NBA cuts roundup: Rockets cut Sura, Lucas

HOUSTON -- Guards Bob Sura and John Lucas III were among four players cut by the Houston Rockets on Monday, the eve of their season opener.

Forwards Jackie Butler and Justin Reed were also released as the team reduced its roster to 15 players.

The 6-foot-5 Sura has been plagued by back and knee injuries almost since the day he signed with Houston in 2004. He missed the 2005-06 season after arthroscopic knee surgery. Two months later, he had surgery to fix a herniated disk in his back.

The 34-year-old Sura also sat out last season as the back injury lingered. The former Florida State star averaged 8.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 10 NBA seasons.

The 5-11 Lucas, son of former Rocket John Lucas, appeared in 60 regular-season games over the past two seasons and averaged 3.1 points. Lucas had an outside shot but a defensive liability because of his height. And when the Rockets acquired point guards Mike James and Steve Francis in the offseason, the release of Lucas seemed inevitable.

Miami also cut four scrubs (guard Brian Chase and forwards Devin Green, Jeremy Richardson and Marcus Slaughter) meaning Penny made the squad.

Are you serious? I always though Simien could be a very servicable big man in the future... definitely didn't think Minnesota would cut him.

It's Flip's fault.

realgm said we waived dupree too. hmm... even though i said pistons should have got butler rather than nazr, and the spurs just waived butler, i still think i was right. we definitly would waive nazr if we didnt have to eat his giant K.

This is probably Sura's last day as an NBA player. I bet Plastic Man Augmon lands on a team somewhere, though.

Some solid young players out there. Simien, Butler, Byars, Marcus Williams.

Does anyone out there honestly think Dupree is as good as Byars? Or even close for that matter?

He was suppose to go late first round.

I was thikning we draft crittenton with the 15 and take byars with the 27. I'd cut both dup and sammy and pick up byars

Marcus Williams as in 2nd or 3rd year PG Marcus Williams? Wasn't he a high first round pick?

I think he means the player out of Arizona drafted by the spurs i Think

The Nets extended the PG Marcus Williams. If they hadn't, I'd be first in the "waive Lindsey Hunter and get Marcus signed up" line. Of course, I wish we would just waive Lindsey and sign Boykins, or darn near anyone else. But what would JD do without his spies in the locker room...

Why would those guys come here to sit behind Stuckey and Flip?

I'd flip Flip and call Stuckey an undersized Wade-like 2 with a nice handle. :)

How did Darius Washington make the Spurs??? He left Memphis way to early...

and tell me it's not a little "strange" that Coby Karl makes the Lakers...do you think George made a little deal w/ Phil as to that decision???
