U-M out of USA Today top 25 poll
September 4, 2007
By MARK SNYDER
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER
Michigan’s loss to Appalachian State continues to resonate.
The first in-season college football poll was released today and the Wolverines took a major fall.
Michigan fell out of the USA Today top 25 coaches poll, released just after 2 p.m. today, after holding the preseason No. 5 position. The Wolverines received 132 points and sit in the No. 27 spot.
The Associated Press poll had not been released.
According to USA Today, 22 of the 60 head coaches kept Michigan on their ballot, including one who kept them 10th.
The coaches rankings are significant because their poll influences the BCS rankings and, potentially, a spot in the national championship game.
“Every week, there’s some type of issue regarding the outside, regardless of whether you’ve won or lost,” Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said Tuesday. “It’s just a lot more fun dealing with those issues coming off a win. I don’t think there’s any question that you have to face the reality of your performance and the things you need to do to get better and the things that you need to do to better.”
Michigan has made the most appearances in the AP poll (741 times since 1936), and has appeared in the top 25 in all but seven of coach Lloyd Carr’s 150 career games (four games in 1998 and three in 2005.)
The 1998 season may be the best reference point for the Wolverines’ situation. Michigan opened that season ranked No. 5, coming off the 1997 national championship, but lost the first two games to Notre Dame and Syracuse.
Losing in South Bend dropped them to No. 13 in the AP poll and the loss to Syracuse in Ann Arbor dropped them out of the poll and into the “others receiving votes” category, where they sat 32nd overall.
Michigan’s last time out of the polls came after losing the 2005 Alamo Bowl to Nebraska, knocking them from the final poll.
Earlier in the 2005 season, the Wolverines suffered a major tumble, as well, when they fell to 2-2 and out of the Sept. 26 poll, ending a streak of 114 consecutive ranked weeks.
Michigan’s longest consecutive streak lasted 160 weeks from Oct. 14, 1968, to Sept. 22, 1980.
Tahoe 09-04-2007, 03:50 PM I have ZERO problem with them not being there.
I don't see MSU in there, must be a typo.
Glenn 09-04-2007, 03:51 PM The pollsters wear adidas.
Glenn 09-04-2007, 04:18 PM Also, this is further evidence that the polls that are included in the BCS formula should not even be taken until there are at least a few games played.
I know Auburn, Boise State, Rutgers and several other schools agree.
Baker 09-04-2007, 04:25 PM I agree that they shouldn't have a poll until after 3-4 games. I also agree that UM probably doesn't deserve to be a Top 25 team, however they are clearly one of the best 25 teams in collge fball IMO.
xanadu 09-04-2007, 04:38 PM According to USA Today, 22 of the 60 head coaches kept Michigan on their ballot, including one who kept them 10th.
Any guesses on who voted them 10th. Must be a big10 coach, hopefully other than lloyd himself. I would guess tressel or paterno.
Glenn 09-04-2007, 04:40 PM It would be smart for them (other Big Ten coaches) to do so to keep their SOS high. That might be what you are inferring, x.
WTFchris 09-04-2007, 05:05 PM Is this the biggest drop after one game ever? Just curious because it's the worst loss I've ever heard of.
Tahoe 09-04-2007, 05:44 PM On paper it is the biggest upset, imo. But like Glen has been saying, it might not be that huge if the season plays out like he suggests for the sake of argument.
These preseason prognosticators added to all of this.
The final fallout from a disastrous opening weekend for Michigan came Tuesday, when the Wolverines dropped all the way out of The Associated Press Top 25, an unprecedented fall from No. 5 to unranked.
Since the AP poll expanded to 25 teams in 1989, no team has taken a bigger tumble in one week.
I heard today, cant remember the exact team but I think OK dropped from 1 to out after losing to #3 ND after the first week when the poll was only 20 teams. Dumb IMO, losing to #3 isnt that bad.
Aside from that, sorry us UW people dont run up the score and we put our 3rd string people in there against what could be a decent team in WS while OK runs up a score against a lesser team to tie UW in the polls. Like UW couldnt have run up the score? We won, we move on, we dont care. (I dont care, just making a point)
HipDigIt 09-05-2007, 07:52 AM Michigan is a top 15 team easily. It matches up with their recruiting effort these last few years. Typical overreaction in the wake of one of the Top 5 upsets in the history of sports. I figured about 9-3 with one Big 10 loss at the start and I'll stay with that.
WTFchris 09-05-2007, 09:27 AM I head this morning that no team has ever dropped out from the top 5 since the poll expanded to 25 teams.

Glenn 09-10-2007, 11:01 AM Question: are the pollsters violating Bukdow's Law if they vote for a school but they didn't attend it?
Pollsters have a tenuous connection to these schools, at best.

WTFchris 10-01-2007, 02:46 PM Not a good year to stumble out of the gates like Michigan. With all the early losses to favorites it's a good year to watch your competition drop like flies.
I bet Florida has a lot of fans to beat LSU all of a sudden. If that happens there is a pretty good chance that there will be only one unbeated BCS team (USC), if that.
xanadu 10-08-2007, 01:47 AM I posted the usa today coaches poll. I think it is crap. I would put USC after Oregon, Missouri, South Car., ASU, Cinci, Wisc, Ken, and Kansas. They haven't beaten anyone and they lost to stanford at home. If they beat oregon and cal, you can put them back near the top. I also think OK, Virginia tech, and texas are too high. I think Oregon, S. Car, Ken, Missouri, Kansas are too low. Also who is giving votes to stanford, ucla, and mich state?

b-diddy 10-08-2007, 02:06 AM i hate to say this, but OSU is playing like it belongs in the NC game this year.
beating them in ann arbor would mean alot, to say the least. i dont see it happening, though.
this is perhaps the craziest year of NCAA football i can remember. the number of dangerous teams seems to be endless, and yet everyone seems beatable.
look at the big ten, everyone talks about how bad it is, but i've seen most of the teams play now and it seems like everyone has atleast a couple of real strong positives.
example, indiana aint winning the big ten, but they legitimately could sneak into a bowl game.

Artermis 10-08-2007, 11:08 AM Illinois much better than Stanford beats Wisky by 5. Stanford beats USC by 1 and Wisky drops a ton of spaces. Now Wisky is overhyped, but so is USC. Who has USC beaten a bad Neb team on the road? A team that barely beat Ball State at home and got blown out by Mizzou.
Yeah, people who vote are dumb.
If we could get 20 guys that come here that could leave their team spirit at the door, I think we could do a better job.

Artermis 10-22-2007, 01:51 PM Well to be honest...LSU has beaten 4 teams in the BCS top 25, which really helps them.
If ASU gets through Oregon and USC with no losses they will get above LSU at some point.

Tahoe 10-22-2007, 03:52 PM If Hawaii beats Fresno State, Boise State and Washington, I got no problems with them getting a BCS bid.
3 more unranked? Put Hawaii in the B10 and they're fighting Minni at the bottom, imo.
I was going to say, I want UofM to have their Schedge next year, but after the debacle that is Apple St...nevermind!
I have a love/hate thing going on with Boise. I hate that Blue field, but love the way they play.
xanadu 10-22-2007, 04:17 PM I was quite young, but I remember when byu won a national title by coming from behind to beat a crappy 6-6 michigan team in the holiday bowl. (I think harbaugh was injured that year.) Anyways, I doubt hawaii would make the championship game because they have a zero computer score right now. I guess Boise St. and maybe uw would raise it, but not by much.
As a side note, do people here think that oklahoma is that great of a team? They looked good against missouri and a poor miami team, but lost to colorado and didn't look that great against texas or iowa state. Yet, everyone thinks they are the best 1-loss team besides lsu. Personally, i think oregon, florida, and even USF have been more impressive. Also, it is pretty amazing that usf fell farther in the polls for losing at rutgers than usc for losing at home to stanford. in fact, michigan has a better computer score than usc at this point, yet usc is voted into the top 10. (note for sparty fans, my issue is with usc being too high, not michigan being too low.)
WTFchris 10-22-2007, 06:32 PM If Hawaii beats Fresno State, Boise State and Washington, I got no problems with them getting a BCS bid.
Boise beat Weber St, Wyoming and Southern Miss and lost to Washington in their non-conference. Yippee.
Fresno beat Sacramento State and lost their other two. I'm impressed.
Washington beat Syracuse and Boise, then lost 5 straight. we are really building a resume now.
Still have no problem?
Artermis 10-22-2007, 07:10 PM Nope. Because they wont win all 3 games. Therefore, I dont really have a problem.
They be lucky to win 1 of the 3.
Oregon is the best offense in the land this year. They are deadly. This weekend Oregon vs. USC in Eugene. Should be a good one.
Tahoe 10-22-2007, 07:28 PM Gotcha. I was wondering where you were coming from. You don't mind, cuz it aint gonna happen.

Tahoe 10-22-2007, 07:30 PM This year's NCAA football SCREAMS for a playoff system. If they ever do go to a playoff system, it will rank right there with MMadness, imo. Well, maybe not. Excuse me while I go argue with myself.
b-diddy 10-22-2007, 11:56 PM i thought last year was the best argument for, and ultimately against, college football playoffs.

But he is saying if they win them all they deserve the bid. Read his previous post:
If Hawaii beats Fresno State, Boise State and Washington, I got no problems with them getting a BCS bid.
How can you say they won't beat 3 teams that totally suck?
Artermis 10-23-2007, 07:11 PM Because I have seen all 4 teams play and no way Hawaii beats all 3 teams not even if all 3 were at home.
WTFchris 10-23-2007, 08:20 PM That doesn't really answer both questions though. You said you'd have no problem with them being in the BCS after winning 3 games because you don't think they'll win all 3.
That's like me saying I don't have a problem with my wife cheating on me because I don't think she will. So what? What if it DOES happen?
Artermis 10-24-2007, 07:11 AM I cannot get all riled up over something that I dont think will happen.
To use your analogy. I dont think my wife will cheat and thus I cannot get all bothered by something that hasnt happened. If and when it happens, check back with me on how my reaction would change.

Hip, you may indeed use the "cheating" line.

So you are saying because something hasn't happened, you cannot form an opinion on how you would feel if it happened?
I've never been pissed on by a random person walking by, but I'm pretty sure I'd be mad if that ever happened.
I don't know how many wins the Pistons will have, but I would be pretty pissed if they miss the playoffs.
Aparently we cannot deal with hypotheticals in your world. Wierd.
Artermis 10-25-2007, 01:10 PM Why should I get pissed over something I dont think will happen.
There is a point and time for people to get pissed off. If Hawaii can get through the Fresno and Boise with wins, then you can start getting pissed about something that has a much higher chance of happening than something that at this point has about a 5% chance of happening.
From what you guys are saying I should get pissed at my wife for cheating just because I thought it could happen. Yeah that makes sense.
Sure you can deal with hypotheticals, knock yourself out. I didnt get all pissy because people were getting pissed about Hawaii having a chance. I just stated I wasnt worried about it and dont have a problem with how things are going as of today.
WTFchris 10-25-2007, 02:06 PM Sure you can deal with hypotheticals, knock yourself out. I didnt get all pissy because people were getting pissed about Hawaii having a chance. I just stated I wasnt worried about it and dont have a problem with how things are going as of today.
Now we are getting somewhere. If you had said that bolded part instead of what you did say, I would have agreed %100. I don't care where people are ranked right now, only the final poll matters. However, you said you wouldn't have a problem with them being in the BCS games with a perfect record. So, you were operating in a hypothetical world there. You are saying two different things.
My guess is the bolded part is what you believe, and that you didn't mean to say you had no problem with an undefeated Hawaii team in the BCS games. That, or you didn't realize how shitty their remaining opponents were and you changed your mind.
Anyway, I am done with this since you are changing your story and there is no point persuing a comment that you are dancing around.

All lost today and #16 is trailing by 2 TD's right now. I'm not sure if you put a 2 loss USC and Florida behind Michigan, but Michigan could be a top 15 team going into next week possibly. Kinda scary considering where we were after two weeks in this season.
Tahoe 10-28-2007, 01:02 AM Not sure where to post this but some Sparties were talking about how 'embarrassing' the Duck loss was for UofM. The Ducks are a gnats ass from being undefeated. It's not embarrassing to lose to a top 10 team...especially this year. The Ducks will be top 5 after tomorrows poll.
Full disclosure: I know that UofM lost to Appy St.
Glenn 10-28-2007, 07:45 AM Full disclosure: I know that UofM lost to Appy St.
That would make a nice sig, just so it could be present in every post.

What does that make Appalachian State?
Tahoe 10-28-2007, 03:08 PM UofM has no easy road with a big in-state rivalry, then Wisky who might have found it way after a couple of losses (at Wisky, btw) then the boys in pink or crimson or whatever.
We have to knock those douches out of the top spot.
Tahoe 10-28-2007, 03:15 PM I hate to do this because I know it will jinx Michigan, but look at this......

Not a bad call, almost cogent

MoTown 10-28-2007, 06:53 PM So let me get this straight...
There are 4 teams in the top 25 that have 3 losses. All four of those teams come from... THE SEC!!!
Can we PLEASE stop fucking overrating them? Give me a break. I hate college football sometimes.
I still say Florida makes it to the National Championship. Urban Meyer has begun lobbying.

Tahoe 10-28-2007, 08:56 PM Oregon vs AZ St will be a good one next week.
Tahoe 11-03-2007, 11:15 PM So Georgia at 4 and AZ St losses are the 2 that might help us go to 10. Not sure if we'd jump over A St.
Tahoe 11-03-2007, 11:25 PM And BC down to FLA ST 3pts in the 4th.
Tahoe 11-03-2007, 11:54 PM BC goes down. So 3 teams ahead of UofM go down.
Tahoe 11-04-2007, 02:55 PM We didn't jump over any of the 3 teams ahead of us that lost yesterday in the AP.

I guess losing early doesn't count anymore. I thought we had a chance to leapfrog Georgia. The computer wasn't impressed with a win over Sparty apparently.

Zip Goshboots 11-11-2007, 08:54 PM One of those "oddball things: UM is still ahead of Wisconsin, but both are behind Illinois.
I'm amazed at the love LSU gets. They almost lost to Alabama, did lose to Kentucky, and their non con schedule is as big a joke as anybody's. Florida nearly beat 'em.
I'm not sure why West Virginia jumped Missouri. Could it be that stirring victory over a lousy Louisville team? That must be it.
I really wonder what is going to happen if Kansas wins out. Hell, even if Missouri or Oklahoma win out, it could be interesting. Would they deserve to play for the title more than Oregon?
Tahoe 11-11-2007, 09:11 PM I've read a couple stories that said KU doesn't go to the title game. Not sure if they have computer models that know the strength of Schedge?
It was getting fun again looking forward to the polls every week, but after losing to Wisky, it doens't matter anymore. I wonder how far we could have climbed if we beat Wisky and OSU?
Theres that if again...If the queen had a cock, she'd be the king.
xanadu 11-11-2007, 11:01 PM I think LSU deserves the top spot over say oklahoma, wvu, missouri. I could see giving oregon the nod, but they lost at home to an unranked team. So that leaves Kansas, but Kansas really hasn't played anybody. LSU's non-conf. schedule included a demolition of virginia tech, so it is not that bad.
Zip Goshboots 11-12-2007, 12:07 AM Xanadu:
I forgot about LSU beating VaTech. Having said that, If Kansas goes UNDEFEATED in a major conference that has a championship game, that should be good enough. They would have to beat Missouri and Oklahoma to do that.
Tahoe 11-25-2007, 04:35 PM Missou and WV 1 and 2. OSU and Georgia waiting in the wings
Missou and WV 1 and 2. OSU and Georgia waiting in the wings
That's a game nobody could have predicted if it stays that way.
Timone 11-25-2007, 04:52 PM Hopefully it does. Plus I wanna see OSU-USC in the Rose Bowl.
