View Full Version : The wife kicked my butt this year...
Tahoe 12-27-2007, 08:17 PM and I have ZERO problem with that. I had a really shitty year, but she almost doubled me.
I remember back in the day when my dad found out my mom out-waged him, he didn't take it very well.
I have no problem with this.
Any body else wife make more than them?
thoughts?

What does your wife do?
Tahoe 12-27-2007, 10:10 PM She is a translator. She goes all over the world.
Zip Goshboots 12-27-2007, 10:11 PM Fucking A my wife makes more than me! She actually thought it was a good idea to NOT sleep though classes when she was young.
My wife is an Electrical Engineer working in telecommunications. I'm ALMOST completely off the hook. Her next promotion and raise will take her into the stratosphere of being able to hire a pool boy for sex, so I don;t have to worry about ANYTHING but Michigan football! WOOOOO! I'll be able to jerk off to online porn constantly!
MikeMyers 12-27-2007, 10:55 PM Not married but I think that would be a positive.
Timone 12-27-2007, 10:57 PM My daughter asked me why I wasn't married to her mom when she was born. I told her "because I love you".
MoTown 12-27-2007, 11:00 PM I make a good amount more, but would love it if the woman made more. I have no problem retiring at age 30 and watching my wife work.
Hell I'll even raise the kids... sometimes.
Timone 12-27-2007, 11:01 PM ^ Mr. Mom?

Now there's the wife of my dreams.
Zip Goshboots 12-27-2007, 11:16 PM g-russ:
My wife is so fucking cool that if she caught me cheating, she would divorce me instead of trying some agonizing bullshit like "counseling" or "forgiveness".
Uncle Mxy 12-27-2007, 11:21 PM I'll be able to jerk off to online porn constantly!
Set up a webcam for your antics. If you work hard enough, you'll either catch up with your wife's earnings or die a happy man -- take your pick! :)
Timone 12-27-2007, 11:22 PM You want him to jerk off on camera?
Zip Goshboots 12-27-2007, 11:34 PM I wonder if jerking off on camera pays better than jerking off in front of the picture window?
Uncle Mxy 12-28-2007, 01:04 AM You want him to jerk off on camera?
I'm certainly not the end customer, but if he gives me a 10% cut for inspiring the idea within him, I'll take the money.
Zekyl 12-28-2007, 10:10 AM Ahh, but Zip, which is more fun? That's the key to that decision.
MoTown 12-28-2007, 10:27 AM How did we go from the Wife making more money to Zip jerking off on camera?

Hey, hoes gotta eat too.
b-diddy 12-28-2007, 12:47 PM my girlfriend got offered an internship that pays as much in a month as i made all last year. ive moved on to a new job, but i'd be more than cool with it even if i didnt. im not materialistic at all, so the more money she makes just means the earlier i'd be retiring, or semi-retiring (is what ill call it) assuming we stay serious.

Sounds like a tenuous connection.

What kind of internship is that?
b-diddy 12-28-2007, 01:45 PM law firm. normally not offered to students, but her dad is a big shot and got her a hookup. it kind of makes me look bad because its the kind of thing i usually fume about, but im all for this. what actually does make me mad about the situation is shes saying she'd rather make substantially less money doing something she likes (even though the job and workload would be essentially the same, just with different goals).
after less than 2 years in the workforce, im all about making as much money as possible so i can retire as young as possible.
MikeMyers 12-28-2007, 01:48 PM I would definately suck it up for the paycheck and then I can do what I want when I retire.

Zip is a highjacking fool. Threads and himself.
He takes expressing himself to a whole new level.
Every board needs a Zip.

It's not about MAKING money, it's about SAVING money. If you want to retire young, then you work your ass off til you're 45 so you can.
No new cars, no fancy house, no boat, no movies, no eating at restaurants. NO blowing money needlessly.
You'll never make it. Very few do. Too many trappings, too many neighbors to keep up with, too many whims to satisfy.
I know a guy who retired at 50, and never made more than 18.00 per hour. At my last job. Went to his party. He worked two jobs till he got married at about 38. Owned a house since he was about 20, paid it off early. He NEVER went out. NEVER spent money frivolously. NEVER bought the big 300,000 mansion as a tribute to his own greatness. Retired at 50, has a wife and two kids now. His wife makes moderate money, about 40K per year, and she won;t retire because she likes to work.
Dude scrimped and saved. And his reward is no more work at the age of 50 (his lifelong goal). He took alot of abuse along the way. Alot of people bagged him for not having "a life". Now he's retired, and most of those who gave him shit will be saying "Hello" to people at WalMart well into their 70's.
You got to sacrifice, boy. Will your "girlfriend" buy into that?
Tahoe 12-28-2007, 09:44 PM But then theres the "what if I die young and never did shit but work all my life' rationale too.
I know too many peeps that once they could retire that they couldn't get around the golf course, ski, hunt caribou 200 miles outside of nowhere or go boating, etc.
Balance my boy, balance.

its a good question. right now im getting away with not spending anything, so thats cool. its a concern though. she comes from money, and you might actually read about her relatives depending on what history class you were taking. bit of a contrast to my familly...
MikeMyers 12-28-2007, 10:33 PM I know a couple people at my place of work that are beyond cheap. One of them is single and in her 60's. She is the cheapest person you can meet. She is also obviously not all there and they can't fire her because its a public job.
She is worth a couple million bucks but she lives the worst possible lifestyle you can think of. She turns down the heat in her house to 50 so she walks around with a coat to save money. She spends half the day outside shoveling during a snowstorm because she's too cheap to pay anyone or to buy a snow blower. She will come in the office 2 hours early and leave 2-3 hours late because its free heat/internet/electricity. She dresses like a bag lady. Her hygiene is not there. She has no social skills. Very bitter. Frankly, she's disgusting. What kind of life is that? You know people that do this all of their life don't ever change and start magically spending. She has an illness of hording.

Hey -- I've resembled this (except for the personal hygiene bit -- eww).
In my early formative years, I grew up financially poor... a latchkey kid from a busted family, in guv'mint-subsidized housing in a rough neighborhood. We'd have the same cheap pasta for several days in a row because that was all we could afford. This has had a big effect on me in my later years. I'd keep the heat down because I had clothes or blankets, and didn't entertain people at my place much (though I did have social graces to keep heat "normal" when I did). My work habits weren't so much about free heat, more "if I don't work, I will be old and poor if I don't die". But I *did* see free heat as a happy side effect, consiously. I've never had a credit card balance, and only ever had one credit card for years and was afraid to use it for fear it'd suck me dry (without the benefit of good sex). I've never taken out a loan unless I could make double+ payments on it. I mostly seek out inexpensive entertainment, (like online bulletin boards :) ). I consciously live under my means.
What has moderated such instincts as I matured was the realization that my time and energy were becoming more valuable, not just personally to me, but from a financial perspective. Get sick to the point that you can't work, by throwing out your back shoveling snow (been there, done that) or have some chronic bit of coughing crud because your apartment is too damn cold (that too), and you've lost money. Look like a turd at work at the get-go, and you will be treated and rewarded like one. Thinking in the longer-term is the way I get past the recurring nightmare of being destitute. "not poor" is decidedly not the same thing as "wealthy". But, it can take awhile to get to that place, and some people never appreciate their self-worth and live in fear and shit.
MikeMyers 12-29-2007, 10:49 AM Funny thing is this person does have a chronic cough. This person is all about $$$. Not a nice person at all. She looks down upon the other women in the office because they are "manfacturing babies". Everyone is just hoping she retires soon because she's been there 40+ years. Unfortunately, work is the only thing in life considering she was never married and she has very few relatives in the area.
I save a decent % of my salary for retirement. I keep hearing people say things like they will work until their 60's. I am trying my best to avoid it. If I can make it out of there in my 50's or even sooner, I will have accomplished my goal.
Tahoe 12-29-2007, 02:37 PM What I like about my career/job whatever you want to call it, is that I should be able to still do it later in life and its something I like to do. I don't want to stop building houses/construction. I like it.
Granted, my framing days are coming to a close, so I'll have to hire a few more peeps/subs. But I still be in the game...hoping anyway.
Mxy, its interesting the people that I've come across that didn't have a lot of bucks growing up are more frugal than the ones that had some bucks.
A gf a while back was constantly worried about money, I think cuz she finally had some and wasn't about to part with it. Same with one of my buddies. I had it pretty good.
When we used to go to the bar, my bud was ALWAYS checking to see who bought the last round and if this person was going to leave before his turn to buy and he'd call me with all these conspiracies on buying rounds. It was a crack up, till I realized how muchc it affected/effected him. It does seem to go back to those formative years.
MikeMyers 12-29-2007, 03:07 PM I think it goes down to mental illness in some people. I'm sorry but if you're making $50k a year and you won't go to the doctor because of a $10 copay then you have a problem.
Zip Goshboots 12-29-2007, 03:23 PM Unless the doctor is named Kervorkian.
Uncle Mxy 12-29-2007, 04:24 PM My family eventually dug out of the trailer park, crap townhouses, and drug 'hoods into middle class status by my teens. They talked to me about having another brother or sister. The first thing I did was argue against because it'd cost too much money. That's when I was first told that I should've been born during the Depression era. It wouldn't be the last time.
I know what it's like to be anxious at a restaurant because I'm getting a meal that's less than the average price, the wait-staff can't individually divvy the bill, and I don't want to pay for someone else, even if the difference is "only" a buck or two. I'm cool about such things now, but it was a long road to get there. Just making enough money to feel like you could take the potential loss wasn't sufficient.
As for the doctor and co-pay, well, there's a lot of people who just don't like doctors, quite independent of the money aspect. <raises hand> But I know from first-hand experience that overly-frugal types tend to create unhealthy environments for themselves in the name of ruthless efficiency.
And yeah, the co-pay, the drug co-pays, the risk of fucked up billing (2 out of my 4 experiences with fucked-up collections agencies involve doctors!), the unknown risk of getting hit with a "pre-existing condition" and being denied coverage (a.k.a. increased bills) down the road, the insurers who limit lifetime coverage so every visit is (potentially) a few hundred bucks or more whacked off a few million... yeah, I still obsess a little about that shit too.
