View Full Version : Any comments on RR 'Odd stack defense'
Tahoe 12-17-2007, 10:25 PM 3-3-5.
So I'm thinking this type of D will put a lot of pressure on the LBers?
And the 5 is pretty bafling to me. Hitters? Speed?

More mobility to blitz from different spots
darkobetterthanmelo 12-17-2007, 10:29 PM The 335 is not a typical big ten defense, it is a defense based on speed and big play ability. The 5th guy in the secondary, right now its Eric Wicks/Quinton Andrews, is a guy around the line of scrimmage. The important thing about this D is for the 3 lineman to plug the run and somehow get a pass rush. If they can do that this defense looks amazing, if they can't then teams like South Florida will run all over you.
Tahoe 12-17-2007, 10:31 PM So is it a defense designed to stop the spread offense?
I'd love to beat Oregon...maybe I should start with Apple St. I'd love to beat Apple St.
Timone 12-17-2007, 10:33 PM Maybe you should start with Melvindale.
Jethro34 12-17-2007, 10:34 PM Might be a perfect opportunity to see what guys like Jonas Mouton can do. He was a stud out of HS, but like others before has been a "tweener" between S and LB. Prescott Burgess was that way before him. Lloyd was never capable of getting anything from these guys their first few years and it was a waste.
With the players and recruits we have right now, I would imagine maybe:
B Graham - T Taylor - T Jamison
Panter - Ezeh - Logan (unless a true freshman gets the nod)
Warren - Trent - Harrison - Mouton - Cissoko
Eh? With the players we have we could rotate guys up front to keep fresh players in there, and if our true freshmen LB's can get the job done, we can get fresh legs in there, but with 5 DB's and a thin squad we're going need need a few more stud commits back there in THIS class. Otherwise, that scheme will have to change. It would be nice to keep English and figure out a hybrid scheme.

BTW...This doestn' bother me one bit.
Jethro...You know the players pretty good. Too good for me to comment on your posts, but I'm reading.
Wilfredo Ledezma 12-17-2007, 10:54 PM Jethro, no way Panter starts, he was a JuCo bust...Fitzgerald as an incoming frosh will probably be considered before him
darkobetterthanmelo 12-18-2007, 06:13 AM It may bother you when all of the sudden Michigan can't stop the run. The 3-3-5 is vunerable against the run.
Jethro34 12-18-2007, 07:04 AM The reason I put Panter in there was because he supposedly has speed and had decent enough instincts to be JUCO defensive player of the year. I would imagine a new scheme might bring out some of his better qualities that were lost in the shuffle last year. However, I'm perfectly fine with Fitzgerald taking that spot.
What scares me is that they gave up 44 to Louisville in 2005 and 2006. Last year they allowed 7 teams to score 24 or more. Overall for the past three years they allow somewhere around 19 points per game.
I guess we weren't infinitely better. Last year our "amazing" defense allowed 26 to Ball State and 42 to Ohio State.
I guess the important thing is RR has won his past two bowl games.

That could irritate me in the beginning...hopefully they have it settled by the Illinois game
Artermis 12-18-2007, 03:52 PM MSU ran this sort of defense in the Big Ten....didnt do so well.
This is a great defense against the spread, but power teams will be able to run over them.
This may be their base, but you can do lots of things out of it. The blitz packages are great out of this.
You basically trade a 290 pound lineman for 210 rover type guy.
Puts a ton of pressure on your LBs and S play, which is not our strength.
We see what happens. I have heard the Rod really prefers the 4-3, but couldnt recruit enough of those type players at WVU.
darkobetterthanmelo 12-18-2007, 04:00 PM 4-3 would be better, ND tried the 3-4 and it didn't work out so well for us...

nothing works at ND

Jethro34 12-18-2007, 10:23 PM Wow, the chick in the yellow might want someone to airbrush her left leg. A little dimply for that dress. I'd still do her, but not Blossom.
Tahoe 12-27-2007, 09:15 PM RR said a lot of his schemes were born from not a lot of talent. It'll be interesting to see the adjustments he makes to his odd stack when the majority of recruits out there will, at the very least, look at UofM as a possibility.
Does he adjust?

Did you read my last constitutional>
Dudes, I said RR will benefit from the recruiting he'll be able to do to Michigan. He'll get guys like Tim Jamison and Alan Branch instead of 260 lb linemen that can get pushed around. I'd like to see him go more to a 4 linemen line then stack after that. Plus, he's got to have better dbacks coaching than UM had. Better linebackers coaching also.
This is gonna be good, trust me.
I think I may be getting a boner.
Tahoe 12-27-2007, 10:13 PM No, I didn't read it. I have AADD. I can't concentrate that long. I read the reviews and it was a smash hit.
Zip Goshboots 12-27-2007, 10:16 PM Well, let me sum it up:
Great hire, Michigan will win the next 12 national championships, and Sparties are dickheads.
Tahoe 12-27-2007, 10:19 PM Subtract boiler plate and ... SHAZAM! We get right to the point! I don't take long on the throne, so I like the short version.
Tahoe 06-16-2008, 11:23 PM So I'm wondering if RR will run the odd stack this year.

FillyCheezeSteak 06-17-2008, 12:01 AM I remember hearing that it was Schafer's decision and he is completely a 4-3 guy. However, if there were ever to be a 3-3-5 type of defense implemented I think Brandon Harrison would be AMAZING in it. Harrison is a guy that many Michigan fans love, but know he has no "real position." The thing about him that is great is that he plays well in short coverage (no deep zones), man-to-man and he is a terrific edge blitzer (just ask Jimmy Clausen). I think moving him around the field and bringing him off the edge, while giving a DT a rest on 3rd down scenarios wouldn't be a bad idea...............
But I don't see it happening except for an "occassional" 3rd down or end of the game situation.
P.S. Scott Schafer beat USC and that earned him a lot of respect and it's good enough for me.
