann said the Suns are planning several precautions in the rare case of rainy weather. He could not share all of them on the record, but said the group hired a meteorologist to suggest the best possible day for a rain- and wind-free game.

"We don't want to see if Steve Nash can make a three-pointer in a 30 mph cross wind," he said.

Nets push back planned move to Brooklyn

January 3, 2008

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- The New Jersey Nets will play most or all of the 2009-10 NBA season in New Jersey instead of Brooklyn, a team spokesman said Thursday.

The Nets had planned to play at its new arena in New York starting in 2009. But spokesman Barry Baum said the move to Brooklyn wouldn't happen until sometime in 2010.

The Nets could possibly begin the season at the Izod Center in East Rutherford and move to the new arena, to be called the Barclays Center, in the first half of 2010, Baum said.

In October, Nets principal owner Bruce Ratner told The Associated Press that the new arena probably would not be ready by the start of the 2009-2010 season.

Under terms of their contract with the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which operates the Izod Center, the Nets have to give 18 months' notice before they leave to avoid paying a penalty, Baum said.

The Nets haven't broken ground on the new arena, which is part of the Atlantic Yards development that is also set to include office space and as many as 6,400 new apartments. The $4 billion project has faced legal challenges from local residents and environmental groups.

NEW YORK, Jan. 4, 2008 – Zach Randolph of the New York Knicks has been suspended one game without pay for throwing his headband and hitting an official, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President Basketball Operations.

The incident occurred with 1:47 remaining in the third period of the Knicks 107-97 loss to the Kings on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at Madison Square Garden.

Randolph will serve his suspension tonight when the Knicks visit the San Antonio Spurs at the AT&T Center.

Raptors point guard T.J. Ford said Thursday that he is pain-free and will return to action sometime this season, adding that he will sit down with team officials within the next week or two to discuss his eventual return.

Ford, who suffered an arm stinger after falling during a game on Dec.11 in Atlanta, told The Fan 590 yesterday that retirement had crossed his mind after his latest scare in Atlanta.

Miami Heat center Shaquille O'Neal flew Monday to Los Angeles to seek medical treatment for a hip injury that has sidelined him the past five games.

O'Neal's departure two games into a five-game trip is the latest setback for an injury-plagued team that has the worst record in the Eastern Conference at 8-26 and has lost seven games in a row. O'Neal had said Sunday he had hoped to return to the lineup Tuesday at Minnesota.

He bruised his left hip Dec. 22 when he dived for a loose ball and slid into the scorer's table during a win over Utah. He aggravated the injury in a Dec. 26 loss at Philadelphia and hasn't played since.

The hip injury and a sore left knee have contributed to the least productive season of O'Neal's 16-year career. He is averaging 14 points and 7.8 rebounds in 29 games.

Injury layoffs have been common for O'Neal in recent years. He missed 39 games last season, when he underwent left knee surgery. He sat out 21 games during the Heat's 2005-06 championship season because of a sprained ankle and sprained thumb.

The Heat lost O'Neal's backup, Alonzo Mourning, for the season when he tore two knee ligaments in a Dec. 19 loss at Atlanta. Dwyane Wade, Jason Williams and Dorell Wright have all battled injuries recently.

"It's not anything that's going to last," Rivers said after practice Tuesday, adding he expects Allen to play Friday at New Jersey. "It's a pinched nerve, it is what it is. From my understanding, it's day to day."

Who would want him right now?

Nobody. You'd have to be a borderline contender. Like one of those teams that is consistantly a middle seed playoff team that can't get by the big guns or needs a piece to close the deal. It would have to be a team like Dallas, Denver, Houston, Cleveland, NJ, Utah, etc.

Houston doesn't need another center, the Cavs have nothing to offer (outside Bron of course), Utah won't touch him (already have Boozer and Sloan likes character guys). That leaves Denver, Dallas and NJ. I can't see NJ taking on that salary, but maybe they think moving RJ and filler for him might be enough to make another run before Kidd and VC break down for good. Dallas would take the chance on his salary. They'd have to move Dampier and Terry and get a PG like Parker in return too. Denver has Kmart and Nene's contracts to move, so they could do it if they wanted to as well.

That's all I can see. And those are just the possibilities. I'm not sure any of them would actually do it. And that's not factoring that Shaq might refuse to go to any of those places.

I'd agree that Denver is the most likely destination, fit- and contract-wise, but both Nene and K-Mart's deals go past Shaq's, so I can't see why they make the move either. They have to think those guys give them a better chance than a broken down Shaq, right? If not and they really do want Shaq's services, why would Miami take two longer deals in exchange? I believe K-Mart's deal was just named the worst contract in the league by Bill Simmons, but then again, he tends to be a self-important shithead, so I guess I don't want to use his arguments as an evidence.

Well, maybe a good first rounder would entice Miami. In a couple years it would be Melo and a bare coupboard. Maybe they would take the chance that the pick would pay off. Kmart's deal is the same length, Nene's is one year longer. But, they may like the upside of him more than Shaq's digressing game. Denver doens't have much to offer outside those two, unless they have picks owed to them.

I think Camby could play PF. He's quick on his feet and many of the west PF's are bigger anyway (like TD).

Again, I'm not sure Miami does it, but I think they're fooling themselves if they think Shaq/Wade will get them back to the finals with Wade hurt. the supporting cast they have and Shaq digressing. Suns forward Grant Hill's best run of good health in years took a surprise interruption today when it was learned he would need to undergo an appendectomy this evening.

Suns General Manager Steve Kerr said Hill likely is expected to miss about two weeks of play.

I don't know how the Lakers are doing so well with the squad they got.

True, if they keep their roster as is, I don't think they will even make the playoffs, let alone be the 7 seed. If they were to grab a guy like Gasol or McGrady or somebody like that by the Trade Deadline, they would probably be able to make up enough losses to get the 5 or 6 seed, in which case we wouldn't play them in the first round...

My dream scenario would be Chicago getting the 8 seed, losing to Boston but perhaps giving them fits, then Boston goes on to play Cleveland in the 2nd round who should give them the most trouble (assuming LeBron does his Jordan impression again)...

Bynum looks like he's the real deal. His post moves yesterday were real impressive. I'd crap my pants if Amir could pull off some of those footwork moves, without looking like a doofus. Bynum looks as though he's put in lots of work in his offensive refinement, and I'm sure the entire Lakers org is making damn sure he gets the attention. Amir is so far off from that, it's sad. Amir's "go to" move is a tip dunk off a rebound :(

In Chicago, the Bulls are trying to spin a recent alleged spat between rookie Joakim Noah and former Piston Ben Wallace as nothing but an exaggeration. But last week, Noah was benched for an extra game after he argued with an assistant coach at a team practice.

Small forward Jarvis Hayes, who said he'd heard of the incident, said a similar situation would never occur with the Pistons' rookies.

"They're great," Hayes said. "They speak up, but they're rookies. They understand. We have good rookies. They know their place. We kind of haze them a bit every now and then, but they're pretty good."

Point guard Rodney Stuckey said he knows when and where to speak his mind -- within the 94 feet of hardwood during a game.

"Obviously, when you're on the court and during the game, that's when you should speak," Stuckey said. "But other than that, I don't tell anyone how to live their lives with what they're doing. I've got to respect my elders at the end of the day, and they're helping me out. So I respect them."

That know-your-place attitude is the key to being a good rookie, Hayes said.
"Rookies can speak up," Hayes said. "But they have to know how and when to do it. You can't say anything you want as a rookie. You have to play a little bit before you can jump up in somebody's face."

For every player in the D-League Showcase who busted his back end to impress the overseas scouts and 30 NBA teams studying the event, perhaps no one did as much damage to his reputation as Josh McRoberts.

His body language blurted, "Why do I have to be here?" on Tuesday and Thursday night, one more in a string of performances that have left people in the NBA and D-League asking: Does the rookie out of Duke want to play basketball anymore?

McRoberts, a 6-foot-10 forward with impressive passing skills, needs to get over where he thought his basketball career would be and make the best of where it is. He was one of the top-five high school players in the nation, a freshman at Duke whom some executives believed would've been a first-round pick had he left school after one season. After a disappointing sophomore season, McRoberts turned pro and dropped to Portland with the 37th pick of the second round.

McRoberts, a cheerleader for the Northwest Division's first-place Portland Trail Blazers, treated his assignment to Idaho like a deployment to Baghdad. Despite playing just three games this season, McRoberts resisted the chance to work on his game in Idaho. To go scoreless Tuesday night in 31 minutes and come back with 2 of 10 shooting that included more airballs and mindless basketball insulted his teammates, coaches and a slew of scouts.

Most believe his two-year guaranteed contract was more a product of his childhood friendship with Greg Oden, than a testament of his talent.

"He'd better figure out fast that Oden will make some new friends," one D-League coach said.

When a player with a guaranteed contract comes down, he's an immediate target for players trying to make a name for themselves. They'll challenge him. On a nightly basis, McRoberts is getting humiliated in the D-League. "If you take away the name, the contract, the school, and just judge him on what you're seeing: He looked like the worst player in the building," one Western Conference personnel director said.

Said an Eastern Conference scout, who had watched him regularly at Duke, "If he keeps this up, he will be out of the league in two years. (McRoberts) better wake up before it's too late for him. It's a shame because he has some talent."

Report: Pacers' O'Neal says he may sit out rest of season

The Indiana Pacers might have to try to qualify for the playoffs without one of their top players.

Center Jermaine O'Neal, who has been sidelined with a bruised left knee, told The Indianapolis Star for Monday's editions that he is willing to sit out the rest of the season to make sure his injury heals properly.

"That's really the prime option for me," O'Neal told the newspaper, referring to sitting out the rest of this season. "We're going to rehab now like it was the summer, with an extensive rehab. If that consists of a month or the rest of the season, I need to take the necessary steps to not come back on something that's not really healthy.

"That's the thing we have been saying. It's OK, but it really hasn't really been OK."

The Star reported that Pacers team president Larry Bird wasn't available for comment. On Saturday, the team issued a news release saying O'Neal would miss at least two weeks.

Last week, O'Neal said he was not fully healed from knee surgery to repair torn meniscus cartilage last April. He said he's surprised the healing process has been so slow.

O'Neal said he had trouble during last Wednesday's practice, but he started that night against Golden State. He left the game with 2:58 remaining in the first quarter after going scoreless and committing four turnovers in the first 9 minutes.

He is a six-time All-Star who averaged 19.4 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.6 blocks last season, but has missed 89 games over the past 3½ seasons because of injuries, illnesses and suspensions. He has missed eight games this season.

"What's more important right now is doing the things necessary to get back healthy and also not have to get my whole damn knee replaced in 10 years," O'Neal told the Star.

The Pacers (18-23) are currently a 1/2 game behind the New Jersey Nets (18-22) for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

The MVP race is going to be a three way battle throughout the rest of the season IMO...Kobe, LeBron, and maybe Garnett. The Charlotte Bobcats, knowing they need an offensive boost to help them cope with a road-heavy schedule in the second half of the season, have reached an agreement with free-agent guard Earl Boykins for the rest of the season, according to NBA front-office sources.

The signing is expected to be formally announced by the Bobcats later Thursday or Friday, with Boykins potentially in uniform Friday night when the Bobcats (No. 12 in the East at 18-28) visit Golden State.

Boykins has been working out on his own all season and looking for a new team since last summer, when he opted out of the final year of his contract with Milwaukee (worth $3 million) after averaging 14 points and 4.5 assists with the Bucks following a January trade from Denver.
