NBA legend Kenny Smith named PBL commissioner

12/06/07 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)

ROCKVILLE, MD - NBA legend and TNT basketball analyst Kenny "The Jet" Smith has joined the Premier Basketball League as its commissioner, bringing a wealth of basketball and multi-media experience to the cutting-edge new league.

"We are very proud that an executive of Kenny Smith's caliber has seen the dynamic potential of the Premier Basketball League and has agreed to help us execute our vision of a fan-first digital basketball revolution," said PBL CEO and President Tom Doyle.

As commissioner, Smith will oversee many key PBL initiatives, including the launch of the PBL internet tv channel and a multi-player virtual video game. Additionally, he will drive the league's "Fans Come First" mission, requiring that all players participate in fan meet-and-greets after each game to sign autographs and pose for pictures and ensuring that ticket and concession prices remain fan-friendly.

The Premier Basketball League is a ten-team independent league focusing on fan experience, high-quality organizations and community involvement. Player compensation is tied to wins and losses, encouraging a team-first mentality over individual accomplishments. The league is headquartered in Rockville, MD and Chicago, Illinois and includes teams from Montgomery County, MD, Rochester, N.Y., Reading, Pa., Wilmington, N.C., Jacksonville, Chicago, Dallas, Little Rock, Quad Cities, Ill., and Rockford, Ill. The PBL season begins on Jan. 4, 2008.

Smith, a Queens, NY native, had an illustrious 10 year career in the NBA, winning two NBA Championships with the Houston Rockets. He is the Rockets all-time three-point field goal percentage leader and the career assist record-holder at the University of North Carolina. He is currently a studio analyst for TNT's NBA coverage and provides analysis for the New York Knicks on MSG Network. He also hosts a Sirius Satellite Radio show, is a Yahoo! NBA analyst and appears in several NBA-themed video games.

Should be noted that Hakeem is the only player The Mailman would put in the same sentence as The Mailman.

Floor leaders in high demand

By Kenny Smith, Yahoo! Sports
December 18, 2007

With the NFL playoffs nearing, it’s a natural time to remember that a great point guard is like a great quarterback. He’s the player who decides who gets the ball and when and where they get it.

A point guard isn’t measured just by his points, rebounds or assists. He is measured by his decisions.

To become a great team it’s almost imperative to have an above-average floor leader as your point guard. Yes, there are situations where this hasn’t been the case – the Chicago Bulls of Michael Jordan are one example – but there aren’t many.

Think of the great teams. The Boston Celtics with Bob Cousy, Tiny Archibald and the late Dennis Johnson. The Los Angeles Lakers with Magic Johnson. The Utah Jazz with John Stockton. The Detroit Pistons with Isiah Thomas.

Among present-day teams, the San Antonio Spurs have Tony Parker. The Phoenix Suns have Steve Nash. These guys make or break you. They can change the game with their leadership and tempo – the two components that give a team its style of play.

With that being said, let’s take a look at my top 10 point guards for this season.

1. Steve Nash: The best in the game. His ability to get the Suns into their fast-paced tempo every night is uncanny. Every team’s defensive emphasis is to slow the Suns down. Most fail. Credit Nash for that.

1a. Jason Kidd: If Nash is No. 1, Kidd is 1a. And if you put Kidd on the Suns running Mike D’Antoni’s offense, we might be calling him the best.

3. Tony Parker: Not the most dominant point guard left, but he makes the best decisions. The Spurs have become a dynasty and Parker is one of the reasons why.

4. Baron Davis: “The Body Guard” overpowers most of his peers. Davis’ ability to fuel the Golden State Warriors’ run-run-run offense puts him near the top. If his shot selection gets better he’ll move up the list.

5. Chauncey Billups: Billups is often overlooked in “best of” debates. But his leadership skills and his ability to get the Pistons into their halfcourt sets makes him a keeper for this list. Mr. Big Shot’s clutch shooting also might rank at the top of all the point guards.

6. Deron Williams: Williams leads the next generation of point guards. Jerry Sloan and the Utah Jazz's pick-and-roll offense may have helped Williams improve his decision-making more than any third-year guy around.

7. Chris Paul: The possible second coming of Isiah Thomas. Once his jump shot improves, he’ll move up the list with a bullet.

8. Andre Miller: Very underrated and underappreciated. His weight fluctuation from season to season is a knock against him. But when he’s in great shape, he’s among the better point guards.

9. T.J. Ford: His lack of size hurts and keeps him from being a better defender and having a more dominant presence on the floor.

10. Raymond Felton: My sleeper pick and a diamond in the rough. Playing with so many other young players could somewhat stunt his development. He needs a couple of fundamentally sound vets lining up next to him.

LOL at Baron Davis' shot selection needing to get better. Baron's game is hardly evolving at this point.

LOL at Chris Paul's jumper needing improving. He's shooting 49.7% on jumpers this year, if I believe 82games.com.

I would say a good chunk of cp3's shots are layups and runners in the lane...no?

Uncle Mxy

80% jumpers, and that was eFG, not FG, but still...

Note that he's shooting 38% taking 3 3P shots a game, and he's built up his perimeter game in a big way from when he started.

He stunk it up against us in one game, but I think CP3 is gonna kick ass and take names in this league. If you believe the pundits, the Hornets are inferior to Utah at all positions, but who has the better record?

Constructing the perfect player

By Kenny Smith, Yahoo! Sports
January 2, 2008

As the New Year arrives and I think of all the greats who have blessed the basketball courts in my era, Michael Jordan is often called the perfect player. If he wasn’t perfect, he was very close.

That got me wondering on how to construct the perfect player Frankenstein-style. Which parts of which players would I use?

The first part, which allows the body to function is the heart. This has to come from the player who has no fear of failure and a killer instinct: Kobe Bryant.

The brain obviously is also vital. I need someone who understands his strengths and limitations and also understands his players and coaches to a great degree. That’s Jason Kidd.

Vision helps separate the truly great players from the very good ones. And no one sees the floor quite like Steve Nash.

If this is going to be the perfect player, he shouldn’t lack for athleticism. Not only should he be able to go by people, but also through or over them. Give me LeBron James’ combination of speed, quickness and muscle. There are faster players baseline to baseline than James, but they don’t have his size and leaping ability.

The hops go to Josh Smith. He’s the new-age Dominique Wilkins.

The strength of a basketball player is underrated. Skinny players like Reggie Miller and Rip Hamilton don’t need bulk to dart around screens. But give a player the strength of Dwight Howard and now you have a monster.

The longer the wingspan, the better the ability to grab rebounds, deflect passes and make other plays your opponents can’t make. So give me Kevin Garnett’s reach.

The best players shoot with a quick release. They can get off a shot while their defender is still flatfooted. Which is why I’ll need Ray Allen’s wrists.

Soft hands are essential. You want someone with a good touch who can catch all kinds of passes. That would be Tim Duncan.

The feet give you balance. They help you change direction, tightrope the baseline and stay in front of your man on defense. Give me the feet of Manu Ginobili.

The other parts that make up a great player aren’t as tangible. Like timing. The best shot blockers have great timing. Jump too soon and your opponent can duck into you and draw a foul. Jump too late and you’ll get dunked on. I want the timing of Marcus Camby.

Savvy comes from experience. The most battle-tested players know what to expect before it happens. And few players are more battle-tested than Chauncey Billups.

Patience is important. Great players know when to attack. They know how to set up their opponent with a fake. They don’t rush and they rarely force a bad shot. Is there anymore more patient than Duncan? He’s my first and only two-time part member.

Lastly, no one likes a sore loser or a bad winner. That’s why I value sportsmanship. To be a true winner, you have to be gracious. Like Michael Redd.

Now this is a player who’s truly the sum of his parts.

If I have to pick only one, I'll go with...

I do like that he gave Chauncey some props, at least. A ricidulous article, but he was basically just trying to say who was the best at what in an interesting way. A nice effort, but still ended up just like a typical Kenny article.
