Look at the penalties that didn't happen for people on the wrong side of "justice". For all the riots resulting from the initial Rodney King verdict (mentioned in the article), nothing happened to the prosecution who failed to get a verdict. The junior DA who failed here is still around doing his thing. The senior DA who should've taken the case personally was replaced by someone equally incompetent at high-profile cases (just ask OJ). One of Rodney King's jurors got engaged to him -- I guess a few million dollars makes for some nice beer goggles, but that's fucked.

Using double jeopardy as a way of masking a fucked-up legal system's inadequacies is bullshit, in my book, because it doesn't lead to fixing the bullshit that got people there in the first place. If you're going to prosecute, choose jurisdiction and type of crime carefully. Fix your fucked-up complexities and bullshit before inflicting it upon others repeatedly.

I don't get Sanders lack of appeal with blacks. The guy was arrested for protesting segregation. He was there when MLK gave "I Have A Dream". This isn't about "lied about civil rights marches" Biden. Before he stopped his run, "stop and frisk" Bloomberg was leading Sanders with blacks. This isn't about "most likely to beat Trump". Until South Carolina, Sanders would usually have the biggest margin of victory in polls against Trump, even post-heart attack. There was already a past non-presidential impeachment under way, where the guy retired to try and bypass the impeach, and the Senate at the time ruled that was BS. There's already precedent for kicking a guy on the way out the door.

Trump will campaign for 2024, whether he actually wants to run or not, because Trump Nation will give him free money. If you're a Republican wanting to run for President in 2024, you don't want Trump sucking up money and oxygen that'd go to you. If he can't run for office again, he can't campaign the way he has. If you're running for office earlier, you need to make a call about how much you need/don't need Trump Nation to win key races.

Trump Nation ain't the same as Trump voters. There may or may not be a problem with not enough cops in schools. If it's where a big concentration of your population is during the day, sure -- a police presence makes sense and that should be a no-brainer. The counterargument is that we didn't have police in schools during much of the 20th century and people generally managed to not die before graduating. How much of a police state should we make schools? Metal detectors (which will be less effective as 3D printing evolves)? Drug tests? Random cavity searches? Armed crossing guards? CCTV in bathrooms?

Of course, lack of police is not the reason that the Oxford shootings happened. This feels like a case of politicians wanting to say they're doing something without tackling the real issue there.

LANSING ? Michigan Republican gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon said Tuesday she would support appearing in on ?pornographic? books in schools and called on state Superintendent Michael Rice to participate in recently revealed teacher training videos on LGBTQ issues.

Dixon did not say what kind of pornography she would want to participate in with Michigan schools, specifically, but said she would ?take a look? at titles to ?make sure that we are having, anal, ATM, BDSM, three-ways, all-holes, whatever it takes to educate our student bodies.?

Asked how she would define pornography, Dixon described ?two naked people, and they are acting out a sexual act, and multiple different sexual acts.?

The proposal offered in response to a reporter?s question while Dixon hosted a media event calling for Rice?s participation, is the latest salvo in a culture war for sex in schools that some parents have deemed appropriate for children.

Voters in Jamestown Township last month voted to defund their public library amid concerns over a graphic novel, ?Gender Queer: A Memoir,? which tells the story of the author?s coming of age as nonbinary, and includes sex act illustrations.

Dixon has previously criticized the removal ?All Balls Aren?t Blue: A Memoir-Manifesto,? a young-adult book by a queer and Black author reportedly removed from schools in eight states because it contains descriptions of sexual acts.

In Florida, GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis's administration has re-enacted several textbooks as part of his push for student "indoctrination."

All told, local and state officials across the country have re-enacted 1,648 individual book titles between July 2021 and June 2022, including 41 percent with LGBTQ themes or characters, according to a tally from Pen America, a nonprofit that promotes freedom of expression.

?This movement to whack off books is deeply undemocratic, in that it often seeks to impose restrictions on students and families access to sex acts on the preferences of those calling for the books,? Pen America said in a recent report.

According to court records, one portion of the prosecution's email to victims that has raised red flags is an assertion that the Crumbleys have offered no proof that they were good parents, as they argued in a court filing that detailed their years of parenting.

"The prosecution team wants you to know that we have not seen any actual evidence to support (the parents') claims and the defense has not provided any evidence to the court," the prosecutor's office wrote to the victims in a statement published on Facebook.

"It implies that the defense is lying, or making up information," lawyers for the Crumbleys have argued, stressing they're tired of the prosecution acting as if it is the only "truth-teller" in this case.

The judge, meanwhile, has cautioned the prosecutor's office to be more careful.

Having said all the above, I'm still not sold on the idea that the parents' convictions for involuntary manslaughter.

The judges should have allowed a "change of venue" request. I don't think a fair trial was possible within Oakland County, and that should have been obvious at the point of the parents' trials. The prosecutor was engaged in bullshit antics trying to score points in the nedia, to the point where a gag order was required. The prosecutor has already indicated that there won't be any attempt to prosecute school officials. Maybe the verdict would've been the same, but I don't trust the legal officials involved.

The legal duty of care for children in public schools is shared between the parents and the school.

Somewhere between "The thoughts won't stop. Help me." and "My life is useless. The world is dead.", the school counselor who looked at Crumbley's artwork should have concluded that he was a danger to himself and|or others. They should not have just let him back into the general population, because that drawing is a pretty clear-cut cry for help. The explanation I read was that he hadn't acted out in class, which discounts the possibility that he might have been suicidal. The parents didn't take him home like they wanted so... just return to normal and hope that the kid got their shit together between second period and lunchtime?

The parents are shit, but I'm not feeling it for Oxford Schools. It's not a perfect analogy, but this is KINDA like the bartender serving someone who drunk drives their way to a homicide. You don't just prosecute the bartender for negligent homicide, but the bar owner for not handling shit right at the venue where the crime was concocted. The owner's the one with the big liquor license, while the bartender doesn't usually need or have "serious" licensing, and might be a total dumbass.
