View Full Version : OGT: Pacers at Pistons (12/28/07, 8pm, WDIV) Also, Fabio poisons Jarvis....

Hayes ailing
Jarvis Hayes was sent home Thursday after becoming ill. The Pistons believe he had food poisoning. Unless Hayes makes a marked improvement, Walter Herrmann could make his first appearance on the active roster.
Zekyl 12-28-2007, 09:20 AM Lets see how he plays. Maybe he earns some rotation minutes with this. Then again, he hasn't played at all lately and he's on a new team in a new system, so maybe he looks just so-so, being out of shape a little bit and not knowing the plays very well.
Glenn 12-28-2007, 09:22 AM Valter vants to play
Zekyl 12-28-2007, 09:25 AM Tell him to watch out for birds.
Big Swami 12-28-2007, 09:26 AM If you have to put him in cold, put him in against Indiana.
Glenn 12-28-2007, 09:27 AM Tell him to watch out for birds.
I lol'd
Zekyl 12-28-2007, 09:27 AM Indiana actually isn't having that bad of a season, iirc. Granger's come along nicely.
Glenn 12-28-2007, 09:27 AM Don't forget Jonathan Bende...
Zekyl 12-28-2007, 09:28 AM Bendeeeeeeoooohhhh......................*sigh* my bad.

Zekyl 12-28-2007, 09:40 AM It won't play.
Timone 12-28-2007, 09:41 AM plays for me

TV: WDIV (HDTV) | Radio: WDFN 1130 AM - The Fan
Last Meeting: Detroit won 100-85 (April 3, 2007)
The skinny: The East has a handful of disappointing teams, but Indiana counts as one of the conference’s few pleasant surprises, coming to The Palace with a 15-14 record and currently sitting in the seventh spot for playoff seeding. The biggest change since last season is on the sidelines, where Jim O’Brien is in for ex-Pistons coach Rick Carlisle. That represents a huge shift in philosophy from Carlisle’s highly regimented, methodical offense to O’Brien’s bombs-away approach with a heavy emphasis on 3-point shooting. The Pacers have settled on a starting lineup that includes Troy Murphy at center, Jermaine O’Neal at power forward and Danny Granger at small forward with Mike Dunleavy next to point guard Jamaal Tinsley in the backcourt. Dunleavy is having something of a career revival after washing out in Golden State, leading Indiana in scoring at 17.4 a game and making 41 percent of his 3-point attempts. Granger is scoring 16.8 and O’Neal, who’s missed six games, has seen his production dip to 15.9 points and 7.4 rebounds. That’s fueled speculation that he could be traded, with the Lakers and Nets mentioned most prominently, but his weighty contract, injury history and right to opt out after the season are complicating factors.
What to watch: The Pistons are 13-2 in their last 15 games since their starting lineup has been intact and their scoring differential over that span is plus 14.1 per game. The bench has been instrumental in that run, allowing the starters to take long breaks before halftime to keep them fresh for the second half. Antonio McDyess has exceeded expectations and is easily handling a 30-minute workload after averaging 21-23 per game over this first three seasons with the Pistons. Look for Rodney Stuckey’s role to gradually expand. Flip Saunders said Thursday that the next step for Stuckey will be to get minutes with the starting unit and that the time for that is getting close. Jarvis Hayes missed Thursday’s practice due to illness, and if he isn’t feeling much better by game time the door could be opened for the Pistons debut of Walter Herrmann, acquired two weeks ago from Charlotte in the Nazr Mohammed deal.
Glenn 12-28-2007, 09:48 AM I hope we don't get Fostowned.
Timone 12-28-2007, 09:49 AM Jeff Foster still plays for the Pacers?
104-88 Pistonians
Zekyl 12-28-2007, 09:53 AM Foster is the ultimate hustle-rebound guy for them. He grabs boards like crazy. That's why he always does so well against us, we just aren't a good rebounding team, though we have been doing better.
Timone 12-28-2007, 09:54 AM John Bender WAS the next KG.
Zekyl 12-28-2007, 09:54 AM And he IS the next drive-through attendant.
Not really, he's probably set for life.
Glenn 12-28-2007, 09:55 AM John Bender WAS the next KG.

Funny, though.
Tahoe 12-28-2007, 08:14 PM Pistons held 7 straight teams under 90, if I heard that right. I have the Pacer announcers.
Kstat 12-28-2007, 08:15 PM Tayshaun lives!
Kstat 12-28-2007, 08:31 PM Stuckey will check in as the shooting guard...interesting.
Kstat 12-28-2007, 08:37 PM Pistons couldn't shoot worth a damn and they're still up 5.
Tahoe 12-28-2007, 08:39 PM He checked in for Rip but CBill looked like he ran the 2 guard route on that one play.
Tahoe 12-28-2007, 08:42 PM I just backed it up and Stuckey wa down low setting picks, etc like Rip. My bad.
Tahoe 12-28-2007, 08:45 PM Thats might be a nice rotation there. Stuckey comes in for Rip in the last 2 minutes of the quarter, then Rip checks back in for CBill for the start of the 2nd. Give the starters a break and pairs up a vet with the rookie Stuckey.
Kstat 12-28-2007, 08:48 PM Stuckey was playing pretty well too....
he needs to watch the fouls.
Tahoe 12-28-2007, 08:54 PM Pistons up 20 half wayish through the 2nd

Tahoe 12-28-2007, 09:10 PM SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET half by the Pistons!
Hoping for some Herrmann in the 2nd half
Tahoe 12-28-2007, 09:10 PM Primoz seems like he'll be a fan fav with his hustle.
Brezec, if anything, plays real hard. That bench clearing dive (with the Pistons up 20) was phenomenal. anyone notice he's one of the first ones off the bench cheering when the Pistons make a good play? gotta love his attitude. if only a certain european center we had, had that much heart....
with Jarvis able to heat it up on any given night and Mad Max becoming super reliable, this bench is downright dangerous.
anyways, i'm looking forward to some Fabio time in the 2nd half.

Timone 12-28-2007, 10:33 PM HE'S ONLY 21 YEARS OLD
Tahoe 12-28-2007, 10:57 PM Stuckey got game.
micknugget 12-28-2007, 11:11 PM Stuckey was crap tonight!! He was Diener's bitch!!
He didn't play well at all. His passing was mediocre as was his shooting and his defense started off well but rapidly went downhill. Keep in mind though that he is young and has barely played so I expect him to get MUCH better.
I was more disappointed that he was put into the game before Afflalo. Stuckey hasn't earned shit yet. Afflalo has earned the right to PT and has earned a spot in the roatation. He is a much better player right now and should get the nod at SG before Stuckey......for now.
Kstat 12-28-2007, 11:25 PM 10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals.
Crap...lol
yeah, his defense went downhill...that's what rookies tend to do when they get in serious foul trouble.

Yea, LETS keep that in mind!
Stuckey has the tools, period.
Stuckey is rough around the edges, but Flip has to stick with the plan and get him 15-20 per game. By the time the playoffs roll around he is going to be a stud off the bench. His most obvious issues right now are handling defensive pressure, and defense. He is going to score, and he doesn't seem to hold onto the ball anymore than any of our other PGs. His ability to attack is going to be critical at those times when Chauncey gets bottled up (See Cleveland) for one reason or another.
Tahoe 12-29-2007, 01:38 AM What is this his 3rd game as a pro? The rest of the team is clicking right now and had the luxury of roughly 30 games, playing together.
If this was the 3rd game of the season for everyone, we'd be happy with the way Stucks playing. But right now he is under the microscope.
Zekyl 12-29-2007, 01:42 AM MikeMyers, I was going to jump into the chat tonight but my ex stopped by and kinda took my mind of basketball, and I realized too late that the game was already over.
Black Dynamite 12-29-2007, 02:23 AM What is this his 3rd game as a pro?
Yea any heavy critiquing is stretching it at this juncture. None of his mistakes looked like something that wasn't the result of him not being acclimated yet. He for the most part looked solid to me. The defense has to improve one on one. But he's no worse than Flip Murray there at the moment with Hunter helping him improve. His offense looked fine to me. Again all the mistakes reflected him not being fully comfortable from what i saw. The kid hoisting jumpers the way he was needs to be respected as him being ridiculously hot too. that shit pretty much came out of nowhere.
Also remember how many people here shit a chicken after Affalo first played. Started pointing to his low stats and ragging on him. I think both Stuckey and Affalo will both be consistent help by late season.
Glenn 12-29-2007, 05:42 AM I'm surprised that no one has compared Stuckey's game to Flip Murray's yet, cause that's how it's looking to me so far.
And Brezec > Darko
All things being equal, I'd really take Brezec over Darko on my team
Uncle Mxy 12-29-2007, 06:33 AM Both Brezec and Darko would foul the 3P shooter, but Brezec would look sorry that he did so.
micknugget 12-29-2007, 09:41 AM 10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals.
Crap...lol
yeah, his defense went downhill...that's what rookies tend to do when they get in serious foul trouble.
With those stats he also had three turnovers and took some bad shots along with some really poor defense. I'm not saying that he is a crap player by any means. I am just disagreeing with those who thought he played well because HE DIDN'T!
He's young and he's learning the game and really forced it too much last night. Glenn, I agree with you that he's looking a little like Flip Murray but I'm hoping that he is just trying to score more to prove himself and will settle into the PG spot better after some more seasoning. It's too early to make judgements like that yet. I have seen some impressive skills and look for good things to come from this guy!
As for Brezec, if we could put his effort and heart into Darko's body, we would have one heck of a player. I like Brezec but I don't really see a lot of basketball skill or high IQ.....yet. Again, it's unfair to judge a player after just a few games.
Black Dynamite 12-29-2007, 10:10 AM I'm surprised that no one has compared Stuckey's game to Flip Murray's yet, cause that's how it's looking to me so far.
Not really to me. Has passed far more than Flip ever would and has shown to be far better dribbler on double teams. Again the turnovers were a result of youth(traps caused 2 of them). I think the talk of "poor" and "suckey" are exaggerated and premature. Outside of that one kid catching fire his defense was average. And also he already was racking up fouls, caused him to back off a lil'. with that said you guys aren't giving enough credit to the kid who was coming up netting threes at a ridiculous rate very lil' room(even Greg Kelser noticed that). Billups woulda got torched in that scenario too.
Either way the Flip Murray comparisons is a big jump imo.
Glenn 12-29-2007, 10:11 AM :mccosky:
Random thoughts
Have to admit, I have been pleasantly surprised by Primoz Brezec. It's been a long time since the Pistons had a guy as happy to be here and as hungry to stay here -- even if it's as the fourth big man -- as this guy. Did you see him dive into the Pistons bench after a loose ball Friday? He was playing mop-up duty in another blowout and this guy nearly wiped out three-fifths of the starting lineup chasing that loose ball. It was the quickest we'd seen Rasheed Wallace move in a while, trying to get out of his way. But the veterans took note. That hustle play right there will go a long way toward Brezec's acceptance into what Lindsey Hunter calls the team's circle of trust.
Listen, the guy isn't the second-coming of Vlade Divac or anything like that, but he is loving being on a winning team and he is desperate to help any way he can. He talked when he first got here about being a Piston for life. We kind of snickered when he said it since he is in the final year of his deal. But his actions on the court are showing that he was dead serious.
Also impressed with Jarvis Hayes. The guy was sick Friday. He ate a bad slider on the flight home from New Jersey Wednesday night and missed practice Thursday. He was throwing up in the locker room at halftime Friday. But he played, and played well, triggering the Pistons' 40-point second quarter scoring spree with a fast 13 points. "I wasn't going to miss the game," he said, incredulous that anybody might think he would. Hayes had been in a shooting slump most of the month, but you would have never known it. He remained upbeat, kept working and finally was able to shoot his way out of it. He can be a real valuable asset once the Pistons hit the playoff drive. When he's cooking, he can change the whole complextion of a game like nobody the Pistons have had coming off the bench (McDyess not included) since maybe Jon Barry.
You might have heard that George Blaha had to miss the game Friday. He was in Orlando broadcasting the Spartans' bowl loss. The Pistons brought in Detroiter Gus Johnson to work the television broadcast for the one game. Johnson's main gig is working Knicks games with Walt Frazier, and he actually skipped the Knicks game to work the Pistons' game. Nice, except he walked into The Palace wearing a Knicks cap. Come on, man.
Wilfredo Ledezma 12-29-2007, 10:30 AM So that was Gus Johnson with Kelser huh??? I was at the game and me and my buddy couldn't figure out who was in Blaha's seat...that's funny, he skipped the Knicks game to do the Stons, maybe we can kick Champion out of the radio booth, put Blaha on 1130 w/ Mahorn, and have Gus do game for good...I like him.
Dont be offended Glenn, it's just a pipe dream.
MikeMyers 12-29-2007, 10:36 AM I don't think the Knicks are playing until Sunday.
Big Swami 12-29-2007, 11:34 AM Obviously, I am a big fan of Primoz Brezec. I think he is so fucking gangster it is unbelievable, plus his enthusiasm makes him absolutely hilarious to watch. All he needs to do is settle down and find a flow, and he will be a great center.
He's like a great dane - he has no idea how fucking huge he is, and plays like he's a smaller guy.
I'm surprised that no one has compared Stuckey's game to Flip Murray's yet, cause that's how it's looking to me so far.
And Brezec > Darko
All things being equal, I'd really take Brezec over Darko on my team
Brezec is a great 12th man. He hustles and he's up cheering on the team every play. That said, he still isn't good, and I wouldn't want him playing any minutes in the regular rotation. I still think Amir should be the guy who gets the first look of the "deep reserves". I'm not sure how or why Primoz jumped past him in the rotation within 1 or 2 days here.
MikeMyers 12-29-2007, 11:50 AM Amir could have mailed it in after he got his contract.
Uncle Mxy 12-29-2007, 12:47 PM I still think Amir should be the guy who gets the first look of the "deep reserves". I'm not sure how or why Primoz jumped past him in the rotation within 1 or 2 days here.
Amir went in at the start of the 4th quarter, playing at C against Foster, with Herrmann and Maxiell as forwards. During that stretch, we mostly maintained our ~20 point lead.
Brezec came in midway through the 4th quarter, and that's when defense got unglued. Of course, Diener came in at the same time and burned Stuckey from beyond the arc... not Brezec's fault at all. The bit that was Brezec's fault was fouling Shawne Williams as he was shooting a 3P shot...

That might be a heavy lift...getting Brezec not to be a bull in a china cabinet.
Zekyl 12-29-2007, 07:01 PM I love the guy. I love his enthusiasm and the energy he brings to the team. I think he was a great pickup. I'd like to see us resign him to a reasonable contract at the end of the year. Once he settles in a bit, he'll be very solid for us as a 4th/5th big.
Tahoe 12-29-2007, 07:03 PM He'd have been a great guy to foul shaq, at the very least. Shaq isn't much of a threat anymore.
