This is a long post, but hear me out.

A while ago, the Dems wanted to pass an update to FISA (the law that allows government wiretaps) that changed a few things. FISA requires that if you wiretap someone, you've got to get a court order, but that court order can be granted after the fact if you make sure to bring it to a judge in a reasonable amount of time. Basically, Bush and the Justice Department were ignoring the current FISA law, and just wiretapping whoever they felt like, and not bothering to get any court orders at all. The updates to FISA do two things: first, it tightens up the regulation so it's harder to ignore, and second, it loosens the court order requirement so that you don't necessarily need to get a court order for every single individual who's going to be wiretapped - non-citizens will no longer be covered by FISA. This is what Bush was complaining about, and that's why he chose to ignore the law. The new law fixes that problem.

So Joe Klein, who is a conservative Democrat who writes for Time Magazine, decides to publish an editorial about the new FISA bill, and he comes out against it. Why in the world would anyone be against such a good compromise? Well, here's what Joe Klein had to say about his position:

Unfortunately, Speaker Nancy Pelosi quashed the House Intelligence Committee's bipartisan effort and supported a Democratic bill that -- Limbaugh is salivating -- would require the surveillance of every foreign-terrorist target's calls to be approved by the FISA court, an institution founded to protect the rights of U.S. citizens only. In the lethal shorthand of political advertising, it would give terrorists the same legal protections as Americans. That is well beyond stupid.
Except, of course, this is factually false on many levels. The biggest falsehood he's uttered is the fact that every target's calls have to be approved by a FISA court - this is not true, but is has been a big part of Rush Limbaugh's ranting and raving against the bill. Here is an ACTUAL QUOTE from the bill summary addendum:

* Ensure that the government must have an individualized, particularized court-approved warrant based on probable cause in order to read or listen to the communications of an American citizen. . . .

The RESTORE Act now makes clear that it is the courts -- and not an executive branch political appointee -- who decide whether or not the communications of an American can be seized and searched, and that such seizures and searches must be done pursuant to a court order.
So basically, Joe Klein, a Democrat, came out against a Democratic bill in Time Magazine, because of a factual error being propagated by Rush Limbaugh.

When people first started complaining about this to Joe Klein, he responded by saying that the bill could be interpreted the way he said. But no, it can't. It explicitly lays out who is covered and who is not. There's no wiggle room here. Wiggle room is bad for laws, because it gets the courts involved.

When people complained to the editors of Time Magazine (who really should have spotted the error and fixed it before publishing the op-ed), the editors responded by saying that they trusted Joe Klein, and that they would publish any letters from people who disagreed with him...

...except that, of course, they wouldn't. Senator Russ Feingold and Congressman John Conyers (who happens to be the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, the group of people responsible for making sure things like FISA are running correctly) both wrote letters to TIME to correct the errors, but TIME refused to publish them.

The "Liberal Media" at work.

If you think reading Time is impressive you had better broaden your cultural/intellectual horizons. However, what does point to the fact that I am at least more intellectually curious than you people is the fact that I have a subscription to both Harper`s and Smithsonian, and actually read them.

Harper`s is definitely for the intellectual elite. Smithsonian is kind of like NPR and PBS wrapped up into a magazine.

George Bush would put a good ol fashion cowboy ass whoopin on that Ruskie

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — He is better known for political maneuvers, but soon anyone with a DVD player will be able to check out Russian President Vladimir Putin's moves in another area of expertise: judo.
Putin, a black belt, said Friday that he and Yasuhiro Yamashita, a World and Olympic judo champion from Japan, have made an instructional video together.
