Pistons vs. Warriors Gameday

:langlois:
by Keith Langlois

TV: FSN Detroit | Radio: WDFN 1130 AM - The Fan

Last Meeting: Detroit won 111-104 (November 14, 2007)

The skinny: The Pistons’ new acquisitions, center Primoz Brezec and forward Walter Herrmann, were not at practice Saturday but were scheduled to take physicals later in the day. Should they pass, both players could be dressed for Sunday’s game against the Warriors.

“Primoz’s a big guy, could be serviceable inside; Walter’s kind of a 4-3, has the ability to shoot the perimeter,” said Pistons coach Flip Saunders, who had yet to speak directly to the former Bobcats. “I guess we’ll have to wait and see how they fit in. I think they could help bolster our bench a little bit.”

An extra-early 12:30 p.m. tipoff time Sunday won’t do any favors for a Pistons squad that went through some lulls Friday against the Hawks. Saunders acknowledged after the game that the energy level would have to be higher against Golden State, the NBA’s second-highest scoring team at 109.0 points per game.

“Well, we better be (up),” Saunders said. “They’re right now playing probably as well as anybody in the league. They had us down 22, 24, we came back and won. If we thought this (Atlanta) team got out and ran and scored off turnovers, Golden State’s probably the best in the league.”

Saunders’ remarks came before the Warriors blitzed the Los Angeles Lakers Friday with a game-ending 14-2 run to win, 108-106. Baron Davis scored eight of his 22 points during the furious rally. Golden State had trailed, 102-94, with 3:29 left.

“I watched them last night against the Lakers and they just bring so much energy, man, it’s ridiculous,” said Lindsey Hunter. “But we know how we have to play them. We can’t try to fall into that small-ball game, because you can’t win that with them.”

What to watch: Watch out for Stephen Jackson, Pistons fans. No, seriously. The Warriors started the season 1-7, losing the first six, while Jackson was serving an NBA suspension. The last of those losses was the Pistons’ impressive come-from-behind 111-104 victory in Oakland Nov. 14. Since his return, Golden State has gone 12-4 with Jackson averaging 20.8 points, 3.9 assists and 1.7 steals.

“I think when they made him captain, that meant a lot to him, and you can see it on the court,” Hunter said. “He’s more in control than I’ve ever seen him and he’s playing really well. He’s the guy that kind of drives that team.”

Jackson averaged 14.3 points against Detroit last season, shooting 1-for-10 from 3-point range. Saunders said the 6-foot-8 forward still creates a troublesome matchup for whichever Pistons takes a turn on him defensively.

“His impact is that he creates a lot of mismatches,” Saunders said. “He’s taking almost eight 3s a game. They play him at a 4, they play him at a 3, they play him all over the floor, as they do their whole team. He’s got the ability to play against bigger people. Unless you can punish him down on the block, unless you can do those kind of things, then he’s got an advantage at the other end.”

When's the last time we beat these fuckers? I remember like 2 years ago Billups hit a clutch shot to beat them but since then I don't remember beating this team recently

I'm going to the game today, I wonder how many people will be there, or if the Palace parking lot will be plowed...

Max had 7 straight points and a big block in one stretch that I caught. AA has looked good from what I've seen.

McDyess has a double-double right now. There's 10:30 left in the 3rd quarter.

Let's keep this up so we can see Amir.

It seems like the only place on the road GS can win is Dallas.

76-51, you think we'll get to put in the backups soon to let them get some run and let the starters rest? I have my doubts, that would be a good coaching decision.

Gotta love Sheed talking trash when they're down on the block for free throws.

I take that back, he just got T'ed up.

So Brezec got some time? What about Herrmann?

Also, did anyone catch who Tay was talking to after the game? He did the post-game interview then turned around started talking with someone in street clothes that had walked onto the court, but I didn't get a long enough look to see if I recognized them.

1.) Hermann wasnt visible to me. must not have made it to detroit because of weather, who knows.

2.)Tay was doing the post game with FSN. thats all i saw.

Great game overall and it was nice to see the second squad get some decent minutes. Max was a beast, Afflalo looked pretty comfortable and got to show off a pretty nice shot, and Amir looked pretty good. Brezec seems to play with energy but made too many forced passes. Hunter just cannot play anymore. He looked clueless running the point and struggled to make passes or even handle the ball. We need Stucky back. At this point I'd rather have Flip running the point and since i can't stand Flip, that says a lot.

Hermann was sitting behind the Detroit bench in street clothes.

I like Brezec. He is no marshmallow. I didn't see enough to say if he had really good defensive techniques but he looks like guys driving to the hole are going to have to go around him. Something we were lacking.

Those no-look passes to the other team aren't going to win him any PT. It's good that he isn't a black-hole like Nazr though.

too bad Herrmann wasn't suited up, as he would have gotten some PT in blow out time. Brezec at the very least doesn't look like a stiff. he's got some nice court vision from the post.

First and foremost for me is does Brezec have an interior defensive presence. Everything is icing after that.

i can't agree, lindsey involves the other players and does not look for his shot first. Judging him by anything else is a waste because thats all you can want from a guy in that spot if you got enough pieces on your bench. I want stuxkey back too. but we dont know what to expect as far as how long it takes him to find comfort. Affalo is just recently finding his.

Matt
12-16-2007, 05:33 PM
everytime i see afflalo get minutes, i think that he's a perfect hustle role player. he plays good defense, makes good plays, and doesn't over extend himself on offense. he's got a good outside shot to boot.

Zekyl
12-16-2007, 05:36 PM
Everyone that just looks at stats will dispute that outside shot comment, but he shot it well in college, shot it well in the preseason, and just hasn't been on yet this season. He does have good form and it'll come around though.

Afllalo is a younger Michael Curry with a jumpshot. I will take that with where he was drafted. We need Stuckey, this Lindsey stuff will not do. Hermann and Ryan Field battled for "who looks the dumbest in a suit" with Ryan Field winning by a nose. Oh, and for the 8 thousand people who were actually there, the halftime show was decent.

Well, I do think he's better at the 3-ball than he has shown this year, but I would consider the 16-20 foot range an "outside shot" as well, and he has been pretty consistent from there all year.

Its more than we could have asked for with that pick. Usually the later first round guys rarely make the rotation for contending teams. The fact that he's playing valuable minutes for us, and playing them well, is great.

I don't know if you watched the game but Lindsey was pretty awful. There is a lot more to running the point then just getting other players involved. He brought the ball up the court and then immediately passed to another player around the perimeter. He didn't make any nice passes and didn't "lead" the offense at all. Heck, Brezec did more to run the offense. The point guard has to run the offense and Lindsey doesn't. While he was running the point we had two or three shot clock violations which is usually a true sign that there are problems. Add to that Lindsey's poor shooting and I see him as entirely ineffective.

I prefer Lindsey over Flip. At least in garbage time. Flip's me-me-me attitude in GT makes him my least favorite player on this team.

Get it right, guys.

Lindsey is just teaching the kids about shot clock violations and how to find your shot when you get the ball passed to you with 1 on the shot clock.

He's a coach on the floor, don't you know?

Does anyone teach the kids what NOT to do on the fast break better? I mean, we all know he knows how to do it, but the fact that he takes the time to show them how everything can go wrong is just spectacular.

We watched the same game, but i'm not bias towards hunter. i think he's mediocre and skill wise flip murray is far more athletic. but he's a better defender, and doesnt steal away shots from other people on iso plays all 4th quarter ego chucking his ass off in hopes of a big contract. Overall we did a better job of sustaining the lead and defending towards the end of the game. Its better for the younger players and improves our bench overall. If you're willing to piss that away because Hunter isnt Earl Watson, whatever. I stand by my opinion that Hunter is a better option until Stuckey is ready. The is the first time i've watched the whole game of a blowout w/o turning it off after the flip/nazr combo goes psycho iso.

"All we've been hearing is about his great hops, and then he doesn't take the dunk,'' Billups said. "We've still got no evidence that he can dunk. When I was a rookie, I would have dunked that ball, but I'm old now.''

Zekyl
12-17-2007, 02:50 PM
How many dunks does Billups have this season. I haven't seen one yet. He had 7-8 all season last season.

Actually, that may have been 2 seasons ago, because I remember he had the bet with teammates.
