DETROIT -- Joel Zumaya will miss the first part of the 2008 season recovering from right shoulder surgery.

Zumaya was moving personal items after the wildfires that affected areas near his San Diego home, and suffered an injury that required AC joint reconstruction. The surgery was performed Wednesday, and was announced by the Tigers today.

The Tigers said that Zumaya will have to rest his shoulder for the next six weeks, and will begin a throwing program in approximately four months. That would be during spring training, and the Tigers say they're hopeful Zumaya would be ready to pitch sometime during the 2008 season.

Zumaya missed much of the 2007 season with a right finger problem that required surgery.

The Tigers were counting on Zumaya, either as a setup man for Todd Jones, or possibly as a closer if Jones were to leave as a free agent.

Fair enough... but I think the Tigers are willing to spend. So I doubt that's an issue.

And that we traded away a pitching prospect? Then again, Jair wasn't a bullpen guy anyway, but any minor league starter can be moved to the major league bullpen, we've done it many times.

Francisco Cordero and Scott Linebrink combined would cost less than than just Mo Rivera...

I'd rather get the 2 for one special and bring back Jonesy as well...

Na...the best relievers that are FA's are Mariano Rivera, Octavio Dotel, Eric Gagne, Francisco Cordero, Dave Riske, Al Reyes, Luis Vizcaino, Scott Linebrink, Todd Jones...


Trevor Hoffman has a team option likely to be exercised

Joe Borowski has a team option, which I would suspect will be exercised despite his 70+ ERA...

Lidge could be traid bait...so could Brian Fuentes from Colorado now that Corpas will be the closer

I don't know a couple of those names, but every one is probably better than Jones (except Gagne sucked balls after he got traded).
