View Full Version : Jason Hanson appreciation thread
WTFchris 11-05-2007, 03:23 PM In case you didn't know, Hanson just became the 10th leading scorer all time in the NFL with 1605 career points. Here are the numbers prior to the start of the year (active players starred):
1. Morten Anderson* - 2,437
2. Gary Anderson - 2,434
3. George Blanda - 2,002
4. John Carney* - 1,749
5. Norm Johnson - 1,736
6. Matt Stover* - 1,715
7. Nick Lowrey - 1,711
8. Jan Stenerud - 1,699
9. Jason Elam* - 1,672
10. Eddie Murray - 1,594
11. Al Del Greco - 1,584
12. Jason Hanson* - 1,537
13. Steve Christie - 1,476
14. Pat Leahy - 1,470
15. Jim Turner - 1,439
16. Matt Bahr - 1,422
17. Mark Moseley - 1,382
18. Jim Bakken - 1,380
19. Fred Cox - 1,365
20. Lou Groza - 1,349
Also interesting facts about Hanson is that he's the only player to be still playing for the team he was drafted by 15 years ago. The only other player who has been with his team 15 years is Favre (who was drafted by Atlanta). He has only missed 1 game in his career.
Glenn 11-05-2007, 03:36 PM I would claim that he is underappreciated, but he was probably the team MVP last 6 or 7 years, at least.
Hats off to you, Mr. Hanson!

Tahoe 11-05-2007, 04:03 PM Congrats. I hope the team can catch up to the qulity of player he is.
Zekyl 11-05-2007, 05:42 PM So where do we think he is going to end up on that list?
WTFchris 11-05-2007, 05:49 PM Well, he is on pace for 136 points this year, and had 117 in Martz' offense last year. I'm sure he can kick effectively for another 3-5 years at least, which would be another 300-600 points roughly. That would put him 3rd basically. He would probably need 7 seasons more to get #1 or #2. At age 37, I'm not sure whether he has that in him or not. Anderson is still kicking at age 47. Hanson has a higher point per season average, so it is possible.
Zekyl 11-05-2007, 05:52 PM He averages 102.5 points per season before this season, so if he plays 3 more years with that average (including this year, he already has 68), he would top 1800.
Zekyl 11-05-2007, 05:54 PM Chris, you failed to take into account the guys that are still active. If everyone retired right now I'd say 3rd was a serious goal, but Elam, Stover and Carney are still out there kicking.

Stover is 39
Carney is 43
Elam is 37
Hanson is well ahead of the pace of Carney and Stover. Elam has about a 100 point edge on Hanson, and a good kicking environment too in Denver. Being the same age I have to give Elam a slight edge there. So, realistically you are looking at the 4th/5th all time spot, even if he only plays another 3-5 years. If he plays into his middle 40's then he has a legit chance at the top.
Tahoe 11-05-2007, 06:12 PM Interesting looking at that list, if I'm correct, there is no tie from top fg kickers being on top teams. Not that a top team can't have a great kicker. Hanson has played on some real dogshit teams.
WTFchris 11-05-2007, 06:15 PM It's probably because top teams are scoring TD's and crap teams stall out in the redzone and rely on FG's. Look at Stover and Hanson. Their teams have been notorius for stalling offenses.
mercury 11-05-2007, 07:20 PM Blanda was also a QB... he played 26 years... which is really amazing considering the abuse he took.
If you can run, you can kick a ball... nothing but a rare permanent kickers injury should stop a kicker if he choses to continue his career... especially with today's physical technology... I think we'll see a 60 year old kicker.
Hanson is a great open field tackler... he has saved TD numerous times... he's not afraid to stick his nose in there... this may shorten his career.
I'd like to add that this site has the most intellegent posters of Pistons... er sports in the area.... brainiac mofos :^)

Yeah, Elam is the one I'm really worried about. The others I think he should end his career ahead of.

We are the leaders. And best.
