Lots of Michigan/MSU quotes (in blue):

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:03 PM ET ) Alright, thanks for joining us again. Only eight days to go until the start of the season. I'm sure everybody is getting pretty fired up. Here we go....

Ivan (Thomasville, OK): Which RB is better equipped to handle the NFL next year? McFadden or Slaton?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:04 PM ET ) I think McFadden is bigger and more physical, which might make him better equipped for the NFL. But Slaton is pretty strong, too, and there's no doubting his speed.

Brett ( State College, PA): Do you think Penn State has a legitimate shot at winning the big 10 this season? They play OSU, Wisco, and ND at Happey Valley this season leaving the only big road test to be played at Michigan. They have a highly talent offense and a proven defense. I think we win it this season!

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:06 PM ET ) I think the Nittany Lions will be in the hunt until the very end, along with Wisconsin and Michigan. I think Ohio State takes a small step back this year, having to replace so many players on offense. I think a lot still depends on how Morelli plays. Can Scott replace Tony Hunt?

Jeff ('Cuse): Please tell me there is light at the end of the horrible tunnel for the Orange, maybe not this year but soon!!

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:07 PM ET ) I thought they had a chance to be better this year, until Delone Carter was hurt. They've lost so much ground to W. Va., Rutgers, Louisville and even South Florida in the Big East that it's going to be tough to make it up very fast. But they have to get better at some point, right?

ian (ny, ny): mark...read the article about teams being overrated when the preseson polls come out....who do you think is the most overrated team from this preseason poll?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:09 PM ET ) I think there are a couple of teams that might be overrated just because they lost so much talent from last year -- Florida, Ohio State. Don't know about Georgia's offensive line. Don't know about Tennessee. Will West Virginia be that much better on defense? Will UCLA find consistency under Karl Dorrell? We'll find out.

Matt (Little Rock, AR): Don't get me wrong, I'm as big a McFadden fan as any, but all we hear about is him. What are your thoughts on Hillis and Jones at the next level..maybe draft projection?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:11 PM ET ) I think Jones could start for 95 percent of the teams in the country. Has unbelievable speed and vision. Hill is a bruising blocker who can run and catch, so there's probably a spot for him in the NFL, too. He's comparable to Schmitt at West Virginia and Cox at Georgia Tech (no coincidence those teams have great tailbacks behind those fullback).

Joe ( South Bend ind): What will Notre dame be ranked at the end of the season?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:13 PM ET ) I think it's going to be a tough year for the Irish. Just my opinion, and I've been accused of bashing the Irish in the past (even though I was born and raised near South Bend). I just think there's too much talent to replace on offense. Breaking in a new quarterback with young receivers is never a good mix. They'll rely on the running game a lot, I'm guessing. I've heard good reports on the defense under Corwin Brown, but are they big enough and strong enough up front, even in the 3-4? The defensive backs are experienced, but are they fast enough? It's another tough schedule. I think 7 or 8 wins would be a great, great season for the Irish.

Drew, MN: You are one of the few analysts that believe that Minnesota will not finish last in the Big Ten. What positives to you see at Minnesota that others don't?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:16 PM ET ) QB is a concern, but I think Pinnix is a good tailback. Nine starters back from a decent defense. I think there are several teams in the Big 10 that might struggle -- Illinois (still a year away), Michigan State (rebuilding), Northwestern (they'll be better) -- so there's some margin for error in the Big 10. They should win their four non-conference games, and Purdue and Illinois at home are winnable games. Have to beat Indiana, Northwestern or Iowa on the road to make a bowl, in my opinion.

Scott S. (ny, ny): Why dont you grow a pair and pick the Badgers to win the B10. You know you want to...

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:16 PM ET ) Came close to doing it. Love P.J. Hill. Quarterback should be OK. But Michigan has so much firepower on offense. We'll see how long it takes for the defense to rebuild. Badgers certainly have a chance to win it.

Josh (Tallahassee): Lets assume that neither X or Drew are the answer at QB for FSU. With EJ Manuel Coming in, do you think that Jimbo's hand picked QB will start from the start? And what does our future look like over the next few years?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:18 PM ET ) I think Weatherford is going to be OK at quarterback this year. He had good numbers in the last scrimmage (16-for-20?). The line has to gel quickly to give him some time. I don't see Bobby Bowden picking a true freshman over a senior in '08. But we'll see what happens with Weatherford or Lee this season. I think they really like the coaching staff down there, and they've still got talented players. I think they'll be much better this year (I thought the same thing last season, though).

Jon (Grand Rapids, MI): Do all ESPN â??expertsâ?ý pick multiple projected matchups in the BCS Championship game, or is it just you? So which is it? Michigan versus USC or USC versus Oklahoma? You seemed to pick each. I suppose if you pick 20 different matchups at years end you can have a better chance of patting yourself on the back claiming you predicted the matchup in August.

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:19 PM ET ) I'm going with the last one -- USC vs. LSU. I picked one on Jan. 9 -- far too early. Then might have mentioned one in a chat this summer. But I'm going with Trojans vs. Tigers and sticking with it.

andy (lincoln): with keller tabbed as qb what are nebraska's chances against usc? and the big 12?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:21 PM ET ) I've got a story coming on Keller on Friday as part of the Big 12 preview. He's confident with the West Coast offense. Nebraska definitely has quality receivers to work with. If Lucky can stay healthy, the running game should be OK. I think Nebraska is the favorite in the Big 12 North, ahead of Missouri. Are they ready for USC? I hope I'm in Lincoln to find out.

Wes (Lorton, Va): What are the chances for playoff college game in the near future

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:22 PM ET ) As long as Tom Hansen is running the Pac-10, I don't think it's happening any time soon.

Stephen (Red Bluff, CAL): Hey Mark--What's up with your inclusion of Boise State on your list of over/unbderrated teams? You list one of the criteria for TEAM eligibility was at least three preseason poll appearences between 1997-2006, but then you clearly stated the Broncos had only been on one. Did I miss something?!

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:22 PM ET ) Preseason or final poll -- Boise State met the criteria. It was clarified.

Boose (Louisville, KY): What will be the biggest upset in the first few weeks? USF over Auburn? UK over U of L?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:24 PM ET ) Both of those are possibilities, if the Wildcats drastically improve on defense. There will be a couple of early upsets. I can't wait to see Georgia-Oklahoma State and Cal-Tennessee in the first week. Conference bragging rights at stake. Georgia Tech over Notre Dame? Is that an upset? Wyoming over Virginia? Virginia Tech over LSU? Oregon over Michigan? Now that would be big, but probably won't happen.

Rob (Baltimore): How can the SEC be superior to the Big 10 if the Big 10 has a better record head to head? It doesn't make any sense.

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:26 PM ET ) I think it's all relative and depends which conference you root for. They're probably pretty even, when it's all said and done. Ohio State loses to Florida badly. Wisconsin beats Arkansas. Penn State beats Tennessee. I think the bowl record if fairly even through the last 10 years.

Rodney (nyc): If you watched any Georgia game last year, you'd know that losing those 3 seniors from the OL is actually a plus. What about Matthew Stafford and Sean Bailey? Will the vertical passing game open things up for the run?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:27 PM ET ) Losing Daniel Inman will save UGA about 30 yards per game in personal fouls. That offensive line is a huge concern. I just don't know if you can go into the SEC with two freshman starting on the line, but Georgia isn't the only team trying to do it this year. Don't know about Bailey, but I think Moore and Wilson could really help the down-field passing game this year. Stafford certainly has the arm strength to do it. I still think they rely heavily on those three running backs, though. Georgia will be in the SEC East mix. Second week is huge for UGA and SC.

Mike (Morgantown, WV): It's nearing the end of the football season. West Virginia is undefeated, but gets left out ouf the BCS National Championship Game. Where do you see them going if this scenario plays out? I'd love an Orange Bowl against the Hokies.

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:28 PM ET ) It depends on which teams are undefeated, too. If they were left out of the BCS game, they'd go to the Orange Bowl and might play Virginia Tech, the ACC champions (predicted), if neither team is in the BCS. Wouldn't that be fun?

Justin (Denver): How about CU? With the coaches son slated to start at QB, when can we expect them to begin challenging for the Big 12 North title again?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:29 PM ET ) I don't think Dan Hawkins thought last year would be so difficult, but he had a pretty good idea what he was facing in preseason camp. Cody Hawkins should have a better handle on the offense, and Bernard Jackson should be a versatile playmaker. There's room to improve quickly in the Big 12 North, so I'd be surprised if it doesn't happen in the next couple of years.

Joan, Brentwood, CA: Just how much do I need to worry about my sturdy Golden Bears matchups with Tennessee, Oregon and UCLA? It seems like they're going to do pretty well.

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:31 PM ET ) I was at the Cal-Tennessee game last year and the Bears were no match for the Vols' speed or physical play. I think Cal has a much better chance in Berkeley, though, especially with Robert Meachem going to the NFL. He really changed that game last year. Tennessee might start a true freshman at cornerback (Eric Berry), like Cal did last year. Can DeSean Jackson change the game?

G (Chicago): Can you explain to me why Duke can have a top bball program but are the laughingstock of college football? Why can't they get anything going?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:32 PM ET ) It's easier to get 10 basketball players to Duke, instead of 85 football players. They've allowed Ted Roof to start redshirting the bulk of his freshman classes, so I think you'll start to see some improvements. Hopefully, Roof will be there to reap the rewards. He's a good football coach who inherited an awful situation.

Sam, Salt Lake City: I just read that Utah will open the 2008 season against Michigan for $800,000. It seems Utah has nothing to lose in this situation, and a lose-lose situation for Michigan. Do you agree?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:33 PM ET ) As long as there's not a return game to Salt Lake City, I'd think Michigan came out pretty good. I think $1 million is the going rate for a pay-check game against a quality opponent.

Mike (Dallas): Many people have openly admitted (ie Bruce Feldman) that WVU is ranked so high because they expect them to run through the Big East without any problems. Shouldn't a ranking be based off of who is good, not who we expect to do well? By Feldman's logic, WVU would not be ranked if they played in the SEC, even though it's the same team. This doesn't add up and ultimately hurts teams in quality conferences. Care to enlighten us?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:34 PM ET ) I'd be surprised if Bruce said that. I don't think West Virginia will run through the Big East. They've got to beat Louisville, which beat them last year, and Rutgers, which took them into overtime (without Pat White). South Florida won't be a gimme, either. The Big East is tougher than people think. And I don't necessarily think W. Va. would get clobbered in the SEC. I saw them beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl two years ago, and Slaton and White are much better players now.

Seth (NY): Who do you think will be the starting QB for Maryland?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:35 PM ET ) Everything I've been told is that Steffy will start, and the kid from California (Turner?) is pushing Josh Portis for the backup job.

Gregg (Sacramento, CA): What's the difference between a "home-and-home" series and a "home-and-away"? It seems to me that each indicate one game at home, the second one at the opponent? Is this just two ways to say the same thing?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:36 PM ET ) If I understand the question correctly, they're the same thing.

sean, michigan: love my blue- but afraid they will choke once this year....which game is the most concerning outside of wisconsin??

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:37 PM ET ) It has to be Ohio State, no? Oregon, Notre Dame and Penn State three consecutive weeks in the Big House might be tough, too.

Charles (Little Rock, AR): Mark - for the sake of "food for thought," please humor me with your thoughts on this idea: Given our QB woes and Monk being down with a knee injury, How about the Hogs go with a Quadruple-Option? McFadden at QB, with Jones, Smith and Hillis all on the field together? Crazy and unlikely yes, but fun to think about, right?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:37 PM ET ) Yes, because I believe McFadden could do a lot of things at quarterback.

ya boy, athens, ga: who's the bigger dope, you or mike vick

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:38 PM ET ) Despite my popularity in certain parts of the country, I'd still have to go with Vick.

Brian (L.A., CA): With Bradford being named Oklahoma's starting QB(red shirt), does it take the Sooner's a step back in the learning curve vis a vis Colt McCoy?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:39 PM ET ) I thought McCoy was pretty good last year. You've still got the running backs and receivers and defense. Oklahoma will be fine, as long as Bradford manages the games well and doesn't make too many mistakes.

Patrick (Boston): Charlie Weis bristled at the term rebuilding when describing his team. Is it spin, or can the Irish contend on the BCS level?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:39 PM ET ) I think they're definitely rebuilding. You don't lose Quinn, Samardzija, McKnight, Abiamiri, etc., and stay at the same level.

Frank Ann Arbor, MI: How much better is Brian Brohm than Chade Henne and Andre Woodson? Who would you take first in next years NFL draft?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:40 PM ET ) Woodson had the best numbers last year. His TD-to-INT ratio was sick. Brohm is still probably the No. 1 guy in NFL scout's eyes, but Woodson really reminds me of JaMarcus Russell (late bloomer, too). Henne is no slouch. He'll start for NFL team.

Nancy, Wyandotte MI: Does Colorado State hold any concern for Cal?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:41 PM ET ) I'd be surprised to see Sonny Lubbick's team stay down for long. Getting Kyle Bell back will help. Cal might have some issues on defense. We'll see how they play against Tennessee.

Jay (Austin, TX): Can a QB from Hawaii really win the Heisman? I seriously doubt it no matter what kind of stats Brennan puts up.

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:42 PM ET ) I think the schedule is really going to hamper Brennan's chances of winning the Heisman. No matter the numbers he puts up, competition is going to be a concern for a lot of voters. But the kid is a great, great quarterback. I don't think you can label him as a "system" quarterback. He has great skills.

Alex in Richmond: What are VT's chances at LSU? Does a win vault them to #1 or 2?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:43 PM ET ) I'll see the Hokies in their opener against East Carolina. A win there and at LSU would certainly vault them into the top five. Will be curious to see if Sean Glennon has improved. We know the defense will be solid under Bud Foster, and Ore is a great tailback. I think they're a little concerned about the offensive line.

Tim (Kings Bay, GA): If it were up to you, would the Heisman be based on pure talent or would it be based on the current system...politics, popularity of team, etc?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:44 PM ET ) I think the right guy wins it most of the time. But you certainly have to play on one of the best teams to win it. I don't think it's as much of a popularity contest as it was in the past.

scott (simpsonville sc): South Carolina's chances of competeing in the SEC East? There is alot of talk around that they could have a really good year, or a really bad year. What do you forsee? Any games they could "steal" with that tough schedule?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:45 PM ET ) Spurrier likes his team. Better offensive line. Bigger and stronger on the defensive line. A lot depends on Blake Mitchell's play. Can he keep Spurrier happy and will he mature into the leader of the team and stay out of trouble. The schedule is brutal. Winning at Georgia would certainly help S.C.'s chances in the East.

Kevin (Los Angeles): I know UF is ranked #3 but it seems like they are getting a lot of disrespect (you called them the most overrated team already in this chat). They may have lost 9 starters on Defense and Chris Leak but all of their replacements have more talent, they just lack the experience. Their offense should average 40+ PPG (they averaged 29 last year with the wrong personel)so their D just needs to hold them to under 35. With their coaches, this seems like cake. Tell me I'm wrong.

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:46 PM ET ) I didn't say they were the most overrated team. I said they might be one of the more overrated teams because they're having to replace nine starters on defense. I was at their first practice. There are serious holes to fill. Young cornerbacks. New tackles. New middle linebacker. That defense essentially won them a national championship last year. They'll need a high-powered offense and they've probably got one with Fayson, Harvin, Caldwell, etc.

Curt (Ann Arbor): With freshman Ryan Mallett in Ann Arbor waiting in the wings underneath Chad Henne, does Michigan finally have a viable backup if, god forbid, something happens to Henne?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:47 PM ET ) Henne raved about the kid when I talked to him in Chicago. Don't be surprised if he gets some mop-up duty to get him ready for '08. You'll be much better if Henne stays healthy, though.

nathan (columbus Ohio): what does ohio state have to do in order to upset either Um or Wis?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:48 PM ET ) Find a quarterback. Have receivers step up to replace ginn and gonzalez. Hand the ball to Wells. They're not going to fall off the map, by any means. But they've got to replace a lot of production. They'll still be a very good team.

Patrick (Waco): What do you think of Baylor's chances against TCU in week one? Isn't TCU a little overrated because it always walks through its conference schedule

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:49 PM ET ) I think TCU is going to be very, very good. It's going to be very difficult to score on the Horned Frog defense. I thought Baylor was making strides last year, then the QB got hurt. Guy Morriss is a good coach, but it's a tough situation in the Big 12 South.

Aaron (norman): Does the winner of the ou texas game have the inside track to the national championship game?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:50 PM ET ) The winner might, but it also depends on what happens in the SEC and if USC finishes undefeated. What if W. Va. or Louisville goes unbeaten? Too many unknowns at this point.

JEff (PA): who will be starting at QB for Notre Dame?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:51 PM ET ) I'd be surprised if it's not some combination of Sharpley and Jones, but I'm hearing absolutely nothing on QBs out of South Bend.

Aaron (Boston): What is your opinion of Jim Harbaugh's time on the farm so far as we head into the season? Is he the guy who can get this team competitive in the next year or two, and winning in the next 4 or 5?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:51 PM ET ) I hope the Cardinal can back up his comments. At least we know Stanford will go down fighting if they don't improve quickly.

Chris (Mechanicsville,MD): Does Louisville have the talent to win the Big East

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:53 PM ET ) Sure, with Brohm, Urrutia, Douglas and Allen returning, the offense will be high-octane. They have to replace some key guys on defense, but I'd put Louisville as the co-favorite in the Big East, along with West Virginia.

Mike, Grand Rapids MI: You forgot the MSU ALWAYS has a shot at beating the wolverines. The game is in East Lansing, and Dantonio has put a fire in the belly of the Spartans...don't underestimate the Spartan Nation

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:53 PM ET ) That would be a heck of a win for Dantonio in his first year.

Travis (Wisconsin): Am I the only one that see's comparisons between Paris Hilton and Jimmy Claussen? They both basically have an entire network devoted to constant coverage of them, both of them have done nothing but get talked about non stop, I'd like to see both go away. Your thoughts?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:55 PM ET ) yeah, but I don't think Clausen is designing his own fashion line. not yet, anyway.

Mike (Happy Valley,PA): Why does everyone underestimate the Nittany Lions? They WILL finally upset UM on the road and they have ND, OSU, UW, Iowa and Purdue all at home! This is a team that will fly under the radar and put itself in the NC mix by years end....your thoughts?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:56 PM ET ) The news on Scirrotto today certainly helps the cause. A lot depends on Morrelli's consistency, running game and defensive line....

Phil (New York): What happens if Michigan, USC, Texas, and LSU go undefeated?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:57 PM ET ) I really don't want to think about it. Michigan, USC and LSU would have tougher schedules than Texas. After that, it would be a crap shoot.

Mike (NC): Hi Mark, can Wake Forest duplicate last seasons success?

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (2:59 PM ET ) I've got a story coming out Thursday on the Demon Deacons. I think it will be difficult to match last year's success, but they won't slip too much in the ACC.

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/sn2.gif Mark Schlabach: (3:00 PM ET ) Folks, I've got to run and pick my daughter up from school. Thanks for joining us. More than 800 questions today. I'm sure I'll be back again next week, chatting from lovely Blacksburg, Va. Have a great week.

That question about UM, USC, Texas, and LSU going undefeated is a great one.
Suppose anyone (UM, Wiscy, OSU) go undefeated against those other three. Does the Big 10 get stiffed in the championship game because of the showing of OSU and UM in last year's BCS series?
If LSU goes undefeated, pencil them in (probably won't happen, though). So there would be three teams fighting for one spot. Very interesting. I'd like to see the BCS get blown up, finally, by this scenario, or one like it.

An article from him:

Michigan seniors ready to erase some dubious zeros

CHICAGO -- If left tackle Jake Long had left Michigan after the 2006 season, he probably would have collected an NFL signing bonus that ended in quite a few zeros.
But Long, the Wolverines' soft-spoken All-American, was more concerned about two other zeros.
Zero wins against Ohio State. Zero bowl victories.
The Wolverines have finished each of the last three seasons with consecutive losses, and ending that dubious streak is why Long returned to Michigan for the 2007 season, rather than entering the NFL draft.
"That's one of the reasons I came back," Long said. "We haven't finished a season strong as a group. We haven't beaten Ohio State. We haven't won a bowl game. We want to come out on top as seniors."
Thanks to Long's surprising decision, the Wolverines enter this season as favorites to win the Big Ten championship, something that has elluded them since Long's redshirt freshman season in 2004.
When Long, a 6-foot-7, 313-pound native of Lapeer, Mich., decided to return to school for his senior season, tailback Mike Hart (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=160897) and quarterback Chad Henne (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=160898) soon followed. That trio, along with receivers Mario Manningham (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=180763) and Adrian Arrington (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=160889), gives Michigan what could potentially be one of the most explosive offenses in college football.
And it was Long who started Michigan's domino effect.
"When you give up $12 or $15 million, you have to be a Michigan man," Hart said. "You have to love the school."
Or you must really want to beat Ohio State, which knocked the Wolverines out of the BCS National Championship Game with a 42-39 win in what was one of the most anticipated games in recent history.
After Michigan closed the 2006 season with a disappointing 32-18 loss to Southern California in the Rose Bowl, Long, Hart and Henne went their separate ways. Hart wasn't sure whether Long would return to school, but the running back said he wasn't coming back if his lead blocker didn't return. Henne had already told coach Lloyd Carr that he would come back, but the quarterback said his decision might have changed if Hart and Long had left.

"They never had to persuade me," Long said. "We kind of just stayed away from each other and let each other make their own decision. The biggest thing Mike said was he was coming back if I came back."
Certainly, Long faced the most difficult decision and had the most to gain financially. He started all 13 games at left tackle last season and was named Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year. He has exceptionally quick feet, long arms and is considered a prototypical NFL tackle.
If Long had left Michigan and entered the NFL draft, he might have been the second offensive lineman selected, behind Wisconsin tackle Joe Thomas, the third choice in the draft by the Cleveland Browns. Instead, Penn State tackle Levi Brown was picked fifth by the Arizona Cardinals.
"There would have been no Levi Brown at No. 5," Hart said. "Levi Brown owes Jake some of that signing bonus. Jake's better than Joe Thomas, too, but Thomas got all the hype."
Long, 22, said he watched the NFL draft alone in his apartment in Ann Arbor, Mich. After Thomas and Brown, his two former Big Ten rivals, were selected so high, Long said he didn't think about what he might have passed up.
"Levi Brown was a great player and deserves everything he got," Long said. "I was happy for him. I'm working so next year that's me."
While Long enters his senior season as a potential top 10 selection in the 2008 NFL draft, Hart and Henne still have questions to answer about their abilities. Hart finished fifth in voting for the Heisman Trophy voting last year, after running for 1,562 yards and 14 touchdowns. Hart enters this season needing 794 yards to surpass Anthony Thomas' school record of 4,472 career rushing yards.
Just as impressively, Hart has proved to be one of the most reliable runners in college football history. He has fumbled only three times in 750 carries during his career and hasn't lost the football in a game since 2004.
But because of Hart's small stature (the Syracuse, N.Y., native is only 5-foot-9 and 196 pounds), he still faces concerns about whether he's big enough to be an every-down runner in the NFL.
Henne has no doubt his tailback can excel in the pros.
"You compare him to Barry Sanders," Henne said. "He can move laterally and see the holes and make the cuts. He's such a competitor that nobody really gets in his way."
Hart's escapability and toughness are what separate him from running backs like Arkansas' Darren McFadden (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=170928) and West Virginia's Steve Slaton (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=174468), Henne said.

"Those guys have the true speed," Henne said. "Mike is more hit the hole, find the hole and make people miss. Once they get him in the NFL combine and see how strong he is, there's no doubt they'll draft him high."
Going into last season, inconsistency was the only thing preventing Henne from becoming an elite quarterback. He became Michigan's quarterback the day he stepped on campus in 2004 and has started all 37 games the last three seasons combined. Barring an injury this season, Henne will break Michigan records for career attempts, completions, passing yards and touchdown passes.
But until Henne played well in last season's victories over Notre Dame, Penn State and Iowa, and even in the loss to Ohio State, he had been dogged by his performances in the Wolverines' biggest games.
"He's so confident now and knows what the defense is going to do," Long said. "He doesn't let anything get in his head or anything get in his way."
And if Michigan can survive the first 2½ months of the season, which include home games against Oregon, Notre Dame and Penn State, the Buckeyes again will be the only thing standing in the Wolverines' way. "I'm excited," Long said. "This team looks hungry. This team looks excited. I feel like something would be missing [if we left without beating Ohio State and winning a bowl game]. We've done a lot of great things in our careers, but we haven't beaten Ohio State and haven't won a bowl game."
