Timone 11-15-2007, 03:14 PM It was courageous of Wade to get wheeled off the court and have everyone laugh at him. Zekyl 11-15-2007, 05:36 PM It was courageous of Wade to get wheeled off the court and have everyone laugh at him. I believe that's what those in the business refer to as: UBER-COURAGE!!!!!!!!! :dismissed: Glenn 11-16-2007, 01:19 PM D-WADE courageously calls out Shaq... Wade calls on Shaq to lead Heat out of tailspin ESPN.com news services Updated: November 16, 2007, 12:15 PM ET The Miami Heat and larger-than-life center are Shaquille O'Neal are stuggling at 1-7. Coach Pat Riley is looking for answers, blaming himself and suggesting "massive lineup changes" are afoot if things don't turn around. Newspaper columnists in South Florida are calling for Shaq to be taken out of the starting lineup, to send a message to the Big Aristotle and the rest of the team. But the Heat's best player, Dwyane Wade, says the key to getting Shaq and the Heat back on track is for O'Neal to get back the eye of the tiger. "Probably this year more so than any year I have been more vocal with Shaq, talking to him and trying to motivate him," Wade told reporters on Thursday. "But the main thing is Shaq has got to be self-motivated. He has got to be willing and ready to do it." O'Neal's numbers are down and he has struggled with foul trouble as the Heat stumbled out of the gate. In the first half of Miami's loss to the previously winless Seattle SuperSonics, he played just four minutes due to foul trouble and scattered boos from the home crowd serenaded him to the bench. He finished with 10 points, three boards and three turnovers in 16 minutes in the loss. "Even though he is not getting the ball as much as he wants, we need him to help lead this team in other ways, whether it's rebounding the ball or passing the ball the way he knows how to pass," Wade told reporters. "He's our leader, [along] with myself. When you hear about the Miami Heat, it's Shaq and D-Wade. A lot is on us to lead the team and we have got to find a way to do it." For his part, Riley said he's "as culpable as anyone else" for the team's slow start. But he's not laying all the blame at Shaq's feet. "I don't want to embarrass anybody, and I have never done that with guys who are in the rotation and are key producers and have been around," Riley told reporters. "I just have too much compassion for them because I know they are going to have their ups and downs and there is a lot of pressure for them to perform. I understand. "There is only one factor that will make me change that. I will give you the benefit of the doubt as long as we are winning. That's cool. But if the results are that there are continued losses, then it can't be tolerated." O'Neal, 35, is averaging 14.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game -- well below his career averages of 25.9 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. He's coming off his least-productive season statistically, one in which he was hampered by injuries, and he is dealing with the upheaval of a divorce. The Heat started the season without Wade, who returned to the lineup in the Seattle game and could start against the undefeated Celtics on Friday night. They're averaging just 84.8 points per game -- dead last in the NBA -- and ESPN.com's John Hollinger has them 25th out of 30 NBA teams in his power rankings. Gotta love how he refers to himself as "D-Wade". Timone 11-16-2007, 01:22 PM Motivate Shaq? Not even a month in? Uh, good luck with that. Courageous effort nonetheless. Big Swami 11-16-2007, 02:34 PM You can't just tell a fat person that they need more motivation. It's more complex than that. Timone 11-16-2007, 02:37 PM Oh I agree completely. Big Swami 11-18-2007, 12:07 AM I'm going to have to ask people to stop posting pics of Dwyane Wade. I'm starting to gag a little. Uncle Mxy 11-18-2007, 01:28 AM D-Wade courageously shot 20 FTs to lead the Heat to victory. He had to shoot them granny style because he still can't get out of the wheelchair except for short spurts. Timone 11-18-2007, 01:30 AM Change this to "The Official Dwyane Wade Thread" and sticky it. Glenn 11-18-2007, 07:14 AM D-Wade's new nickname: Team Savior By Sean Deveney - Sporting News Shaquille O'Neal is 35 years old. That is not going to change, at least not until March. That's when he'll turn 36. Smush Parker has grated on every coach he has played for, going back to his days at Fordham. That's not going to change. Ricky Davis, of course, once tried to get himself a triple double by intentionally missing a shot and getting the rebound. Safe to say, he'll always be prone to bad decisions. Go down the list -- Dorell Wright's inconsistency, Jason Williams' bum wheel, Penny Hardaway's knee problems -- and just about every name in the Heat lineup has some sort of significant flaw attached. Miami has a bad roster, so it should come as no surprise that it produced a bad preseason (0-7) and a bad early season (1-7). In their first seven regular season games, the Heat averaged 83.3 points. There's no need to wonder what was wrong with this group. Quite simply, the Heat missed their savior, Dwyane Wade, and the 23.8 points per game he has averaged during his career. But Wade's impact on the team is bigger than just the number of points he scores. He draws double-teams, giving teammates wide-open shots. He's the go-to guy, a trait that extends beyond fourth quarter production. Wade is the guy the Heat turn to when the offense fails and the shot clock is running low. He's a great bail-out option. Miami is resting its hopes on Wade's return from shoulder and knee surgeries last May. Wade played for the first time this season on Wednesday night, and he scored 15 points in 24 minutes. Still, Wade's presence couldn't prevent the Heat, at home, from losing to the previously winless Sonics. Wade says his shoulder is fine, but he probably isn't 100 percent. No matter. Miami needs him, even at 80 percent. It needs Wade to overshadow O'Neal's deteriorating performance, it needs Wade to make up for the bad decisions of his teammates, it needs Wade to cover up Riley's bungling of the team's roster. Wade's presence can mask the Heat's many defects, and thanks to his return, Miami will return to its status as one of the better teams in the East -- probably not the league champ it was two years ago but a very good team nonetheless. The problem is, you have to wonder how much longer Wade will want to do this. The Superman role wears on players. (Kobe Bryant, anyone?) Wade was on the bench in a suit for the opening games this season, giving him an up-close view of his teammates' follies. That was a mistake on Riley's part. He should have kept Wade as far from this mess as possible. Sitting on the bench, Wade had a view of his future, with Shaq fading and with -- well, who else? Udonis Haslem, a nice role player. But can Wade be excited about a future in which Parker is his point guard and Wright is the No. 2 option? Or one with Mark Blount in the middle? The roster mess is justified by the 2005-06 championship. At that time, it was clear the Heat were selling out the future to win in the present. The consequence of that is what's on the floor these days. Wade will probably save this group from oblivion, but keep in mind, when he signed a contract extension in 2006, he was sure to include an opt-out clause after the '09-10 season. He can be a free agent then. The Heat will have two seasons to show Wade he'll have some decent talent to work with in Miami. The Heat stink. Wade can change that this season. But the team had better take some steps to ensure it's not this bad for long, or Wade won't be around to rescue them. Matt 11-24-2007, 02:58 PM "Don't listen to those WTFD bullies, D-Wade." I mean, I gotta turn down the heat...yeah... Timone 11-24-2007, 04:12 PM Dwyane Wade's tears cure cancer. That's why he was crying as he was being wheeled off the court.
