View Full Version : New Pontiac Commercial: App. St. vs. UM

Anyone happen to catch the new Pontiac commercial? I've seen it three times this morning already. It is basically a fast forward summary of the game finishing with the announcer saying, "ONE OF THE BIGGEST UPSETS IN THE HISTORY OF SPORTS!" Unbelievable, a commercial based on a game. B-Diddy flying in to somehow convince us that this wasn't a monumental upset in 5...4...3...2...

Upset Of The Year (8)
The operative theme for this season: Anything can happen, and will, and the more unlikely it sounds, the more likely it seems to be. When five Top 10 teams lose on a single weekend (Sept. 28-29) and that's not even in the top three most shocking developments of the year, you know it's been nuts.

1. Stanford 24, USC 23 (Oct. 6). As heroic Cardinal receiver Mark Bradford said Sunday, "This feels like Disney really happened to us." Pete Carroll, however, might not share that warm-and-fuzzy feeling after losing to his new nemesis, Jim Harbaugh.

First Harbaugh disclosed last spring that he'd been told this was Carroll's final year at Troy before returning to the NFL. Pete didn't like that. Then Harbaugh said at Pac-10 media day in July that USC might be the best football team ever. Pete didn't like that. Now Harbaugh's team turned a presumed beatdown into the biggest shocker of this or any other century. Don't think Pete liked that much, either.

Duane Burleson/AP Photo

Jerry Moore and the Mountaineers upset Michigan to kick start 2007's crazy ride.

2. Syracuse 38, Louisville 35 (Sept. 22). In its five games other than this one, the Orange averaged 12 points per game -- and lost all five. So scoring 38 and ending the Cardinals' 20-game home winning streak officially qualifies as preposterous. And provides utter condemnation of Louisville (a team The Dash will further condemn below).

3. Appalachian State 34, Michigan 32 (Sept. 2). The game hailed as the new gold standard for upsets couldn't last three weeks without being topped, and couldn't last five without being topped again.

ok, dancing bear, i never said it wasnt a big upset. my point (and not mine alone, other posters actually said this before me) was that ap state loss wasnt as big as people thought, simply cuz app state had some true talent on its team and that michigan was way overrated. you could find dozens of articles saying the exact same thing as what i posted above.

but sparty on tre, youll be missed when you go back into hiding after the next state loss.

Appalachian State is a I AA school. Stanford is a I A school and in the same conference as USC. A surprising victory, but nowhere near Appalachian State over UM. The same with Syracuse and Louisville. That being both are I A schools. Take a look back at Appalachian State`s recruits over the last few year and then look at UM`s. For those who are trying to ameliorate the UM loss to Appalachian Stae by pointing to Stanford/USC and Syracuse/Louisville are deluded to the moon. Facts are facts, jackasses.

FACTS: 1)Appalachian State is a I AA school.

2)Stanford and Syracuse are I A.

3)Stanford is in the same conference as USC.

4)UM has astronomically better recruiting classes than App. State.

5)Appalachian State lost to Wofford

Additionally, Appalachian State beat UM at home. A UM team that was ranked #5 in the preseason polls and thought by many to have a very good chance at the NC.

Anybody that argues that Stanford over USC or Syracuse over Louisville were bigger upsets than freaking APPALACIAN STATE OVER MICHIGAN are either UM homers, biased writers, or they just need to dramatize the story because they are in the media.

That's true too. Until Michigan wins a national championship, this loss is going to be the proverbial "monkey on the back" for every Michigan fan.

I'm tired of hearing about it, so I avoid it as much as possible. But it's still painful when it gets brought up.

If Michigan is not truly elite, then what is the big deal of a Appy State beating them on the national stage.

It is funny that tre changes his tune again. We have had this discussion so many times in the past that if UM football is not elite than neither is MSU basketball.

I am sure you will deny everything and I am not going to pull up posts.

What is elite....being a national power over 50+ years or just being a team that has a nice 10 year run?

I guess MSU hasnt lost yet today or you guys wouldnt be around.

You humps buy all the hype from the Bo-Bo/Canham machine. It's laughable. Why do you think some genius came up with the "Big 2 and the Little 8?" I know it's despicable and they probably don't support the troops. You play in a shit league that discovered the forward pass about a month ago. That crap football with the 3 yards and a cloud of dust plays great in the midwest and then when it was bowl time the other team put nine men on the line and you dopes looked at each other and said "what do we do now??" You took your flogging like the posers you always turned out to be. YOU call yourselves a national power. Go ahead. Everywhere I've ever lived Phoenix, Scottsdale, L.A., Berkley, Seattle, Anchorage, Vancouver Island, and Cape Cod and now here, if anyone KNOWS who you might be they realize it's a running gag about the "Elite of the Elite" (ya. cuz THEY said so...don't you know?) and if you find someone who disagrees..... they WENT TO A2. Good God get over yourselves.....50 years of Regional Superiority? No problemo with that one.

It's because anyone who follows CF a wee bit knows of the inflated self image you gasbags have of yourselves. Certainly not all. But the ones who do go a long way to ruin it for the OBJECTIVE fan. So when the loudmouth who is always flapping jaws about "the leaders of the best" or however that insipid little ditty goes and then segues into the "elite of the elite" rap....well it's pretty funny shit when some school that would fit in Section D of the Great Big High School Field kicks you ass up and down. This issue of fandom seems to drive you batty. I suggest that you reveal your true self: A Michigan grad who hates the typical college football fan. You know, the guy who didn;t go to the school yet roots for them?
Here in Nebraska there are about 1.6 Million Corn fans who didn't, or won't go to Corny University. Why? Because they want to make you mad. And they know they are succeeding.
Take me, for example. I've never even SEEN the University of Michigan (unless you count that time my firends and I went to a football camp there and burned a huge hole in the fifty yard line with a bonfire). And you know what?
I'm proud of my non affiliation! I didn't have to spend 100 grand (like your father did to put you through UM, Joel), and I reap all the benefits of being a UM fan!
For instance:
People laugh at me every year that UM plays Ohio State
People laugh at me every year UM goes to the Rose Bowl (that's alot of laughing, unlike if I was a Michigan State fan)
People laugh at me whenever Lloyd Carr is mentioned in the press
People laugh at me whenever the subject of basketball comes up
People laugh at me whenever the subject of "loses two to three games per year that they should beat the living fuck out of the other team" comes up

Yup, latching onto a "winner"--that's what we UM fans do, and we're proud of it. It's such a thrill watching Michigan drill the Northwesterns of the world, or the Indianas of the world, or the Michigan States of the world (30 of the last 40).

Well, Joel, I think I've taken enough of your time, I now turn the floor over to you, and will patiently wait for three hours to read your witty retort that will go something like this: "Fuckie fuck you damn hell Zip! MSU 5-2 in football.
UM bball is horrible.
UM was preseason Top 5 and lost to Appy then got embarrassed by Oregon.
MSU is Top 10 preseason in bball and favorite to win BT.
Hockey, take it or leave it but we are the defending champions.

Straight up facts. Does the truth hurt Zippy?

MSU 5-2. 5-2 sounds good, but 1-2 in the B10 sucks, with loses to Wisky and NW.

Theres still time to even that out but, imo, MSU better not even be thinking about National polls and try to make a respectable showing in the B10 where they do not have a good record. iirc, its aint gonna get any easier in the weeks ahead for MSU.

UofM preseason...Oregon. The way the season is playing out, losing to Oregon is not embarrassing. Tremendous parity this year. Every week there is a surprising win. It was at our house, but this team is not built to play those type teams. I don't know what our record is against them, but I don't think its good.

Embarrassing = Appy St. Agree.

Oh and UofM BBall is horrible? What makes you say that?

The fallacy in your arguments is saying that MSU basketball PRE SEASON is better than UM football. You have to wait to see where both end up. And saying Sparty football is better than UM basketball is at this point, innaccurate at best, since Sparty Football still has a few games to play.

Now to your overall argument (I like overall, broad terms): UM's athletic department on the whole right now seems to be losing a bit of steam. You are right to point out basketball futility. The hockey team hasn't won an NC since '98, and MSU is defending champion (BTW: I feel hockey is important in the grand picture of an athletic department). But if you go back and look at Final Fours in hockey, Michigan has been to quite a few since last winning an NC, same as MSU basketball.
Since football is Michigan's premier program and basketball is MSU's premeir program, I do feel it's an apt comparison. Again, though, to compare where MSU basketball sits right now to UM football sits is kind of dumb. UM football can right the ship further, MSU bball could flop. We'll see where they end up.
Right now because of the image, MSU basketball is right where Hip says UM football is: Cruise control with pre season rankings. Stick MSU in there at #3-10 every year.
And here's another tidbit: If UM MIRACULOUSLY wins out and wins a bowl game, this is a successful season. Period. Upsets or not. Because I guarantee you that if MSU has a couple upsets, or gets to the NCAA Tourney with a 20-10 record or so, but goes on to make the Final Four, you guys will (rightfully) claim it to have been a great season.
UM football flops more, loses to OSU and a bowl game, then you win.

Losing by 30+ in the Big House when you are a preseason Top 5 team is nothing less than embarrassing. If Michigan is supposed to be one of the best programs in the nation, you don't lose by 30 to anybody at home. Nice attempt to twist it. BTW, the Spartans need 1 more. 1 more and they have a bowl and have a better showing then expected.

Maybe a decade of not even sniffing the postseason combined with losing a big senior group and returning virtually nothing. No true center, not a pg worth a damn on the roster. How's that? Remember I said it, they will be TERRIBLE.

Forgot to add, I view MSU's loss to NW more embarrassing than UofM losing to the Ducks. But thats me. Oregon has some cred.
