Toughest matchup yet. Detroit fans hold Ernie dear, but it's gotta be Johnie Mac. That guy was one of the most talented players of all time, and continues to be a staple in the tennis world.

I love you Ernie, but Johnie Mac. The guy can jump over taxi cabs that are trying to run him over. (See: Mr. Deeds)

I don't really get the love for baseball announcers.

In addition to his broadcast work, Ernie is probably one of the best storytellers in baseball (sports?) history.

He's also an accomplished songwriter.

Harwell also wrote popular music. His first recorded song was "Upside Down" on the Something Stupid album by Homer and Jethro in the mid-1960s. In the liner notes of the album, it says: "Detroit Tiger baseball announcer wrote this one, and we think it's a fine observation of the world today, as seen from the press box at Tiger Stadium. We were up there with Ernie one day and from there the world looks upside down. In fact, the Mets were on top in the National League." All told, 66 songs written by Ernie Harwell have been recorded by various artists.

Not that ya care.

Now if Rod Allen was the #9 instead of Harwell....

I love Ernie to death but when I think Ernie Harwell, I don't think "Cool".

Another close one.

Anybody want to add any support to either side?

This is not Harwell. He did the middle three innings on radio for this game and then the other six on television. I believe the setup is actually Harwell but the famous call is definately not his but his broadcast partner at the time Russ Hodges.

Dipshit, that's what happens to everyone's wife: THEY GET OLD. They wrinkle. The snatch dries up. They turn 30.

McEnroe because he used to hit cups of juice with his tennis racket,
talked a big game, played even bigger and didn't take shitoffanobody.

And...One year, after winning at Wimbeldon, he jumped on the Concord and split for New York. He didn't even go to all the 'after stuff' that winners are now required to do.

Snubbing the Queen is pretty cool.

Right on. Reminds me of Jim Thorpe receiving his Olympic medals from herring-breathed King Gustav of Sweden. "Mr. Thorpe, you are the greatest athlete in the world today." "Gee, thanks King."
