Javon Ringer nearly a Buckeye? If not for a test score, he might have been
October 17, 2007

FREE PRESS NEWS AND STAFF SERVICES

The Buckeyes have a lot going for them right now: a No. 1 ranking, a recent stranglehold on the Michigan-OSU rivalry, success in most of the major collegiate sports ... now imagine them with the only guy, MSU's Javon Ringer, giving Mike Hart a run for his money in the Big Ten rushing title race.

That little bit of fictional thinking was very close to being a reality, according to the Dayton Daily News.

In fact, if not for a test score, Ringer (a former Chaminade-Julienne H.S. star -- C-J is located in Dayton) would probably be assisting the Buckeyes this weekend instead of trying to knock them off of college football's throne.

"It came down to my ACT," Ringer said to the Daily News. "It was taking me a while to get the right score I needed to get in there, and time was running out ... I think everything worked out for the best."

The Buckeyes tried everything they could, including coach Jim Tressel visiting former OSU President Karen Holbrook to try and make an exception. She did not back down.

Ringer was so committed to the Buckeyes at the time, he even turned down the place to be in all of college football: Southern Cal.

"He was in my office when (USC coach) Pete Carroll called," said ex-C-J coach Jim Place, who now coaches at Hamilton High School, to the Daily News. "He didn't take the phone call. He said, 'I'm being recruited by Ohio State, and that's where I want to go. If Ohio State doesn't work out, I'll move on to my next school. That's the way I do things.' "

i would actually LOVE to hear your thoughts on that article about ringer being an act score away from going to THE ohio state university. last time i checked, OSU's standards for entry werent that great, so if OSU wont take him, but msu brings him in with open arms, what does that say?

please dont tell me you think OSU's STUDENT athlete program has higher standards than UM's. i mean, atleast keep it cogent, please.

Marcus Slocum....do you really want to go there? Didn't think so. "Oh here at U of Mum we don't take non-qualifiers." Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-. Or my favorite, "He wasn't the mettle of what Meeechigan Men are made of." Fuck me with a stick that shit's hilarious!!! Jim Harbaugh!! Calling Jim Harbaugh!!!!

and the flaming hypocricy continues:

"To be honest there were a number of people that told him he should reconsider (his commitment to Michigan), including myself," Cooper admitted. "He could have gone to Michigan State or Penn State and just sat out his first year. Michigan wasn't allowing kids to come in that way. That was really the push that both Michigan State and Penn State put on at the end there. They said, 'look, if you commit to Michigan and you don't qualify, they're not going to take you.' So he had that dangling over his head. I and some others were telling him that maybe he should reconsider, especially when it got toward the end of his senior year and it looked like he wasn't going to qualify. But he made up his own mind. He wanted to go to Michigan and decided to go to prep school to work toward getting qualified. To be honest with you, at that time I didn't think it was the best thing for him. Even after putting himself through all of that, there was still the possibility of being really disappointed. Now you have to go to prep school, but what if you don't qualify there?"

Well after he passed the ACT on like attempt #6 (on #5 which was "Incomplete" he said he missed some of it...LOL) he was allowed to play and then he showed his genius going on MySpace calling women (his Mother I think) bitches and ho's and bragging about his capacity for 40 oz'ers. I'll have to check with that discipliarian Lloyd and get back to you. He may be on suspension though I recall he was in the "2-deep" last week. I thought they'd at least sit him for the 1st half of EMU but this must be serious.

Enough said.

He hasn't played any snaps?? He was in that prep school for like two years and they babysat him part of this past year. Got him eligible. Guess they must think he's not any good?

Slocum has played the last few games especially late in the games.

He will be a beast before all is said and done.

Missing from the 2-3 deeps on the Rivals depth chart. 6'-6", 310, 26 years old. He should be a good one.

That "26 years old" can't be right.

edit - he's only 20 years old

He actually went to prep school for 1 year. He was in school at UM last season and red shirted, as he is listed a redshirt freshman.

He actually will not turn 21 until next May.
