We may see something even more historic Saturday night: The way these two teams are playing, they may BOTH lose the game and be 0-3 afterward.

Couldn`t happen to two more deserving programs. Harsh reality aside, I believe this will be an interesting game. UM`s secondary appears to be Pop Warner in quality which could give helium heels Clausen some early confidence.

Two anemic offenses (perhaps ND`s is worse) pitted against two gelded defenses. If Mouth Hart stays in the game and doesn`t feign an injury because he is pouting, UM should pull it out.

I`ll say Mouth Hart and the Quitters 27, Jimmy in the Closets 20. Prime-time baby, prime-time.

It will be a clash between Notre Dame's immovable offense vs. Michigan's unstoppable defense. I wonder if it is poosible for both teams to look terrible at the same time or if one team will have to look good in comparison.

With Henne, a 20 point victory for Michigan. Without? Toss up a coin. This one won't be pretty at all. I'll still watch, win-win situation for me with ND the following week for State and the hated Michigan facing 0-3.

Michigan quarterback Chad Henne will miss Notre Dame game

By LARRY LAGE, AP Sports Writer
September 10, 2007

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Injured Michigan quarterback Chad Henne will not play against Notre Dame.

Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr did not provide a timetable for Henne's return, listing him Monday as week-to-week. The senior was knocked out of the second half of Saturday's 39-7 loss to Oregon.

Freshman Ryan Mallett will start against the Fighting Irish on Saturday at home in a matchup of storied teams with 0-2 records.

"This test will be different than any he's had," Carr said. "But I can guarantee you that he's not intimidated."

Carr declined to confirm Saturday's ABC-TV report that Michigan trainer Paul Schmidt said Henne had a lower-leg injury.

The senior struggled in his first 1 1/2 games as the Wolverines opened with two losses at home for the first time since 1959.

Henne was 12-of-23 for 172 yards with a touchdown and an interception, a pass that sailed into double coverage on the opening drive against Oregon. In the opener, he was 19-of-37 for 233 yards with a score and an interception in Appalachian State territory.

Henne connected with Adrian Arrington late in the first quarter against Oregon, giving Michigan a 7-3 lead and tying a school record. It was the senior quarterback's 72nd touchdown pass, tying John Navarre.

Mallett started the second half and threw an interception midway through the third quarter. He finished with six completions in 17 attempts for 49 yards.

The freshman from Texarkana, Texas enrolled at Michigan in January and participated in spring practice.

"That helps a lot," offensive tackle Jake Long said. "It's kind of like he's a redshirt freshman."

What a clusterfuck! No Chad Henry? If I'm Chuck E. Weiss I sit that goofy looking Clausen and get "Demetrius the Gladiator" out of mothballs and teach him the spread over the next 4 days. Instant "W". My favorite weekend of the year. I can't lose. One of these stiffs has to lose.

Wrong, MSU wouldn't be in HD because they would have to be on a major station and to be on a major station you'd have to have a good team, therefore during the Bobby/JLS joke era...it didn't happen.

Okay, I'm going to make a prediction. Not much discussion here, I'll see if I can maybe at least spark some predictions. I think this game is close and both qbs make some mistakes. The fact that Clausen has at least started helps him and narrows the difference in teams slightly. He probably won't have the same jitters as Mallet. I'd love to predict a Irish win, but I think Long, Hart, and Mario are the difference. UM by 10. Ugly game. Wouldn't be surprised to see Weis open it up and spread it though making things a little shaky for old blue.

Which is why OSU and Wiscy are going to be fun.

I don't give a shit how bad ND is that was a good win. Now A2 gets a boost and another white stiff QB coming into the House. Dino Morelli, who I think was the lead singer for the "Quicksilver Messenger Service" (queue "What About Me?") has come back and in this incarnation is the lead footed white stiff Penn State QB that U-M feasts on. Just what the Doc ordered. Hart is a tough little shit and ran his ass off. Post game he guaranteed victory in Iraq so we can all look forward to that. I'm happy for the U-M. You think Mallet looked good? Wow, I guess I saw it completely different. I was sitting with some of my UM friends and they were hating it. Complaining about how he can't move, how he laughs every single time he makes a mistake, how his touch passes are just plain off, etc. Those aren't my words, those were theirs. I tended to agree with them in that I didn't think he looked that good.

I think he will be a giant issue against good teams.

TRE:
I'd say I wasn't terribly impressed with Mallett, but he only attempted 15 passes, completing seven and three were for TD's. The TD throws were all pretty good. We knew Lloyd would keep him on a short leash, and of course we know that ND's defense is pretty horrid. All in all, though, for being tossed in there due to Henne's injury, not at all something to be displeased with.
I don't know what your "UM friends" were expecting. Again, the side issues that mean nothing keep popping up in your posts (even if you attribute them to your "UM friends"), such as smiling at his mistakes. Hell, I dont know; maybe, and call me stupid if it's wrong, the kid was having some fun out there and the coaches pumped him by telling him not to get down on himself if he made a mistake.
Sounds to me like your "UM friends" are dickheads.

Dickheads? Ummm...no. Extremely intelligent football fans for the most part that were watching to see how he might end up being in the future. You can watch the conservative game plan and say he played executed it fairly well. I was watching to see how good he'd be in the future and my friends were as well. Things like touch on passes, mobility, making the right reads, etc. I could care less how he executes a dumbed down game plan against a HORRIBLE team. I was looking for the other things to see how he might play against the top comp. and in the future. I see tremendous arm strength and confidence. I see weaknesses in the areas listed earlier/above in this post.

BTW Zip, I don't expect you to be able to analyze a UM player's game and say anything remotely critical at all. I know in your mind a Wolverine player isn't capable of having any sort of flaws so I'm not anticipating a decent discussion on strengths and weaknesses, but whatever.

But if the smiling really bothered you and the dickheads, then fairness is probably out of the question.

8 days ago ryan mallet didnt think he was going to see one snap this season, and he is now starting. he's a true freshmen and a kid who is 6'7" and probably hasnt even grown into his body. you talk about your um fans who hated him who know more about football than we do. fine. chad henne says mallet has the tools to be the top UM qb ever. he was the #2 qb recruit in the country, after all. he atleast has the toolset of a john navarre (who, despite the criticisms, had an excellent NCAA career).

i love the "your incapable of being biased card" that you like to play. laughable, coming from you. its almost as good as the "im not on here to talk trash about this devastating, embarrassing, unprecedented loss".

buckdow is a little turd but atleast he accpets it. your the one who posts "the flame wars MUST end" in one post and in the next one are egging them on. its the whole 'holier than thou' schtick.

All this projecting on Mallett is laughable. The kid was a 4A Tejas stud. He's 18 years old and he's started one game. He does benefit in that he was an early enrollee at U-M in 1/07. This should help him soak up more than a kid who has been there 7 weeks. I'm all "wait and see" on this kid. Big arm. I'm thinkin' he's a pretty smart kid. To discount him is foolish but to anoint him at this stage is just as dumb. Penn State will test him with lots of looks and in doing so will make DeBord keep it real basic. They may be able to pull it off if the "D" gets in Morelli's face. He's just what they dream of. White and immobile. They've feasted on his bones before and don't think that won't be in Morelli's dome.

I guess Tre hasn't seen the "Michigan Sucks Balls" avatar that one of the Sparties here is rocking.

Funny, even when you agree with them, they want you to disagree.

And although I was just proposing a hypothetical "what if" with regards to the UM/MSU question, I think it has touched a nerve.

Let the excuses and couched comments commence!!

Excuses? Who should have them? The National Title hoping Wolverines that are an embarrassing 1-2 or the new coached Spartans that were picked to be bottom of the barrel in the BT at 3-0.

Nice logic.

How do you interpret me calling Michigan a bad team as making excuses?

My question/statement stands, for as much as Michigan as been a "national joke" as you have pointed out 1 or 467 times, what are you gonna say if they blow your team's door off?

If there ever was a year for MSU to take out all of their past frustration on UM, the time is now.

Let's see if they blow it or not.

Lots of cegentivity there, Hip.
It IS too early to rate Mallett, except to say that four years under Lloyd and we still wouldn;t know how talented he is.
Also, Michigan should be able to rattle Morelli, but I don;t think he's very good, anyway. Teams with quarterbacks who aren't very good is also something UM has been feasting on over the years.
I DO smell and upset here.

Just another example of a UM fan that is so blatantly wrapped up in his team that he can't discuss a player whatsoever. Seriously, you're horrible. I provided strengths and weaknesses that I've seen after a game and a half of Mallet and you've got your panties all in a bunch over it. Are you capable of discussing a player or do we all just have to bow down to every Wolverine on the planet? It's fucking hilarious, you can't even handle an ounce of criticism thrown a Michigan players way without having a hissy fit. I mean, it's not like I said the dude was terrible. I just wasn't all that impressed, yet I did point out strengths.

I think it is premature to judge mallett based on his first game. He probably had some jitters, but he made the throws that were needed to win the game. The one thing that I like compared to henne and navarre is his ability to throw on the run. Henne and Navarre were/are just awful at throwing without having their feet set. Mallett looks much more comfortable, even if he is not the most graceful runner. Once mallett gets accustomed to the speed of the college game, i think his "touch" passes will improve. The kid has unlimited potential. He throws the ball effortlessly.

That said, I think michigan loses a close game on saturday because their defense will give up too many big plays. 20-17 psu.

^I agree you can't judge him yet. A freshman QB starting against ND for an 0-2 Michigan team? Too much pressure to get an accurate judgement.

Note: I did not see the game so I am looking forward to seeing what he's got, even though Henne should start every game this year if healthy.
