View Full Version : getting big hdtv, need help
b-diddy 10-23-2007, 12:24 AM ok, im not, but my roommate is. he actually bought a 50 inch plasma 720 p. seemed run of the mill for what it is (not a huge tech expert, though i do know p from i).
anyway, i think he paid ~1400-1500. not exactly a steel, and considering best buy cant deliever before the 7th of november, i think it was kind of a worst buy.
so i looked online at amazon and found this:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HLT6187S-Slim-Engine-1080p/dp/B000N53TDM/ref=sr_1_5/002-7703517-5802416?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1193113103&sr=1-5
is it just me or is that tv too good to be true? wouldnt my roommate be a fool not to go with this? quicker help the better, cuz i want my roommate to cancel his purchase and go with this, but i want a little ammo from a tech expert to roll with before i make my argument.
RegicideGreg 10-23-2007, 12:44 AM Agreed that is a pretty good deal if he is willing to shell out some more $$ for a better TV. Basically anytime amazon won't show you the price without clicking it's a pretty solid deal. plus samsung has a good track record in my book 1080p>720p
Mr. Oobir 10-23-2007, 02:17 AM It depends on if he can deal with a projection TV or if he wants a flat panel. Some people just plain don't want another large TV like the Samsung. Also, the room in which it will be placed may not be large enough for comfortable viewing on a 61" TV, especially a projection screen with a comparatively narrow viewing angle. But, yeah, that's probably a better overall TV than what he ordered, and would be a better bet if he could deal with its shortcomings. Projection TVs can be fixed if their bulbs go out (a plasma TV would need replacement), save money on electricity bills, and tend to be better quality than similarly priced plasmas. 1080p isn't too important, but that can't hurt.
robcat911 10-23-2007, 11:33 PM If I may chime in. I have a 50 inch Samsung DLP. Its about 2 years old now and iv had no problems with it. Its about 8 inches deep, so if your not going to wall mount your LCD or Plasma then its about the same.
One advantage to DLP as was mentioned before is they bulb system. So you can replace your bulb every 5-6 years and your TV is like the day you bought it. Also DLP's dont get burn in. So if you play games on your TV then you dont have to worry about that. Plasma and LCDs can get ruined that way.
In short DLPs deliver a great picture for the price, and have certain advantages over other technologies. But you cant mount it on your wall :-(
i just picked up a 37" 1080p LCD HDTV and i love it. it's a bedroom TV, so the size is great for the dimensions of the room. plus, i got a great deal on it ($500) :)
now, i just need HD content, lol.

WTFchris 10-26-2007, 12:59 PM No shit, that's a steal Matt.
I've been reading about the panel TV's off an on and I want an LCD tv (probably in the 42 inch ballpark, and 1080).
Can't afford it at the moment after just moving, but I'd like to get that next summer.

I've got a 40" Sony 1080p, best thing I ever bought.

hehe, it was an online refurb deal. i really lucked out, because some folks were reporting that their TV's came in bad shape. mine looked brand new and i love it.
also, i just order this HP computer as a home theater pc (HTPC):
http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4198936
it's a smallish PC that will lay flat next to my other TV components. i'm hoping to get OTA HD signals through the TV tuner (local stations) and also fit an HD-DVD plyer inside it. the PC will also store all of the regular DVD movies and TV episodes that i've collected.
btw, it's actually an LCD monitor.....so no TV tuner built into it. basically means that you need something like a Tivo or cable/satellite box receiver to watch TV on it. there's no coaxial cable input like regular TVs have.
