View Full Version : Led Zeppelin reunion
Glenn 09-12-2007, 03:20 PM I've been hearing a lot of rumors about this happening, and while I was really hoping that it would be a full tour, maybe that will end up being the result if this goes well.
Led Zeppelin to perform comeback gig

LONDON - Led Zeppelin will perform a one-time comeback concert in memory of Ahmet Ertegun, a co-founder of Atlantic Records.
The band will perform together for the first time in 19 years on Nov. 26, at London's The O2 venue, on the banks of the River Thames.
Promoters said the concert would pay tribute to Ertegun — the label boss who popularized Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Led Zeppelin — who died in December at age 83.
"During the Zeppelin years, Ahmet Ertegun was a major foundation of solidarity and accord," said Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant. "For us he was Atlantic Records and remained a close friend and conspirator."
Ertegun, who co-founded the Atlantic Records label with Herb Abramson, signed Plant's band in 1968 and later snapped up the Rolling Stones.
Led Zeppelin's remaining original members Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones will headline the concert with late drummer John Bonham's son, Jason, on drums, organizers said Wednesday.
The quartet is expected to perform a full set lasting up to two hours.
Promoter Harvey Goldsmith said Led Zeppelin would play one show only and there was no commitment or discussion of playing beyond that.
The Who's Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman, Foreigner and young Scottish singer Paolo Nutini — the last British act Ertegun signed — will also play at the tribute concert.
All proceeds will go to the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund to establish music scholarships for students at institutions in Britain, the United States and Turkey, Goldsmith said.

All will be revealed

Zip Goshboots 09-12-2007, 07:30 PM It's not a reunion without the real Bonzo.
It's just that simple.
Right on, Moxie. I thought they were totally classy by not replacing Bonzo and going out there as a different version.
Big Swami 09-12-2007, 09:20 PM In this way, at least, Led Zeppelin > The Who.
In most other ways, I prefer The Who.
Zip Goshboots 09-12-2007, 09:23 PM It took awhile, Swami, but you finally said something I disagree with. I think Led Zeppelin rulez The Who.
Big Swami 09-12-2007, 09:45 PM In most cases, you're 100% right. The Who began a slow decline into ball-gargling somewhere around the time of Tommy. I also really like early Led Zeppelin, like the first 2 albums especially. But the early Who was an incredible rock and roll machine. This is the only evidence I plan to offer in my defense:

Glenn 09-18-2007, 01:11 PM Sex Pistols announce 30th anniversary gig
Tue Sep 18, 8:08 AM ET
LONDON (AFP) - Punk legends the Sex Pistols announced Tuesday that they will stage a one-off gig in November to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their controversial album "Never Mind the B*llocks".
The band, who spearheaded the 1970s punk movement in England with singles like "Anarchy in the UK" and "Pretty Vacant", will play London's Brixton Academy on November 8, they said on a music paper's website.
"Maybe it's because we're all Londoners, but there would be no Sex Pistol without dear old London town," colourful frontman John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, said on NME.com.
"See you all at Brixton with proper feelings and proper people all around. From London Bridge to The Rose And Crown, all of Britain is welcome so come on down," he added.
All four surviving members of the band -- Lydon, guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock -- will perform at the London gig, they said.
The band's original bass player, Sid Vicious, died after a drug overdose in 1979.
The Sex Pistols were formed in 1975 but split in 1978. They reformed in 1996, and their last concert together was in 2003. Tickets for the November concert will go on sale on Friday, September 21.
Glenn 11-15-2007, 03:26 PM Two Zeppelin tickets make $170,000 in charity sale
Thu Nov 15, 11:23 AM ET
LONDON (Reuters) - A man from Glasgow paid 83,000 pounds ($170,000) for a pair of tickets to a one-off Led Zeppelin reunion gig in London on December 10, according to the BBC which organized the charity auction.
Kenneth Donell was the winner of Thursday's sale held by radio host Terry Wogan for the Children in Need charity. Over the last four days, the auction has raised 894,000 pounds, the BBC added.
Several million fans tried to buy tickets to the Led Zeppelin reunion gig at London's O2 arena, which had to be postponed after guitarist Jimmy Page broke a finger.
The tickets went on sale at 125 pounds each, although they are trading at several times that on the online auction site www.ebay.co.uk.
In addition to watching the concert, Donell will also be allowed to watch Led Zeppelin rehearse the day before and take home a signed memento from the 1970s rockers.

Glenn 12-10-2007, 11:32 AM Led Zeppelin to return to stage
By CHRIS LEHOURITES, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 23 minutes ago
LONDON - Led Zeppelin fans from around the world descended Monday on London to see the legendary rock 'n' roll band perform a full set for the first time in nearly three decades.
Led by its three surviving members — singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist-keyboardist John Paul Jones — Led Zeppelin will be joined by the late John Bonham's son Jason on drums for the benefit show Monday at the O2 Arena.
Led Zeppelin has not played a full set since 1980, the year John Bonham died after choking on his own vomit. Robbed of "Bonzo's" pulsing drums, the band decided it couldn't go on and split up on Dec. 4, 1980.
Now, with an estimated 20 million fans vying for tickets pared down to a lucky 18,000 or so — including one who paid more than $168,000 for his pair — most of the rest are hoping for more tour dates.
But Plant — with his screeching, often unintelligible lyrics leading the way during the band's 12 years and eight studio albums — may be toughest of the three to be convinced that it's a good idea to go on tour.
"The whole idea of being on a cavalcade of merciless repetition is not what it's all about," the 59-year-old Page told The Sunday Times.
That certainly won't be music to the ears of millions of fans who are hoping hear "Stairway to Heaven," "Whole Lotta Love" and "Kashmir" in concert again.
Plant, who recently released a successful album with bluegrass star Alison Krauss, did give an indication that this may not be the last of Led Zeppelin, however.
"It wouldn't be such a bad idea to play together from time to time," Plant added.
Monday's concert won't be the first Led Zeppelin reunion, but it will be the biggest. The band played together in 1985 at Live Aid, and joined forces again three years later — with Jason Bonham on drums — to play at the 40th anniversary concert for Atlantic Records.
At their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 1995, they teamed up with other musicians for another short set.
Priced at $250, tickets have been selling on the Internet for upwards of $2,000.
Kenneth Donnell, 25, said he paid $168,500 for his tickets from British Broadcasting Corp. radio's "Things That Money Can't Buy" charity auction last month.
"I was gutted that I was not born in the 1960s and able to see Led Zeppelin in the 1970s like my dad," Donnell told The Sunday Times.
Monday's show is dedicated to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, who died last year. Proceeds from the show are to go to the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund, which provides scholarships to universities in the United States, Britain and Turkey.
The show was originally scheduled for Nov. 26, but was postponed until Monday because Page injured the little finger on his left hand.
Former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman and one-time Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers are also scheduled to perform.
Big Swami 12-10-2007, 11:57 AM Apparently Robert Plant hates "Stairway To Heaven" and he doesn't want to have to sing it on any reunion dates. I don't blame him, I hate that shit too. I'm telling you man, first 2 albums and all downhill from there.
Zekyl 12-12-2007, 01:51 AM I've never liked that song. Everyone raves about it but I just can't stand it.

Whole Lotta Love

These are what make Led Zeppelin great. All that Stairway to Heaven, Kashmir, etc. stuff just seems to drag on forever with no point.
Uncle Mxy 12-12-2007, 09:55 AM There's lots of great stuff beyond the first two albums. My favorite LZ song is on their third album. The Houses Of The Holy album is awesome from start to finish, in my book. Fuck, Billy Squier made a career out of borrowing late-LZ goodies like Nobody's Fault But Mine.
Timone 12-12-2007, 09:56 AM Over the Hills and Far Away.
That's my favorite Zeppelin song.
Uncle Mxy 12-12-2007, 09:58 AM And it's on their FIFTH album -- fuck, I didn't sanity-check Big Swami's list. :)
Glenn 12-12-2007, 10:03 AM Heard a great soundbyte from Plant this morning on the Zep XM channel in reference to Zeppelin 3.
Paraphrase:
"When Led Zeppelin 3 came out, it was not very well received, people were like, "What am I supposed to do with this? Where is 'Whole Lotta Love' part 2, 3 and 4?" Well, you can find those on Black Sabbath's Paranoid. People didn't understand that we also needed to please ourselves with that album".
Zep 3 is one of my favorites.
I actually celebrate LZ's entire catalog.
I'm surprised that Swami is taking such a hardline stance on something so subjective.
Timone 12-12-2007, 10:13 AM I like Stairway to Heaven, I like Kashmir, I like Zeppelin period. I DO not like the University of Michigan.
Big Swami 12-12-2007, 10:23 AM I once read an article in which the writer described Led Zeppelin as "a band who was electrified by the blues, and so decided to return the favor." That's what I think about them too. Their best stuff is the psychedelic blues-based music and all that folky shit just bores me. But then again, I like early Black Sabbath too, so I guess Plant's got a point.
Timone 12-12-2007, 10:24 AM I love anything blues.
By early Black Sabbath do you mean Earth?
Big Swami 12-12-2007, 10:24 AM Billy Squier made a career out of borrowing late-LZ goodies like Nobody's Fault But Mine.

Indeed that was one helluva album... way ahead of it's time.... black lights.. posters... incense and the good stuff (you get the drift)
As for the Zep thing... best band, hands down... "Immigrant" song is solid... the later stuff would get ya laid more times than not...
Fav Zep song... "Rock and roll"
Then there was Hendrix... save this for another thread.
mercury 12-13-2007, 02:06 AM Personally I never was into Ozzy outside of Sabbath.
Ditto
Big Swami 12-13-2007, 08:24 AM If anyone has never heard the box set "How The West was Won" you've really got to give it a shot. It's all early Zeppelin live, and it's incredible. All before Plant's motorcycle accident, when his voice was insanely good.
I remember being really into Ozzy solo when I was a teenager - the Diary Of A Madman LP got much play on my turntable. I would probably laugh at it now.
Timone 12-13-2007, 10:21 AM I fucking can't stand Ozzy's voice. My mom LOVES him though.

Singer Plant rules out Led Zeppelin reunion
1 hour, 13 minutes ago
LONDON (Reuters) - Former Led Zeppelin lead singer Robert Plant has put paid to persistent rumors that the British rock giants were planning to reunite for a tour. The famous foursome got back together for a one-off charity gig in London last December, and the media has speculated ever since that they could stage a comeback tour that would be expected to sell out arenas around the world.
Band insiders have said that Plant, who is touring the United States with Alison Krauss, has been the most reluctant to get back together, and a statement on his website on Monday made clear his intentions.
"Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are currently touring the USA on the last leg of their 'Raising Sand' tour," he said, adding that the tour finished on October 5.
"After those dates, Robert has no intention whatsoever of touring with anyone for at least the next two years.
"Contrary to a spate of recent reports, Robert Plant will not be touring or recording with Led Zeppelin."
He called the reports "both frustrating and ridiculous," before adding: "I wish (guitarist) Jimmy Page, (bassist/instrumentalist) John Paul Jones and (drummer) Jason Bonham nothing but success with any future projects."
Bonham's father John died in 1980 after a drinking binge, prompting the demise of a group that created hits like "Stairway to Heaven" and "Whole Lotta Love," and has sold more than 300 million albums and influenced countless bands.
Uncle Mxy 09-30-2008, 08:22 PM I can't blame him for not being interested. The stuff he's been doing with Alison Krauss is pretty awesome on its own terms.

Uncle Mxy 12-31-2008, 09:58 AM I was surprised that Page didn't write and record some original material with the Robinsons, in some form or fashion.
Glenn 01-25-2009, 10:56 AM Speaking of uniting--or reuniting, more specifically--this week it was announced that, after much protest from Led Zeppelin fans about a Robert Plant-less Led Zep "reunion" tour, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and Jason Bonham will not be hitting the road under the "Led Zeppelin" moniker after all. It seems the band was unable to find a proper singer to fill Robert Plant's mighty boots. Gee, go figure. The Zep dues were auditioning people like Alter Bridge frontman Myles Kennedy (it should be noted that Alter Bridge is just Creed with a different lead singer, which means Zeppelin were actually considering replacing Robert Plant with a Scott Stapp replacement), so it's no surprise that their audition rounds were unfruitful. Apparently the song does NOT remain the same, if Plant isn't singing it.
Timone 01-25-2009, 04:21 PM Why in the fuck would you even consider auditioning some jerkoff that is in a band with members of CREED?
