View Full Version : Is it even worth me asking about soccer...
...or am I simply going to get laughed off a board I just joined?
I mean I'm basically a much bigger fan of American sports in general but I do like soccer (well not the MLS). I like international competition and European League action since it's at least all the best players in the world playing on top teams. This week started the European Cup/Champions League which is pretty fun and usually has some pretty good games, even for the casual fan.
But if I'm just embarrassing myself even bringing this up we can just sweep it under the rug.
MoTown 09-19-2007, 07:32 PM Nah - there's a couple guys on this board that like soccer. Plus this is the "Other Sports" Forum, so have at it.
I have nothing to add because I can't stand it, but I'm not going to rip on you for liking it.
Douche.
j/k
RegicideGreg 09-19-2007, 08:06 PM Boo Soccer!!!
giffman 09-19-2007, 09:50 PM I'm not afraid to admit it, I'm a soccer fan.
Anyone who doesn't think it is a tough sport has never tried to play it at a high level.
-NoQuarter- 09-19-2007, 10:24 PM It's my favorite sport. Now that I am officially over the NBA, I'm going to get back into it more.
darkobetterthanmelo 09-19-2007, 10:32 PM Soccer is a fun sport to play, and watching the soccer being played in other countries with the best players in the world is entertaining, but the MLS bullshit they carry in America sucks, it's barely soccer.

I admit it's a tough sport and difficult to play. I could never do what they can do... but I also admit that most soccer players are giant vaginas, or at least act like one. I hate the fact that you have to pretend to be hurt to win. It seems like cheating to me.
If you get carried off the field in a stretcher, you damn sure better be injured for at least the rest of the season. I've seen them be carried off and then back playing later in the game.
The Euro soccer players have flooded over to the NBA as well, thus ruining the game I used to love. Thanks Manu, Anderson Varejao, Nocioni, Divac and Dwyane Wade... oh wait Wade's not a Euro.
Yeah, the diving is the worst part of the game for me, and really hard to stomach sometimes. I wouldn't say that you have to pretend to be hurt to win a game though, I mean there is a LOT of diving trying to get free kicks and even penalty kicks but a player can technically get carded in the area for a dive. I mean there's no doubt that a dive can change the game, but no more so than getting a ticky-tacky foul calls in the NBA (with or without diving).
BTW: Why do Manu, Varejao and other South American players get lumped into being called Euros? Basically, in general and IMO, the only non-diving in areas off the top of my head (soccer and basketballl) are the US, Canada (just to throw that out there) and the UK, with of course a LOT of exceptions on both sides of that rule.
MoTown 09-19-2007, 10:52 PM Good call on the Euros... I guess they should be called FIBAs, because that's the style of basketball they play. Which really isn't basketball.
FIBA ruined the country.
-NoQuarter- 09-19-2007, 10:58 PM Or they could just be called South Americans.
Cross 09-20-2007, 05:36 AM Mola, Muhme and Mola were the few that kept the worldcup thread alive. I;m sure there were a shitload more.
Yeah soccer's the shit. Not korean soccer, not american soccer, but european and south american. Ghana and some other African countires are making their way up. I was pushing for a Ghana upset over Brazil:emo kid:
That hollywood action shit gets annoying as well as players being carried of strethcers every game. Fuck ifyou have a cramp, walk that shit out or ask for a fucking sub instead of taking 2 minutes to drink your water and get carried off.
WTFchris 09-20-2007, 10:36 AM Love to play it, hate to watch it. The only soccer I like watching is world cup/olympic stuff. The representing your country element adds a lot more to it IMO. I could care less about MLS, etc. I did used to watch some of the arena stuff they used to play in the Palace though, was that the Rockers?
Rockers or Neon. Drago was Rockers I believe.
WTFchris 09-20-2007, 11:17 AM Neon was it. It was somewhat entertaining because we didn't have arena soccer when I grew up (and I'm only 28). I would have enjoyed that, and still would now.
Maybe they didn't have it where you grew up but indoor soccer was around when you grew up. I'm 26 and played it through my youth/teens. A couple friends and I are actually looking into it for this winter.
Glenn 09-20-2007, 12:06 PM I remember seeing the ads on TBS (then WTCT) for the Atlanta Chiefs indoor team back when I was a kid. Yeah, that was a long time ago, but I still remember some of the the jingle, even.
There's a new kind of soccer
It's played indoors
Atlanta Chiefs soccer
Get ready to score!
How did that not catch on?

I figured that, since I watched it on TV (the Neon) when I was an early teen. But they didn't have it up in Traverse City. We played outdoors at the YMCA fields.
We only had one Ice arena at the time (they've since built 2 new ones that the Red Wings practice on), so I suspect we just didn't have arena space to play indoor.

Words can hurt sometimes.
