Glenn 11-15-2007, 04:58 PM Michigan's got Georgetown tonight.
GT favored by 14.5 and that is probably not enough.
It will be interesting to see how Coach B fares in this one.
Wilfredo Ledezma 11-15-2007, 05:09 PM Beilein has done well extracting talent from teams that weren't supposed to do much...like last years WV team...
I'd like for UM to keep it close, but odds are this will be one of the many thumpings they will endure in what's probably a "start from square one" season...
nobody will be able to matchup w/ Hibbert
MoTown 11-15-2007, 05:51 PM Is this game on TV?
MoTown 11-15-2007, 08:49 PM Doesn't look like I'm missing much... down by 25 with 10 minutes left. It looks like Grady is the only reason we're not down by 60.
Looking at the stats, I do have one question: how does Georgetown have 1 foul through 30 minutes? Has Michigan drove the lane once? Or is this a case of some home cooking?
Glenn 11-16-2007, 03:19 PM Okay, this seems weird to me.
Gillispie has always struck me as a weird dood, tho.

(10) Michigan St. (3-0) vs. (2) UCLA (4-0)
Game Info: 10:00 pm EST Tue Nov 20, 2007
By MIKE VOTTA, STATS Senior Writer
UCLA is still figuring out how to play without star point guard Darren Collison.
With Collison on the bench, the second-ranked Bruins face their biggest test of the young season on Tuesday when they face No. 10 Michigan State in the championship game of the CBE Classic in Kansas City, Mo.
Collison has yet to play this season after injuring his knee in UCLA's first preseason game on Nov. 2. The junior, who averaged 12.7 points and 5.7 assists in 2006-07, is not expected back until Nov. 28 against George Washington.
Sophomore Russell Westbrook has started in his place and is averaging 11.5 points and 6.8 assists. However, the Bruins (4-0) have turned the ball over 66 times so far without their usual ballhandler, including 18 in Monday's 71-59 semifinal win over Maryland.
UCLA is also missing guard Michael Roll and forward James Keefe - both because of foot injuries - and had just eight scholarship players in uniform against the Terrapins.
"We were short-handed and got fatigued at the end," Bruins coach Ben Howland said.
The depleted lineup could be a problem against Michigan State (3-0), which is averaging 85.0 points per game as it tries to install a new, up-tempo offense. The Spartans, who have outscored their first three opponents by an average of 18 points, scored just 65.0 points per game last season.
However, the transition hasn't been easy - Michigan State committed 20 turnovers in their 83-65 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Wednesday and 17 in Monday's 86-83 victory over Missouri. The Spartans had trouble with the Tigers' full-court pressure and twice lost double-digit leads before squeaking out the win.
"Some of our younger players weren't ready for that kind of pressure and intensity at this time of the year," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "It's great when you can learn and still win. That's what we did."
The Bruins are forcing an average of 20 turnovers per game.
UCLA freshman Kevin Love has helped to make up for Collison's absence, averaging 20 points and 11.8 rebounds. He had 18 points and 16 boards against the Terrapins.
The Bruins struggled offensively overall against Maryland, shooting a season-low 37.7 percent from the field.
"To win shooting 37 percent says a lot about our defense," Howland said.
Preseason All-American Drew Neitzel scored 21 points to lead Michigan State on Monday. The senior guard had struggled somewhat in his first two games, scoring just 27 total points, and was largely quiet in Monday's second half before hitting a late 3-pointer and a pair of free throws with 2.4 seconds left.
Sophomore forward Raymar Morgan scored 19 to match his team-leading average, but freshman guard Chris Allen - who came in averaging 15 points through his first two college games - was held scoreless.
UCLA and Michigan State are meeting for just the seventh time, with the Bruins holding a 4-2 edge. UCLA won the last meeting, 76-64 at Michigan State on Dec. 21, 2004.

Timone 11-20-2007, 07:57 PM Yeah, I've never been a fan of college basketball, but I watch some of the tournament. Wait, what the fuck am I posting in here for?
Tahoe 11-21-2007, 12:44 AM Well 'we' gave it hell, but UCLA pulled it out. I kept thinking 'we' should have been up more than 10 in the first half. So they came back and stoled it.
I was not impressed with the last 2 possessions. Was that the play Tom called? Or didn't we execute the play? I mean not much of an attempt to go inside with that at all. Then Nietzel had to just hoist a deep 3 pter.
Good game though. Good to play another highly ranked team that well and prolly should have won.

Glenn 11-30-2007, 04:48 PM Michigan, the Harvard of the midwest, is playing, um, Harvard tomorrow.
The turtleneck will be in full effect.
MoTown 11-30-2007, 08:04 PM I don't know if this has been brought up...
But why, on free thows, are the players standing above the block as the first spot this year? Why did the rule change?
This has been bugging me all year.
JackTalkThai 12-02-2007, 11:43 AM The free throw lineup was a rule change that was put into effect this year.
Good game michigan. Turtleneck was a coaching a school that doesn't even give athletic scholarships and he took your team behind the woodshed for one last "fuck you". He made you lose embarrassing games when he was your coach and he's still making you lose embarrassing games as another team's coach. Ah the irony!

Yeah but there's losing to Western Kentucky "sucks"...and then there's losing to Harvard "sucks".
Michigan sucks so much worse this year than anyone previously thought. I simply felt that this bottom of the barrel in the basement of suckiness was noteworthy. My apologies if you already knew how just how much they really sucked. I guess I expected more and just wasn't aware of their extreme suckitude.
It must suck to be a Michigan basketball fan these days.
The Duke and UCLA games should be fun learning experiences.
MoTown 12-03-2007, 11:39 PM Apparently Alex Legion has decided to transfer from Kentucky.
LOL.
Artermis 12-04-2007, 02:59 PM Does Michigan have a shot or want him back?
Stay tuned.
Artermis 12-04-2007, 03:01 PM Hey Jack is that like losing to a DII team? I mean I know it was an exhibition and all, or squeaking one out against Oakland. I mean for such a high profile school MSU should be blowing teams out by 20+ every night especially these nonBCS schools.
UM bball sucks. Did anyone really expect anything different when a new coach comes in with a totally different style and has to basically teach these kids fundamentals?
MoTown 12-04-2007, 09:14 PM I actually heard Dickie V say Legion has requested to play at Michigan.
Glenn 12-07-2007, 04:02 PM Well, the Lute Olson secret is finally out of the bag.
Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson on leave, facing divorce proceeding
By ARTHUR H. ROTSTEIN, Associated Press Writer
December 7, 2007
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson is getting divorced.
A divorce petition was filed in Pima County Superior Court on Thursday, the same day the 73-year-old coach said he would extend his leave from the team through the end of the season, court spokesman Dave Ricker said Friday. It's not clear whether Olson or wife Christine filed for divorce.
Ricker said he has not seen the petition, and legal records supervisor Ray Rivas in the clerk's office says court rules bar public scrutiny of divorce petitions until the filer's spouse has been served or 45 days have passed.
The filing was first reported online by the Tucson Citizen and the Arizona Daily Star.
Olson announced his leave Nov. 4 and said the reasons were personal and not health related.
In a statement released by the university Thursday announcing Olson's leave extension, the Hall of Famer said he plans to return to coach the Wildcats for the 2008-09 season.
"There are personal issues within my family that need to be addressed and I must devote my full energy to that," Olson said in the statement.
Gordon James, a public relations executive who has represented the Olsons, had no comment other than to say, "Mrs. Olson is en route from New York and will be issuing a statement." James said her flight was expected to arrive Friday evening.
Athletic director Jim Livengood, in Chicago with the team, said: "There's no comment from me. It's a personal family matter and should be addressed appropriately."
The No. 22 Wildcats (5-2) play Illinois on Saturday.
Olson has coached Arizona for 24 seasons and posted a 589-187 record with 23 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. His Wildcats have won 11 Pac-10 championships, reached the Final Four four times and won the 1997 NCAA title.
Assistant Kevin O'Neill, who is serving as interim coach while Olson is gone, said Friday he wants Olson's privacy respected. He said he's doing the best he can to fill in for "someone who is true greatness."
"I have great respect and admiration for what our players have done to this point in terms of focusing on basketball only in a very difficult situation -- a situation that, really, there's no blueprint for," O'Neill said.
Olson and his first wife, Bobbi, were married for 47 years before her 2001 death from ovarian cancer after a 2 1/2 -year fight. The couple had five children.
She served an active role in Olson's basketball program, joining him on recruiting trips and even cooking pancakes for prospective players when they came to visit Tucson. Former players revered her for being so instrumental in creating a family atmosphere. The university renamed the basketball court Lute & Bobbi Olson Court after her death.
In April 2003, Olson married Christine Jack Toretti -- a prominent, politically active Pennsylvania businesswoman who is 22 years his junior.
Toretti, who took Olson's last name after their wedding, remains chief executive of an oil and gas drilling company and sits on several corporate boards. She has three sons from her first marriage.
AP Sports Writer Andrew Seligman contributed to this report from Chicago.

It was a huge win. BYU is a very good team and they hit MSU with everything they had in the first half. Being able to come back, on the road, against a team like BYU is a huge positive. Gutsy win.
UM, on the other, got torched and looked bad doing it. Loved watching Manny Harris play with his shirt untucked in the second half. Looked like he was playing on the corner of Fenkell and Telegraph. Bielein is fucked. Those players are uninspired to say the least and the recruiting class he has coming in is shit. UM men`s basketball is going the way of the women`s program. Guess you weren't reading the M boards much after that blazing 2-0 start that Michigan got off to. Articles were being written about the high scoring new look offense and Beilein's difficult to dissect 1-3-1 amoeba defense. Manny Harris was Jamal Mashburn and Kelvin Grady was a young Darren Collison. Confidence was high.
Then reality hit and the bottom fell out at 32,000 feet. :)

Glenn 12-18-2007, 09:16 AM Letter to my fans
Dick Vitale
SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM
To: My favorite people, all of the fans that make college basketball special!
From: Dick Vitale
During the past month and a half, I have had a very difficult time with discomfort in my throat. Personally, I want to apologize to all of the fans and all of the beautiful people at ESPN who have been fantastic to me during my 29 years working at the network.
I have been blessed to have the opportunity to work with so many wonderful people, especially my current teammates, Dan Shulman, Doris Burke, coordinating producer Dan Steir and director Doug Holmes, who have all been so understanding and supportive.
The past six weeks have been very emotional me and for my family as we've visited some of the most outstanding throat specialists. Fortunately, I am currently under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Deems in Sarasota, FL and he is an outstanding ear, nose and throat specialist. Dr. Deems strongly recommended that I visit Dr. Steven Zeitels, who is recognized as one of the premier throat and voice specialists in the nation.
Dr. Zeitels serves as the director for the Center for Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Rehabilitation at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. After an examination, it was determined that I had lesions on my left vocal cord and that they should be surgically removed. Dr. Zeitels said his goal is to have me back sitting at courtside in early February.
There is nothing professionally that I love better than sharing insights about the players and coaches that make college basketball so unique. I can't wait to get back with all my colleagues at ESPN. Visiting college campuses and interacting with the fans has kept me so young and energized. I can't wait to get back out there, having a blast with all of you, who are so vital to our game.
I am so proud to have started at ESPN back in 1979, where I have met so many beautiful people who have been so kind and fair to me and my family. Now more than ever, I have seen how special the people at ESPN are, starting with president George Bodenheimer, as they have genuinely been fantastic to me in dealing with this little bump in the road.
Once again, happy holidays to each and every one of you. Thanks so much for your tremendous support during my tenure with ESPN. I will be updating my Web site with basketball tidbits concerning the various teams, players and coaches during my rehabilitation process. This is already a dynamite hoop season and I cannot wait for March Madness.

I think if you polled every Michigan fan in here and asked their feeling about basketball and then polled every Michigan State fan in here about football that Glenn would be dead on.

-Smith Dismissed From Men’s Basketball Program
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan men’s basketball coach John Beilein announced today (Friday, Dec. 28) junior guard Jerret Smith (Romulus, Mich./Romulus HS) has been dismissed from the Wolverine program.“We have certain expectations of the student-athletes in our basketball program,” said Beilein. “After over a month of evaluation and discussion, our coaching staff has decided that Jerret has not made sufficient effort to meet these expectations. Therefore, it is in the best interest of the future of our basketball program that we move in a different direction.”

Print (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=3207552&type=story)Defense may win championships, but it didn't do Saint Louis a bit of good two Thursdays ago at George Washington. Missing 23 straight shots and going 54 minutes of real time between baskets will do that to you.
"If you told me before the game that we would hold any team to 49 points on the road, I'd say we'd have a great chance to win that game," Saint Louis assistant coach Paul Biancardi said. "You wouldn't think you'd lose by 30."
That's the land of absurdity the Billikens entered with their shot clock-era record-low 20-point performance. The irony is that the school's mascot is a good-luck figure representing "things as they ought to be." Someone better check the warranty, because 7-for-48 shooting is neither lucky nor offense as it ought to be.
The real-life Billikens can take a bit of solace, though. Plenty of other teams have taken a run at history in this season of clank.
On Dec. 29, Penn set a shot clock-era low for a half with six points at Florida Gulf Coast. That mark barely lasted a week before Savannah State stole the crown with a four-point half at Kansas State that prompted chants of "mercy basket" from the Wildcats' fans.
Such misery hasn't been discriminatory, though. At the big-boy level, NC State posted a 13-point first half in a blowout loss at rival North Carolina, while Michigan State, in a gruesome seven-point loss at Iowa, went 18-18-36 -- par on many miniature golf courses, but way below par for a top-10 team.
When did THAT happen????
Phffff. Bush league shit.
Jethro34 01-22-2008, 10:00 PM Michigan played tough tonight. Only lead at 6-5, but had it tied up at 53 with 4 minutes to go before losing by 3 to #11 Wisconsin on the road. Would have been a huge win.
Maybe NOT getting the win will keep them pissed and they can stay in the game against State for 3 or 4 minutes.

WTFchris 01-30-2008, 12:56 PM I don't get the buzz around Drake. They are a 5 seed in that, a 4 seed on ESPN. Their only quality win is against Crieghton? Wow.
EDIT- they also beat Iowa, who beat MSU and racked up the rest of their 10 wins against patsies.
Jethro34 01-30-2008, 01:01 PM The nature of college basketball is to hype any school whose name could be a first or last name. Example = Duke. Drake fits the profile as well.
Who doesn't fit the profile? Sadly, Gonzaga. Though I would be a big fan of someone named Gonzaga Jones, or Jimmy Gonzaga.
Darth Thanatos 02-20-2008, 12:02 AM Dickey Nutt, the coach for Arkansas State is resigning and there will be co-interim coaches.
LOL DICKEY NUTT
Timone 02-20-2008, 12:07 AM That's not as funny as the fact that I was playing NCAA Football 08 and some team I played had a QB that was named Barry Dingle. Swear to God.
Darth Thanatos 02-20-2008, 11:50 PM The U have played themselves back in the tourney by beating Duke for the 1st time since 1962.
Glenn 03-15-2008, 02:18 PM I can't believe that the SEC is going to make these teams play two games today.
Georgia could be looking at 3 games in a 24 hour span.
I've seen some talking heads suggest that they just declare co-champions and cancel the championship game, but then what happens to the automatic bid?
FillyCheezeSteak 03-15-2008, 09:19 PM I heard that if there are co-champions and they cancel the title game they lose their automatic bid. It is a very unfortunate situation, but it was a freak incident and not something that happens all the time. I think that if a team like Georgia won the whole SEC they definitely would be deserving of it.
Glenn 03-17-2008, 10:08 AM Thread unstuck.
What a wild ride it was.
