View Full Version : Bring Tom Izzo to Detroit! (old thread)
Zekyl 11-27-2007, 02:01 PM We all know Flip is horrible. No one wants him here. I wouldn't be surprised if Dumars even secretly despised him. So who do we replace him with? I say get us Tom Izzo. Make the call Joe.
Obviously it wouldn't happen until after the season, but who would oppose this? Here's my proposed coaching staff.
Head Coach - Tom Izzo
Assistant Coaches - Dave Cowens, Michael Currey, Bill Lambeer
Obviously the trainers/medical staff would stay the same (we'll never let Arnie go).
Izzo has the fire. He has the passion. He actually knows what the hell he's doing, whereas Flip has repeatedly proven he doesn't have a clue. We're not winning anything with Flip here, so bring in someone new. At the very least, Izzo won't be afraid to play the young guys and develop their talent. What do we have to lose?
Just trying to start a fun conversation here. Who knows if this would ever actually happen.
WTFchris 11-27-2007, 02:09 PM When Stuckey comes back and Flip Murray consistantly plays 25 minutes a night, and Chris Webber comes back and plays 30 minutes a night...then I may be on board with you. Right now I am going to hold off until I see the team play a long stretch without missing key players.
Glenn 11-27-2007, 02:18 PM This thread would have been much more interesting about 7-8 weeks ago before MSU football went in the tank and the Sparties ran for cover.
I've thought for years that Izzo was a viable choice for the Pistons, I'll go as far as saying that I feel it's almost "likely", someday.
Zekyl 11-27-2007, 02:20 PM I rememeber reading reports before that Dumars had talked to him and Izzo wasn't ready to leave MSU yet. But that was at least a year or two ago.
By the way, talk like that won't get you into the green and white tent. Its a good thing Bukdow doesn't read teh NBA thread.
yargs 11-27-2007, 02:40 PM I'd take a little brown bag of dog feces over Flip Saunders so why not Izzo?
Any coach that lets an undersized power forward shoot 17-20 against you without even attempting to make adjustments (similar to watching lebron tear us a new one last year in game 5..only shaq or wilt chamberlain should be able to go 17-20) or to never try doubling Deron Williams (who is great) who was absolutely abusing an overmatched chauncey billups...flip needs to go.
Not to mention how flip's substitution patterns in the 4th quarter were solely responsible for 2 of those west coast swing losses (lakers and kings) I've had enough. When Reggie Theus outcoaches you...well, that's just bad. This team is going nowhere with Flip Saunders. I don't see how Joe Dumars doesn't realize this.
Hermy 11-27-2007, 02:48 PM Saunders is so much better than Izzo it's laughable.
Zekyl 11-27-2007, 03:16 PM Saunders is so much better than Izzo it's laughable.
Care to back that statement up? I"m not saying you're right or wrong, I'd just like to know you're reasoning.
Tahoe 11-27-2007, 03:18 PM We might win a couple more games with a different coach, but Flip isn't the reason that we don't win the title, imo. We are too soft in the middle. We need a big man with attitude.

Sheed in shoulder pads.
Zekyl 11-27-2007, 03:21 PM ? I'm not quite sure I follow.
Hermy 11-27-2007, 03:24 PM Izzo has nothing but rah-rah. That doesn't work in the pros.
Black Dynamite 11-28-2007, 12:02 AM Saunders is so much better than Izzo it's laughable.
I hate Flip and agree with this ten fold. Some people need to stop watching College basketball and the NBA in the same week. Until someone can name a straight out of college coach with some rings in his first 2-3 years, this is a not so legit discussion.
Timone 11-28-2007, 12:10 AM Someone needs to create the "Official Tom Izzo Watch Thread" to lure the Sparties back.
b-diddy 11-28-2007, 12:53 AM college to pro's doesnt always work, and yea, izzo would need to change... but i'd take him over flip.
flip's flex offense is brutal.
i dont watch enough sparty ball to really claim to be an izzo expert, but when they won the championship he heavilly stressed rebounding and transition D. they were pretty amazing how they could crash the boards and similtaneously get down court. seems to me when the lakers were great they were kind of similar.
but if we were hoping for a coach to come in and lead us to a championship from ncaa's, well, i dont think any coach is doing that, but i'd say coach k is the only real candidate.
metr0man 11-28-2007, 01:44 PM I hate Saunders mainly because his defensive philosophy is his offensive philosophy. He came up with the little catchphrase about how "if you're playing good offense, it spurs good defense"... which maybe is true, but so what? That's not a way to coach defense, because you can never always have good offense with this roster, particularly when its based around jump shooting. In the old days, when our offense sputtered, we locked down on defense. These days, when our offense sputters, we get raped by Boobie and Lebron.
Man, fuck him.
To re-iterate: YOU ASK HIM ABOUT DEFENSE AND HE RESPONDS BY LOOPING THE QUESTION BACK TO OFFENSE. THAT'S HIS PHILOSOPHY! PLAY GOOD OFFENSE TO PLAY GOOD DEFENSE.
i have no idea though if Izzo is any good though, i dont care about MSU (go blue).
Zekyl 11-28-2007, 02:00 PM Here's a question for everyone.
If not Izzo, then who? This can go from the Bring Tom Izzo thread to the Who can we get to replace Flip thread.
Timone 11-28-2007, 03:10 PM Larr--Fuck it, I'm not going there.
Zekyl 11-28-2007, 03:14 PM Larr--Fuck it, I'm not going there.
Come on Karl, why would Larry King want to coach the Pistons? Lets be realistic here.
Maybe this guy - :howdidwegetminer:
Uncle Mxy 11-28-2007, 03:43 PM I'm sure he meant Larry Frank, but he was just extended by the Nets:

Glenn 11-28-2007, 03:52 PM But could be fired soon anyways.
Zekyl 11-28-2007, 04:44 PM Not a chance. I'd rather have Larry Fitzgerald as the Pistons coach than:

Timone 11-28-2007, 04:47 PM I'm talking about Larry Bird. We don't need a "Michigan man" to coach them.
Glenn 07-21-2009, 10:38 AM And the Memphis Commercial Appeal, seeking insight on former Spartans/new Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph, got this from Tom Izzo: "He's made mistakes. But I'll tell you this: I'd like to coach him again. If I got an NBA job, I'd like to coach him."
If you got an NBA job? Izzo's starting his own NBA rumors.
Glenn 07-21-2009, 11:13 AM I love the fact that when searching for an Izzo thread to put that in, I found about 6 or 7 "Izzo to..." threads.
Those should never be merged.
It is my dream that someday we'll get at least 50 of those, maybe even an "Izzo to..." subforum.
There is no post more fun to make than simply "Izzo?". Especially when it's like the head of the Detroit school board resigning.
Glenn 03-29-2010, 03:21 PM Detroit Pistons (23-50)
Take a long look at the Pistons' body language -- particularly of veterans Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton -- and you get an idea of how tough this season has been. With Michigan State in the Final Four, expect to read a lot of lines on the possibility of Spartans coach Tom Izzo running the Pistons.

Tahoe 01-04-2017, 07:30 PM Just watching him do his best impersonation of purple face. Me thinks Piston's players would slap him if he started barking at them like that. He will beat Butgers tonight though.
Tahoe 01-04-2017, 07:31 PM But I wouldn't mind seeing it. So yeah, Izzo to Pistons!
Vinny 01-04-2017, 10:05 PM Not a chance. I'd rather have Larry Fitzgerald as the Pistons coach than:

Larry Fitzgerald?? Yeah right! Good call Zekyl!
Idiot.

Uncle Mxy 10-21-2017, 08:45 AM The second annual Community Conversation on Bullying, presented by Defeat the Label and Meemic Insurance, helps facilitate an open discussion on the reality of bullying and what can be done to enhance it in local Pistons sports boards.
The discussion will be led by Emcee Kevin Epling, national co-director of Bully Police USA, along with keynote speakers Justice Blind Guy Bernstein of the Michigan Supreme Court and Coach Tom Izzo of the Michigan State University Basketball team.
“I don’t know of any Pistons sports board in Michigan or around the world that hasn’t been affected by sub-par bullying in some form,” Defeat the Label Co-Founder Jeff Sakwa said. “We hope this important forum will help continue the conversation with children, winos, teachers and many others in hopes that we can bring an end to weak-ass bullshit. Do bullying right, or don't do it at all. Kobra-Kai -- never die!”
