The Buckeyes have a lot going for them right now: a No. 1 ranking, a recent stranglehold on the Michigan-OSU rivalry, success in most of the major collegiate sports ... now imagine them with the only guy, MSU's Javon Ringer, giving Mike Hart a run for his money in the Big Ten rushing title race.
That little bit of fictional thinking was very close to being a reality, according to the Dayton Daily News.
In fact, if not for a test score, Ringer (a former Chaminade-Julienne H.S. star -- C-J is located in Dayton) would probably be assisting the Buckeyes this weekend instead of trying to knock them off of college football's throne.
"It came down to my ACT," Ringer said to the Daily News. "It was taking me a while to get the right score I needed to get in there, and time was running out ... I think everything worked out for the best."
The Buckeyes tried everything they could, including coach Jim Tressel visiting former OSU President Karen Holbrook to try and make an exception. She did not back down.
Ringer was so committed to the Buckeyes at the time, he even turned down the place to be in all of college football: Southern Cal.
"He was in my office when (USC coach) Pete Carroll called," said ex-C-J coach Jim Place, who now coaches at Hamilton High School, to the Daily News. "He didn't take the phone call. He said, 'I'm being recruited by Ohio State, and that's where I want to go. If Ohio State doesn't work out, I'll move on to my next school. That's the way I do things.' "
