There are too many shows that I want to watch and too little time. I realize I need to invest in a Tivo or other PVR. Everyone who has one seems to love it. So, my question is, what should I get? Tivo? A different PVR via Comcast cable?

I have only had one the DirecTV's HD DVR. No problems. I wish I could burn stuff I've recorded to a CD easier, but besides that, no prob bob.

I've been using comcast's dvr's for a few years. They're great but they do have some glitches (nothing too serious, annoyances is maybe a better word...fastforwarding and rewinding is weird sometimes, etc) so it may be just that that's all I've ever had that makes me like it so much.
Having a DVR can be "life changing" though if you're a couch potato. You watch what you want, when you want. I tend to watch tv only 1-2 times a week now, getting all the shows in when I have the time and not watching "crap" just because that's all that's on.
Watching sports is great too, I tend to set my tivo to record the game and then start like 20-30 minutes late. You can then zip through the commercials and time outs, etc and watch the game straight through. It's great.
Supposedly if you get an official "Tivo" you can network it in with your computer and copy stuff to your hard drive, which is impossible with the comcast one but I don't know much about it. If you have Comcast anyways, try one of theirs out, you can just return it if you need to after a month or so. It's 11.99 a month, but if you have a second box, that's 5.99 anyways so it's really only 6 bucks a month.
well, i took the plunge:

Free tivo and i picked up a wifi USB adaptor for it, for about $39 shipped from Amazon.

A plunge you won't regret. Its so nice to be able to take a phone call or watch 2 different programs without missing a thing.
OT--I have the hr-250 which is still considered one of the best, but I guess the new hi-def format is mp4 or something and is incompatable with my box. I was reading on a forum where they are coming out with a lil box that converts it for my box.

I can't live without my DVR. It's the straight-up Comcast DVR, but I love it. One thing I can't do anymore that I really used to love doing was getting my dad on the phone while I watched the game. He doesn't have digital cable, and I've got a digital signal buffered in the DVR, so I get everything about 7 seconds later than he does. If you're using your DVR's "rewind live TV" function, know that it incurs a delay of a few seconds so the video data gets buffered. It's not truly "live."
