Last Meeting: Utah won 100-99 (January 17, 2007)

The skinny: The big stories out of Utah camp are finding a starter at shooting guard and seeing if Andrei Kirilenko can be resurrected. The favorite to start alongside Deron Williams in Utah’s backcourt is Ronnie Brewer, a second-year player and former first-round draft pick whose father had a long NBA career. Others in the running are sweet-shooting rookie Morris Almond, veteran Gordan Giricek and C.J. Miles. Kirilenko is coming off a season in which his production went down drastically across the board, followed up by an emotional meltdown in the playoffs and a summer in which he starred while leading Russia to an unexpected title in Eurobasket, the Olympic qualifying competition, and then said he wanted out of Utah. Ex-Piston Mehmet Okur missed Utah’s preseason opener, a loss to Milwaukee, with cartilage damage to a toe.

What to watch: How do the Pistons’ young players bounce back after squandering an 18-point second-half lead and losing in overtime at Cleveland on Thursday night. It was the first “welcome to the NBA” moment for Rodney Stuckey and Arron Afflalo, who played the entire fourth quarter and overtime and didn’t have as many things go their way as in the opening win over Miami. Nazr Mohammed had to leave Thursday’s game after getting kicked in the calf. If he can’t go, and with Amir Johnson still sidelined by an ankle injury, the Pistons are a little shorthanded up front, which could mean Cheikh Samb gets a few more minutes than he might have expected.

...but we won't see it.

This is why networks like the CW/UPN/whateverthefuckitscalled are created. PICK UP THIS DAMN GAME.

This is probably the only way they can actually get people to go to these games.

Looked at the play by play on ESPN.com.

The thing that jumps out at me is that Sheed is definitely in midseason form. He was ejected tonight (2 techs). I'm giddy.

Maxiell is doing his very best to play himself out of the rotation, and Sheed is doing his best to bitch himself out of the NBA.

he better hope Amir doesn't come out and light it up when he gets back, because Max might actually get dropped in the rotation if he can't prove he can grab a rebound to save his life.

Flip is starting to get pissed...and it sounds like Dumars isn't happy either

"The concern I have right now is with Maxey," Saunders said. "I tell him every day and Joe (Dumars) tells him every day, he's got to defensive rebound. If he can't defensive rebound, then he really hurts himself."

As depressing as it sounds for JMax right now, he gets a bit of a pass in my book at the moment. I think it was Glenn that posted an article from the Cavs game and it said JMax was playing center because the starters were done and Amir among others were hurting. I assume it was a similar situation tonight. Considering that... we already know he is an undersized PF who plays above his size... then you think that he has been playing center and well no shit he is getting outrebounded. I can't say too much because I haven't seen any of the preseason, but that's my 2c.

If the rebounding doesn't improve, Samb might actually have to play.

I wish we could have found a way to snag Camby from Denver.

Utah always out rebound us. Not just because of their forwards and centers, but because their guards box out. We have always sucked at getting our guards on the boards.

I'm not surprised that Utah outrebounded us, albeit without boozer. Maybe have to play Nazr more if either maxey/amir start costing us games with rebounding issues.

My observations from the game:

Samb fouling out in 18 minutes says that he really isn't ready.

If Dupree can't get time in games like these and can't play well in the time he gets, why is he still on the roster?

For all of the talk about Flip Murray playing well because it's a contract year has yet to emerge.

Hayes looks like an awesome pick up!

Flip is starting to get pissed...and it sounds like Dumars isn't happy either

This seems to be Max has been called out in his NBA career. I'm interested to see how he responds.

My observations from the game (I was there):

Stuckey is pretty good on offense, and can get to the lane at will, but he needs to work on his decision-making. He drove into brick walls sometimes and made some bad passes. Also, he needs to move his feet better on defense.

Jarvis Hayes looks to be the closest thing to a legit SF backup that we've had since Corliss. I think he can be a big asset this season if he can play solid defense and rebound. He's very intelligent offensively.

Afflalo seems to have beaten out Flip Murray based on his tenacity and decision-making. Mejia has no place on this team. Both of his touches resulted in bad shots.

Lastly, Maxiell made me sick last night. I kept commenting to my dad, "Let's see if Maxie's guy can get an offense rebound again this time down the floor." Sure enough, he did. He truly has a lot of potential, but his body language doesn't look good at all. I dare say he looked mildly like Darko in terms of body language last night.

Dude needs to elbow up to the baby buffet and get to work, no doubt.

Maybe he has the post-"hey they picked up my option' syndrome.

I get the Denver game. Can't wait.
