I was reading about the Hurricanes moving to Dolphins Stadium, about the Marlins maybe moving to the Orange Bowl site, and it got me curious about the rest of their arenas. I thought the Panthers were in Miami Arena, but it is completely vacant. Sure, we have that problem in Detroit with Tiger stadium, but Miami Arena was built in 1988!

It must have been pretty bad for them to build American Airlines and the Panthers to move all the way out to a new place in the suburbs (like an hour away).

It seems like people would design a building to be used for more than 20 years. It's crazy how fast we build new stadiums/ballparks/arenas.

I think the reason is how the owners of the franchises hold the taxpayers hostage. They know the fans don't want to lose their teams. They know the city councils don't want to lose revenue from having a sports team. And who 'generally' foots the bill, the taxpayer.

We can criticize Ford Sr, but not for Ford Field, iirc, he payed for most of that stadium.

Let's not forget the Silverdome...

IIRC, part of the reason Miami Arena suffered was that it was pathetic in comparison to the Palace. They cheaped out on luxury seating, created a nice '70s era stadium that was obsolete on day 1.

Let's not forget the Silverdome...

The City of Pontiac recently awarded a purchase bid of the Silverdome to InspireVision for $30,000,000. The faith based group plans to use the Silverdome as a "family entertainment center". Events they wish to bring include Family Shows, Sporting Events, Concerts, Action Sports, Festivals, Conventions, and TV Productions. While agreements have not been finalized as of November 9th, 2007, InspireVision is selling shares for the Silverdome. For $100 each you will receive benefits as long as you are a shareholder. Shareholder benefits include $10.00 prices on concert tickets, a wellness program, and savings on a food distribution system. Negotiations are still being worked out with the City of Pontiac and the whole deal at this point is tentative but is expected to go through.

Yeah, there is the silverdome, but it was built in the 70's and in the suburbs as well. I can understand the desire to move back to the city and all. Miami Arena was built in 88, and they build AA like 12 years later. That's a pretty poor shelf life. At least we used the dome for something like 25 years.

In terms of crappy stadiums, I think the White Sox stadium is pretty lame for being built in the 90's. I bet that thing won't last another 20 years.
