View Full Version : Why does America/Media love ______?

I figured we could have a thread on this focusing on certain players that get way too much respect from the media/fans/ESPN and debate as to why they selected that player to circle jerk around.

You know this happens all the time: the media picks out a player that we're supposed to have a huge man-crush on and then floods our televisions with him. This player can be an average player or a terrific player, it usually doesn't matter, but we see way too much coverage of him and are expected to love him.

So let's get it started!

(I'll swat this quickly if this thread doesn't get any man-love)

Why does America love: Grady Sizemore?

The guy by all accounts is an average hitter and a good (not great) center fielder.

Here are his stats from last year:
SEASON TEAM G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
2007 Cle 162 628 118 174 34 5 24 78 101 155 33 10 .277 .390 .462 .852

Compare it to Granderson who gets much, much less love:
SEASON TEAM G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
2007 Det 158 612 122 185 38 23 23 74 52 141 26 1 .302 .361 .552 .913

Ooh, good example.

Although I must say that Curtis gets a lot of face time, too.

He was everywhere during the playoffs.

I'm having a hard time coming up with guys that aren't superstars, but Sizemore is a good one.

The Dallas Cowboys.

They were "America's Team" back in the 90's and they weren't much different than the Jailblazers were (yes, some guys like Aikman and Smith stayed out of trouble).

So they have nice cheerleaders. I still never understood why a team filled with drug addicts, abusers and show boaters became america's team.

Fuckin' Yankees. Can anyone explain this to me? Anyone? Their uniforms are boring, the players are overpaid and have no personality, all they do is repeatedly fail to win pennants despite the insane amount of money that's pumped into them. They're like the official baseball team of the Third Reich.

The obvious example is Notre Dame. The media and Notre Dame alums (and of course, the Big 10, which seems to be still hoping) love this program, yet I defy you to find more than 14 "regular guys" who wouldn't mind if South Bend Indiana was wiped off the map in some bizarre exploding pig/cold fusion experiment gone awry.

Gilbert Arenas. Not saying the guy doesn't have a game, but critics seem to put him in the highest echelon of guys, and he hasn't earned it. There are superstars and there are good scorers. Gilbert is a good scorer.

And he needs to stop blogging.

They've only won a single national title haven't they? I wonder what % of their wins are against the armed forces schools and what % are against real schools.

I'll try to answer some of these. Most are just simply how good they 'used' to be.

Dallas Cowboys. The franchise has won. Its above average thats for sure, but I'd say it has to do with Tom Landry. I don't know a lot about him but he sure carried himself as a honorable man. It stuck. Then JJ and JJ came in and the honor may have left but the winning started again. And Roger Staubach, Bob Lilly, Randy White, Tony Dorsett or any other Ring of Fame member.

New York Yankess. Again, its winning history and the characters that played for that team. Billy Martin, Yoggi, Joe Dimagio, Reggie Jackson. Now GS will pay anything for any player. They still get air time, but sometimes I do think that there are as many watching the Yankess hoping they crumble as there are that want them to win.

Notre Dame -- History and characters. Knute Rockne, Aera Parseghian

I realize the characters have left and the winning has left in some cases so why do they still get the air time is a good question. But just some thoughts.

I'm tired of writting. I hate writting so I'm just going to stop

Not a player, but is there a more unlikeable TV personality than Sean Salisbury? He's the epitome of the cocky quarterback character in a lot of high school football movies.

I have another example, but in a different light: JJ Reddick.

He hasn't done a thing in the pros. However we keep seeing updates on him and people keep asking "Is this the year JJ Reddick" steps up.

Here's my answer to that: he's a bust! Come on. I understand he might have been the greatest college shooter of all time, but that doesn't translate into NBA talent. He's too short, too small, too dumb. Get over it.

Why does Stephen A. Smith love Shaq, Allen Iverson, and Tim Duncan?
