Yes MSU played like shit.

Does it really have any bearing on the season - No. Exhibition game where the frosh play tons of minutes = not legit.

Not how I wanted MSU to start the season, but don't make this out to be something it's not.

Appy St. kicked UM out of the NC picture. GVSU kicked MSU in the pants, but no real effect.

Division II Grand Valley State shocks No. 8 Spartans in double OT

Associated Press
Updated: November 3, 2007, 1:42 AM ET

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Division II Grand Valley State stunned No. 8 Michigan State, the Big Ten favorite, 85-82 in two overtimes Friday night in an exhibition game.

Jason Jamerson had 19 points for the Lakers, while Justin Ringler had 16, including a three-point play at the end of regulation. Callistus Eziukwu of Grand Valley State had eight of his 15 points in the second overtime.

The Spartans shouldn't have been shocked at the loss since they trailed the Lakers for more than 38 minutes before escaping with a win last season. This time, Grand Valley controlled the game for most of its 50 minutes.

The Lakers, an Elite Eight team last March, rallied from a 65-63 deficit in the final 15 seconds of regulation and were down 75-71 in the last minute of the first overtime. Grand Valley State never trailed in the second overtime.

Chris Allen led Michigan State with 15 points, while fellow freshman Kalin Lucas had 12. Drew Neitzel, the preseason Big Ten Player of the Year, failed to score until a 3-pointer bounced in with 13:43 left in the second half. Neitzel finished with 12 points but was just 3-for-15 from the field.

The Lakers finished with a 44-41 rebounding edge and a 27-12 advantage from 3-point range.

The night began with a pep rally for the Michigan State football team on the eve of its matchup with archrival Michigan. Coach Mark Dantonio and co-captain Travis Key spoke to the sellout crowd before the coaches and players formed a tunnel to welcome the basketball team.

Appy St. kicked UM out of the NC picture. GVSU kicked MSU in the pants, but no real effect.

Not that I'm trying to make this out to be a big deal, because it's not, but that's the difference between College Football and College Basketball. The two cannot be compared.

MSU can lose to GVSU during the regular season, and still win the NC. Michigan can't lose to anyone without giving up NC hopes. That's why I will always say the football National Championship is so much harder to attain.

Back to the subject at hand, MSU is fine. Michigan fans should not pretend this loss is as big as the App. State loss. It makes us look ignorant.

Well, I think that this loss is definitely similar to UM losing to Appalachian State. However, I think this will serve as a fine wake up call for the team and I expect Izzo to make all the neccesary corrections. Also, although this certainly was an embarrassing loss, it was only an exhibition game and, thankfully, college basketball doesn`t operate within the same ridiculous parameters (one loss no NC) as college football. This team will be a damn tough out in the tournament.

Have your laughs now troglodytes. This team will be ready as hell come the Big Ten season and the blue and yellow houseworkers will not enjoy their time in East Lansing.

In regards to last night I would say, the green and white over-confident, under-prepared players who learned a valuable lesson about not believing their own hype and that every team can beat them if they do not prepare, execute and play with intensity. So, no, I would not say the "green and white pussies" because, well, that moniker is all blue and yellow.

It's not like the GVSU starters beat up on State's jicks either. Neitzel and crew got major minutes and Mr. "Lights out" himself took the last shot and Sparty could not pull it out.

Izzo kicks players out of locker room after Grand Valley loss

November 6, 2007
By SHANNON SHELTON
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

Let’s take a short break from the tempest brewing in the Michigan State football program to review the basketball team’s slip-up against Grand Valley State last Friday.

MSU coach Tom Izzo spoke to the media on Monday evening about his team’s 85-82 double overtime exhibition loss to the Lakers and the upcoming exhibition game against Michigan Tech on Wednesday.

He reiterated that a combination of odd lineups – such as one where Drew Neitzel, Travis Walton and freshmen Kalin Lucas, Durrell Summers and Chris Allen were all on the floor at the same time in the last 15 seconds – and a failure to execute consistently resulted in the poor play on MSU’s part, although he complimented Grand Valley’s effort.

“Yeah, I probably experimented too much,” Izzo said.

After the loss, Izzo decided to temporarily kick the players out of their brand-new locker room. Members of the media got to see the Spartans’ new digs after the game and they look better than some NBA locker rooms, complete with comfortable couches, a high-tech television with a video-game system and a kitchen area.

“I just look at that as, you earn the right to have something that nice, and we didn’t earn the right,” Izzo said. “I just said that, make sure that everything including the toothbrushes are out of there.”

Over the last few days, players have dressed in the weight room, or in hallways. Izzo said he’ll decide when to let them back in based on their practice or game-time performance.

Although the game won’t show up on MSU’s record, the nature of the loss by a top-10 team to a Division II squad made the Spartans the brunt of national jokes. The game got prominent play on ESPN, and the broadcasters compared it to U-M’s loss in football to Appalachian State.

But Izzo appeared to take it all in stride, saying he'd continue to continue to tinker with lineups against Michigan Tech, but would work more on those combinations in practice. Getting better defensive play from the bigs will also be a focus, he said.

I'm surprised to hear Izzo was a lil upset, as it was explained over and over here on the board that this was 'just an exibition game'.

I think it was obvious to most anyone that he wasn't upset that they lost, it was how they lost. He was pissed that they didn't bring good effort. He WANTED the game to be close. I wouldn't say that he wanted them to lose, that would be a lie...but he wanted the game to be close. He wouldn't have invited GVSU's coach to attend MSU's practices prior to the game and he wouldn't have prevented his players from having any scouting reports of GVSU...if he didn't. He also wouldn't have called a TO with his team up 3 and the ball in Neitzel's hand as the clock was ticking down and a foul was inevitable if it was a normal game and a "W" was his primary goal.

The only differences btwn UM's loss to Kent State and MSU's loss to GVSU was MSU's loss was televised and UM's wasn't. Both games meant absolutely nothing though.

Kentucky lost to Gardner-Webb...so it's not like MSU's loss is that bad anymore...

then again Gardner-Webb was at least Div 1

Point of note: Kentucky's game actually counted. IMO it's far FAR more embarrasing and unacceptable to lose a regular season game to a crappy Div 1 opponent than to lose an exhibition game to a very good (or very bad) Div 2 team.

One game you're experimenting with rotations and substitution patterns just trying to get ready for opening day and the other game you're pulling out all the stops just trying to get the W. Big diff IMO.

Random observation/question:

If this game was "meaningless" and "didn't count", then why did MSU drop several places in the national rankings?

Because there are some national guys that are just as dumb and uninformed as some of the dipshits in here. Just fei, last night's game counted. MSU is 1-0, not 2-1. So someone please explain to me how MSU didn't look like a top 10 team last night.

Differences from the regular season and the exhibition season that show that Izzo was still experimenting with lineups and rotations and wasn't overly concerned with dominating the games.

Lucas starting over Walton
Dahlman, Herzog, Thornton and Ibok out of the regular rotation.

If Izzo really wanted to win those games, he would've made these changes for game 1 of the exhibition season. But he didn't...so what does that (along with everything else that he did in the exhibiton season) tell those with the gift of common sense?

Winning those games wasn't the primary goal and some of the wolverine posters in here have the basketball IQ of a pile of shit. :)

Good luck against Georgetown, Butler, Duke and UCLA.

I understand and appreciate all of that, but I think the reality is that all games count when you are being judged by an outside party (selection committee) even if they are "exhibitions".

I also disagree with the general notion (not yours, specifically Jack) that Izzo was indifferent or didn't care about that game. He's a competitor and unless you think that "locking the players out of the lockerroom" thing was a publicity stunt, that loss hurt.

Good luck against Georgetown (L), Butler (L), Duke(L) and UCLA(L).

Michigan doesn't need luck.

I can't believe this game is being debated like this.

The loss was and is and embarrassment.

The lack of effort hurt (which was why they were kicked out of the locker room, and just so you know the idea to kick the team out of their new digs was actually the brainchild of the two captains, Walton and Neitzel...not Izzo).

They weren't expelled because they lost. The loss was somewhat understandable considering everything that was involved (ie. no gameplanning, limited playbook, injuries, lineup experimentation, etc...).

No they were jetisoned because they didn't bring acceptable offort for a MSU team.

GVSU had the same issues. It was the begining of the season for both, it was an "exibition" game for both.

MSU got beat, plain and simple.

You may or may not know that what you just said was biased bullshit...but since it's the season of giving and thanks and all, I'll let you go on believing that you have a clue as to what you're talking about.

Nice post Tahoe:) You can tell you know your stuff! lol

I can't believe this loss is being discussed at all. It's basektball. You can lose thirty three percent of your games during a regualr season and make the playoffs (tournament). This loss maters about as much as the mite crawling on my asshair right now.
Which is about as much as basketball means as a sport.
The only thing that matters is football. College football. The people that like basketball only like it because their football team is a bunch of fags. People like that are called "Izzo fans".

Exhibition season is over, isn't it? Tonight's game is regular season for UM, I thought.
Exhibition was for SVSU, a school I am NOT simply a Wal-Mart fan of.
